Should I buy a cheap torque Wrench to tighten the axle nut??? And how many ft/lbs should it be??? I know in my last post it was mention 150 around, is this ok.. And Thanks Again ALL.....

Tight as you can get it. VW bus rear axle nuts are the same size, and those are spec at 250 Ft/lbs

 

I personally go with a 3 ft breaker, and socket. I jump on that a few times with my 200 lbs, then I take to it with the VW axle nut remover tool. Basicall a hand operated impact. With that I can get em to probably close to 300 Ft/lbs or so. Never had any problems. Lots of others do the same with no ill effect.

 

No torque wrench needed.

Yeah, as long as you reef on it and put the cotter pin in and good. You'll have no problems.

 

I put mine at 150lbs and have no problems.

pretty much thread the nut on till its snug with a breaker bar, then torque it down 1/4 turn and this will approxiate the torque value

No matter how tight you may have got it, go back and check them in a week or so. They light to loosen up sometimes. I use the stand on 3' breaker bar trick too, works great every time.

Officially, it's 145 ft-lbs; but the tighter the better.

i use a 100psi impact gun on mine. my dad, who works at a Subaru dealership, showed me an axle with the splines completely worn off because the nut backed off. on the bright side it was rear drive only for a while.

I've done the rear disc brake conversion on my Brat. Got the drivers side all set and good. Went to the passenger side, inadvertently left the cup over the bearing, put hub and disc on and finally realized what the deal was, pulled cup off finally got hub/disc lined up to get caliper on, tightened axel nut down and axel won't spin. So I Backed the nut off a little and axel will spin, axel seems tight and all without hub on. It did look like the bearing might have been a little dry.

 

Does this sound as though I'm in need of a new bearing?..ugh if so how difficult are they to replace??
