Where's my 'puter?

Featured Replies

OK I know it's really a ecs, or ecu, or ecm, but mine is hiding!! '87 GL 10 wagon 4x4 127,000 and no computer. Least it's not where Haynes says it is, under the steering column. Oh there is a nice shiney bracket!! Looks like a good place for a 'puter. Any body know? I got rough idle and impatiant wife. Thanks

it should be right under the steering column.. I have had 2 87 GL-10 wagons and they were both there..

Your car wouldn't perchance be a carbed GL would it?.. maybe one without a computer?

wow - I didn't know they had non-feedback carbs in the EA82's. But yeah - if you have no 'puter in there, it means you don't have a feedback carb, and you don't need the 'puter. You'll have to track down your rough idle the old fashioned way. It's most likely your carb. The Hitachi's are rather infamous about working that way. You can get a rebuilt unit, but the cost is near to what a good weber would cost, so unless you live in a place where a weber just won't do, then there's not much sense in getting a rebuilt Hitachi. Also you could rebuild it yourself, but they are notoriously difficult to work with. Most shops won't even touch them.

Mine use to be on my steering column on those shiny brackets,

.............................till I took it off:brolleye:

I hope I can find it?...................... :cornfuzz:

Never mind,

82 Hatch, If I only had a brain....:temper:

01 Forester, Don't touch me!

wait now wait,

Khaloum says 87 GL10 ?

I have never seen an 87 GL10 with a carb.

This is one for the books if it is a GL10

Now that said (please note GD) all 87 carbed 4x4s had non feedback carbs as far as I know (CA models may differ)

There is no ECU and no 02 sensor. They pass emissions with smoke and mirrors I guess.

So Khal if you find no 02 then there is no ECU

Your idle problem many be a bad carb setting or possibly one of the smoke and mirrors mentioned or a vacuum line cracked and broken

Please show us a picture of this "carbed" GL10

Cool Skip - I don't look at many EA82's - but most of the ones I see are SPFI or feedback carb. Could be that a lot came from Cali a few years ago. Heck - my 84 was a feedback too. My Brat isn't (thank god), and it passes emmisions around here same as the feedback version did. I should dig up my test report from when I first got the 84 wagon, and compare it to the Brat's report to see if there are any noticeable differences.

Skip is right on looking for the O2 - that is a much better way to tell - thanks Skip. But if he's not seeing the ECU and it WAS an SPFI or MPFI..... I would guess it wouldn't run at all right? So it virtually *must* be a regular carb I would think.... I want pics too.

GD

They did in at least the Cali market - mandated by law I think. That of course is assuming that carbed stuff was even sold there... pretty sure at least in 85 they were.

must have O2 sensor... ect

Not a Cali car. Set up for high altitude right here in colorado. No digital for pics but I can take some and scan them in in a week or so. How do I distinguish a feedback carb? Mine looks like the drawing in the Haynes. Definatly an '87 and an ea82. Funny thing is I put on a different carb from the junkyard and had the same lopey idle. I changed the High Altitude Compensator and the lope lessened but wont idle below 1000 rpm's. Timing checked ,went over every hose by hand, sprayed carb cleaner on all hoses and fittings, no leaks found, adjusted carb every direction that I know,{ which aint much}. Nancy wants her Suby back!!But I guess if theres no 'puter than its one less thing to worry about. I need to read those past threads on webers.

Oh yea and I changed fuel pump and filter and checked plugs disty cap, rotor

it's not a GL10 then just a GL??

Had me goin ya did.

Best bet - email Kerry at Roobuilders contact through

CCR. he knows these carbs better than any one I know.

May be a unrelated to the carb emission devise

(Leaking egr valve or thermoswitch?)

I believe he is in Denver so he knows altit comp also.

thanks Skip. I'll give him a e-mail.

Uh, do you have a couple of big black connectors, with a bunch of little "pin holes" in them under there where the computer is suppose to be, but not hooked to anything? The feed back systems will run without the computer, just not as well as they should. Has the car always had this problem since you owned it? or jes something that turned up recently?
