I just replaced both front half shafts, most everything went ok, but now I can't get the pins in near the transmission. From what I understand the shaft can only go on one way and when Installing them I checked and made sure I aligned the valley of the spindle on the shaft to the ridge on the other end, seems just a bit off, enough where I can get about half of a drift through. Any help would be greatly appreciated need some wheels for work tomorrow.

probably off 180. pop it off and try it the other way. they usually have a taper on the CV and splined shaft where they line up. hard to explain but it sounds like you are off.

If you look at the CV axle, the Trans. side. There will be a hole that has a taper to it. And the axle stub will have a hole that has a slight taper to it too, those two go together.

If you notice, I think, the taperd hole on the stub is drilled through one spline, going through the center of it, as the non tapered hole is drilled between two splines

I agree with RalleyRuss..... Sounds like you are off by 180 degrees.....

 

If everything is clean, you should be able to take a flashlight and look down through the roll pin holes. With the tapered side up, you should be able look right down the hole and see the top of the axle hole and the edge of the shaft hole. Sort of like this: (let me know if this doesn't look right...)

If you relax and look at the parts both ways.... it will only look "right" one way. To me it's just one of those things that.....once you do right.... you'll know each time how it's supposed to go.....

I agree. Turn it 180 degrees. Since it has an odd number of splines, the wrist pin can only go through if the splines are lined up right. If you have the pin out, you can stick a small screwdriver or drift through before you try to put the pin in to make sure it's lined up. Don't worry- you're almost there!

Ditto on the 180, as I have experienced this exact problem. Get a pin punch or a screwdriver that fits the size, make it go all the way through before attempting to install roll pin.

Actually I can say that mine were easy because they simply only line up one way, and if you get it wrong its cockeyed, (at least I am pretty sure it is), something about having an uneven number of splines or something like that.

Yup, I've put them on 180 degrees off, and the hole is only half lined up. Rotated it, and they lined up perfectly.
