Lowering an RX

Featured Replies

Just a question about lowering a RX. Ive read in other posts about the interchangability of different suspension components throughout the subaru models but am still not completely sure. Would springs from a Legacy 89-96 fit in an RX front and rear? This is just the springs. Or could the whole strut/spring unit fit into the original RX brake/caliper etc unit?

Cheers for your help

Karl

as far as lowering it with stock parts..the best way as far as the front goes, is to use 2wd 4cyl xt front struts as they are much lower than stock. they are also available brand new from KYB.

the pic above is also with smaller diameter tires (205 60 13) .

as for the rear, i have yet to try, but i have heard that using the rear springs from off said 2wd xt will level it out some. i belive some people have also cut a coil or 2 off.

hope this helps

I used the front struts from a 2WD XT. I lucked out and found one in the junkyard that had KYB GR2's in it :)

Its too low however, and Ive had to change rims to 13" alloys to keep the tires from rubbing.

2WD XT rear struts are actually TALLER than the factory RX ones. I heard a rumor that 2WD sedan struts are the lowest... but can anyone confirm this? I'd have to see it to believe it.

I'm running 185/60/14 tires on Pugs and the only rubbing I've had is when hitting a bump while going around a sharp 90 degree turn (into a driveway, etc). It hasn't done any visible damage to the tires or the fenders, so I've left it alone for now.

Adjustibility is fun :D

Just an added note. The Before pic is with 14 inch pugs with a diameter of ~25 inches. The after picture is with 16 inch Konigs with a diameter of ~25 inches

Ditto. What are we looking at here Calebz??

I've got a wagon that I'd love to lower a few inches except for the need to jack it back up during the winter (when I'd actually like to add an inch or 2 the other way!).

Those are eBay cheapo adjustable coilovers for a 2002-2004 WRX. In the pic of the car, they are almost all the way down. In the current configuration, they are 350# rear and 450# front. If I want to go camping or I need to load the car up with 900+ pounds of stuff (wouldn't be the first time) I can adjust them about 3 inches up from where they are now..

Warning: they will make for a much stiffer ride than you are used to, and the stock struts/shocks don't keep up with the spring rate as much as I would like.

2WD rears are taller than 4WD. 4WD rears from any sedan/wagon/coupe are shortest.

XT's ofcourse are the tallest of all of them.

So you're saying... I already have the lowest rear struts available?

So you're saying... I already have the lowest rear struts available?

Yep. I took all of them and compared. XT is tallest. 2WD is next. Then 4WD.

yeah...in order of shortest to longest SPRINGS...

Xt 2wd, 3 door, sedan, wagon...wagon 4wd.

weakest is XT2wd. Strongest is Wagon 4wd.

  • 1 month later...

so to acheve the lowest ride possible with stock parts would be front 2wd XT struts, rear stock wagon 4wd struts with XT coils? So what is your flashy coilover setup there?? What exaxtly would I need to accomplish something of that nature?

From what i hear the coilover setup sucks and isnt worth the adjustablility (i believe it was Caleb who told me :P )

The 2WD XT will net you most of the parts you need.

Nope.. That was probably Russ, after he broke his offroad.. Mine is pavement only and I'm quite fond of it. When I moved a couple weeks ago, my wagon saw double duty as a truck. Stiff springs, adjusted all the way up = pretty damn good hauling capacity. Now that I have dealt with the offset/ tire rubbing problems, I personally think my setup kicks rump roast:D

Ah... well, it wasnt russ. Cant remember who. Maybe you said something else and I thought they would suck. I dunno.

Im about to do a 5 lug swap, so I will have some 2WD XT front struts available soon. They are even KYB GR2's :)

dont want to steal the thread but awhile ago i read about a person or someone knew a person who had complete suspension customo made. do you know if any decent companies do this? i.e. koni, kyb, tokico or the like? i kinda feeel like swapping to 5 lug and then working offa that and seeing if ill jus save save save (too broke right now) and get a whoole custom set up. inputs pleease.
