September 23, 200520 yr Ive had problems keeping the AC on my 91 legacy wagon going for many years It hasnt worked right as long as ive had the car recently I got it hooked back up and freshly charged It worked for an hour or so and then I heard the familiar sounds of what sound like relays clicking on and off inside the dash. Has anyone had a similar experience? Ive had a couple different shops look at it and its always turned out the same with no real answers. Any ideas?
September 23, 200520 yr have you had it pressure tested, seems like you are loosing R-12 at a very rapid rate, which is causing your low pressure sensor to shut off the relay, which gives you your clicking.
September 24, 200520 yr You need a leak test. Its simple to do, and usually the #1 cause is a bad o ring. Unfortunitly it sounds like a very fast leak so you will need a Sniffer to do it as opposed to a slow leak with soap bubbles (poor mans sniffer). Joe
September 24, 200520 yr I have had the expansion valve leak on 1990 legacy, it would leak out overnight. it is located inside the dash. and also there is a small threaded plug on the bottom of the compressor (calsonic compressor)that was barely leaking. Use soappy water and also look for oily spots around the lines and check the compressor clutch to see if it is wet(oily).
September 24, 200520 yr Author they have tested it and say it doesnt leak not sure which method they used but nobodys been able to cure it this time they said it was coroded connections its weird sometimes since this last charge it blows nice and cold then fades out. then the next day its back I havent noticed anything around the pump May tear into the dash this weekend to cure some bad connections in the stereo. wonder what all the cliking going on under the dash is? the expansion valve? hmmm thanks for the good clues now that winters here i better get it fixed have been without it so long it was a real luxury ride to have it even for a short while

In that is a thermqal relay that keeps the A/C from freezing up by getting too cold. that is going out. that is what is causing the fast relay click. I had mne go out just after I converted to R134a. PM me if you want me so send you one to try out. Or you could go to the stealership to get them to sell you one. . .
September 28, 200520 yr Author thanks gnu! the clicking has stopped for now now that its cooling off Il probably let it slide till spring but now I know where to look!! behind the glove box is where the condenser lives.
