October 30, 200520 yr I know this has been done. Mudrat fitted a ea82 transmission behind a EJ motor in a forester. (Forester_Ranger's I think) I have a 90 Legacy that I want a ea tranny in. I need the adapter plate, that’s a given. But I have questions about the rear diff and driveline. How do I convert the rear diff to 3.9 gear ratio on the Legacy? Do I just need to swap out the ring? Or will a ea rear diff bolt up to the Legacy? Also, I know the transmissions are different lengths. Which drive line would I use? Do you have any input Forester_Ranger? Thanks,
October 30, 200520 yr The rear diff should bolt right in, i'd just change the whole diff, although on the Legacy there is much more support for the diff than on the EA-82's You may have to make a custom drive line, and shorten or lengthen the section in front of the carrier bearing
October 30, 200520 yr the diff casing and the stubs are the same on 90-94 legacys, and the EA cars... so they are a direct bolt in.... I am wondering this on my impreza- the driveline and CVs... will an EA82 driveshaft bolt into my impreza? anyone with an EA82 want to measure the 3 points, and I can measure the points on my impreza so we can collaborate a data thread so we can figure this out?
October 30, 200520 yr Author Oh yeah. I dunno about transmission mounts and how they will line up. Also we would have to use GL-10 turbo axels right? Are they long enough to use in a legacy?
October 30, 200520 yr They call these cars lego's for a reason... keep the EJ axles, only way it will and has worked w/o fabbong axles. note, the rear axles are side specific on early legacy, don't know about newer ones. Right is 5/16" shorter, messed this up last week on a rear lsd swap, made a nasty howl, but only above 70mph. don't know if the rear 3.90 ring gear will bolt up to the slip fit style rear diff of the new gen EJ's.
October 30, 200520 yr You'll have to use a tranny from a turbo model with 25 spline stubs so it will match up with the legacy axles. Use the EJ driveshaft...it will probably have to be shortened or lengthened a bit, but I've been told it's stronger than the EA shafts and less prone to joint failure. Also, the mounting for the carrier bearing is slightly different between the two cars...it will bolt up, but it's not perfect.

October 31, 200520 yr you can use the axles from a fwd ej18 impreza as the length is right and they have 23 splines for n/a ea82 trannies you can also swap on the doj cup from a turbo automatic ea82 axle onto the ej as its the same diameter of the 25 spline axles but its still 23 splines(turbo 3spds only)

How much for the axles? When I put the EJ tranny in my EA car, i had to weld the EJ tranny mounts to the EA crossmembers. I would imagine you'd have to do the same for this conversion, but you may be able to just drill some new mounting holes. Either way, be prepared for some fab work.

The carrier bearing bolted up with a little fanagling, and the front section had to be shortened an inch (in retrospect, probably about 7/8" would be better). I don't know how the Legacy compares to the Impreza, but I do know it's not a big deal to run the Legacy shaft on the EA82 and I'm assuming it would work the other way around. Something to consider: A guy that has forgotten more about Subarus than I will ever know told me that the EJ shaft is stronger, and since it uses a DOJ for the center joint instead of a U-joint, it is less problematic.
