main difference between the two swaps

Featured Replies

I might be picking up a 87 brat from MR. Mcbrat in the next week and I am looking in to doing a ej22 swap with this car. My main question I have is what is the big difference from doing a ej22 swap on a ea81 then a ea82? The reason I ask is that I can find tons of post for the swap on a ea82 but I can not find much info on a ea81 swap. OH one more thing.. I dont know if it matters but it has a 4 speed D/R tranny.

Thanks

i beleave the frame rails are to close together. so slight modifacation will have to be done there. i have not done a swap on an ea81 but i have done one on an ea82 and it was an easy swap.

I had Austin's water wagon, an 1980 EA-81, and if the EJ fit in there, which it did, then it will fit in your 87 Brat no problem.

You need an adaptor plate for the trans.... OR you could use an EJ AWD trans but you will need to change the DOJ's on your front axles to match the EJ trans. Need to change the rear diff, and the driveshaft as well if you go that route.

so what is the necessary modification needed if using both EJ motor and tranny? does crossmember work? is the axle issue as easy as switching the front DOJ's? what is the EJ gear ratio? is it 3.9 too? I just scored a complete drive train from an impreza and was thinkin the whole AWD thing would be cool seeing how I rarely offroad. Thinkin of one of my t-coupes maybe cause one has possible bad engine, haven't determined problem yet though. It would probably make for a sleeper car for sure:brow: .

as i understand it, the tranny tunnel has the have the crap pounded out of it for the larger EJ tranny to squeeze in there. the impreza and legacy trannys are mostly 4.111, not the 3.90 in your tranny, but since you have the whole drivetrain you wont have to worry about trying to match diff to tranny. you'll need your drivshaft to be shortened because the legacy/impreza trannys are longer because of the AWD.

is there a benefit to using both or would it be more realistic to use motor only? I kinda like the AWD thing but I am not opposed to using an EA81/82 tranny, probably 5spd d/r.
