95 super subbie Posted December 19, 2005 Share Posted December 19, 2005 i got this 91 loyale wagon auto for 50$ and only thing its good for is to demo it you cant have four drive so if i discoonect the rear drive shaft and take the rear out will it still move? do i have to leave it in front wheel drive or will it still go in four whell drive with the stuff taken out ? All_talk Posted December 19, 2005 Share Posted December 19, 2005 The automatic trans uses a clutch pack to transfer power to the rear (not a center diff), and will work fine without the rear drive. If its a 4EAT (did those even come in the Loyals ?) the TCU may throw a code. The 4WD switch just opens a soleinod that applies Vacuum to the 4WD servo (diaphragm) to apply pressure to the rear transfer clutch... just leave it in 2WD. That said, if the rules require removing the driveline to ensure that you don't use 4WD, I would recommend taking out one or both rear axles instead. NoahDL88 Posted December 19, 2005 Share Posted December 19, 2005 The rear driveshaft should be 2 piece. if it is, you can pull the center section of the drive shaft, behind the carrier bearing and in front of the rear diff, there will be a total of 8, 12mm bolts. be careful not to strip them, as after 14 years, it will happen easily. it should be clear very quickly if this is done right, if you see splines the wrong end was pulled. stephenw22 Posted December 19, 2005 Share Posted December 19, 2005 It's a 2-piece driveshaft, so you can take out just the back half of the driveshaft (the section with a u-joint at either end). Leave the front section in place, so the transmission fluid doesn't leak out. I had this done to my '85 wagon for about 2 years, after the rear axles went bad, and I couldn't find any replacement axles. Like it was said before, the subaru is normally a front-wheel drive vehicle. Pressing the 4wd button locks the rear wheels in. Not having the driveshaft in will make it front-only. subarubuddy Posted December 25, 2005 Share Posted December 25, 2005 but i think i leave it front wheel drive so i can use a backend of the car as much as i want so i can protect the frontend and the motor because any front wheel drive car can drag the backend all day long 91 super subbie station wagon 91 subaru legacy auto 2wd 95 subaru legacy 5spd awd you're right.. i've been to a lot of demo derbys and fwd cars ALWAYS do better because the steering and drive wheels are the same ones. so the rear end of the car can be totally destroyed and the front wheels will still drag the back of the car around and steer it somewhat even when the back wheels won't move anymore. also most of the derbys have a tech inspection before-hand...if the rules say 'no 4wd' they'll know if you have it before they even see the car move (they'll check). if you remove the rear axles or driveshaft like others were saying you'll be fine. if you run it as RWD only it hurts your chances because you have to protect the front and rear. I also have removed the rear driveshaft and the car operates fine. Remove the rear differential, split the rear axle shafts and sell that stuff. Relocate the fuel pump, if your allowed. It has small pinion gears inside it which let one wheel turn faster than the other on the same axel. It also lets you get stuck with one wheel spinning and the other doing nothing. If you weld the pinion gears together, it makes the front axel one piece so that both wheels have to spin to get stuck. Turning while going forwards gets harder.
