To all running Saab 900 IC's, did you pull them your selves?

I will be going to the junk yard tommorow and am going to get a saab 900 IC if there is one. To all of you that have the Saab 900 IC, did you take them off the car your selves. If so what was involved in doing this, and what tools were needed if you can remember. I just want to know so that I have everything I need to take it off the car.

I didnt, but ive seen where they're located in the saabs. If you are going to the junkyard, bring a prybar and a couple screwdrivers. A utility knife may help too.

 

Break everything surrounding the intercooler, but leave the intercooler in tact. Cut anything that maybe holding the intercooler to the car and then use a prybar to bend anything that maybe in the way. Then carefully extract the intercooler :lol:

 

It shouldnt be too hard, an adjustable wrench or a socket set may help. The turbo hoses are most likely connected to the intercooler with hoseclamps so bring both screwdrivers with you.

 

Oh and by the way, you'll find the Intercooler located on the passenger side of the engine, near the fender.

because we all like to go the JK and pull parts how would you feel if someone had pulled the engine from a subie and used a hammer to smash/break every other piece conected to the engine,ok but what happens when you need one of those smashed parts?As for the 900IC take the time to take it apart properly or don't take it apart at all.If memory serves there are some desired parts in that area.the plastic you refer to is the IC air duct,last time I say one on ebay it went for $25.

also the intercooler you want comes from a 16Valve turbo.8V's normally dont have intercoolers.

It's usually hard to find intercoolers still in the cars out in the yard. I'd keep an eye on Craigslist if you don't find one tomorrow, they are usually pretty cheap.

 

But, yeah, the turbo 900 Saabs are super common in yards, I see them all the time. GOOD LUCK!

Maybe he would have to break stuff to find it....because Im preety sure it lives in the drivers side front.;)

Thats exactly where it is. I never had to destroy any of my Saabs to get the IC out.

 

Maybe I'm just special that way *shrug*

Well today is the day, I hope they have one because this is an import yard only with one or two domestic cars.

 

Oh and as for takeing off the fender to get to it I just remembed that I cant, they are welded to the car. So maybe just the bumpr but hopefully not even that.

I have a shix list of people who I never bring to the J/y because of that style.

Even breaking windshilds, hey it's going through the crusher anyway. I just get pissed off because it is showing disrespect to anyone who might want parts after you, and the J/Y owner because you just trashed a bunch of marketable parts

ITS A FREAKING JUNKYARD!! NOT WALMART! I dont know if the junkyard here are the same as yours, but the cars we have in our junkyard are... well... JUNK! This isnt a carlot full of new model showcars, the cars I pull parts off of have been rolled, burned, hit from the front, hit from the rear, t-boned. My initial post was actually a joke, but since you guys like to hug and kiss your parts cars i guess i should have thought twice.

 

I guess i wont mention all the parts I pocket.

I usually stay out of 'emotional' debates on online forums, but...

 

There are a couple of types of people in the world. Those that care about other people, and those that don't. What's an extra 5 minutes in the jy to you if it means helping another subaru nut out? Hell, I'd buy you a cheap socket set if you lived in my town so I knew you had the tools you needed to do the job RIGHT, and so I knew that when I wanted parts they'd be either gone or whole, not busted up.

 

I think when I was 16 and pulling parts for my Ford Escort I enjoyed breaking things... But I quickly outgrew that. If you wanna trash a vehicle, buy one from the junkyard and trash it on your own property. One man's JUNK is another man's treasure.

 

As for stealing parts... The yards I go to, I buy something large ( >$20), and they GIVE me little things (clips, relays, whatever). I had a handful of little things once and they charged me $1 for whatever I had. If you don't like the price, haggle with them. Or go buy aftermarket, if you can get it, for 5x as much.

 

Just my 2 cents.

PS- You're right, it's not Walmart. It's just another small business trying to make it that you're stealing from.

I pulled Junkies 900 IC from the junk yard.

It was not all that dificult to get at. mabey 15 min tops with a decent set of basic tools.

 

I understand both sides of the prats removal arguments. I go with mixed policy. I dont damage any thing unless it is a part of little value or would really save some time and effort in pulling my desired part.

 

but the point of the thread was about pulling the IC. My answer is it is easyer than pulling a saab 9000 IC or a ford(mazda626) probe IC. so go for it go get that Intercooler.

Yeah, it cant be too hard to pull... its only an intercooler.

 

And for the record, ive never broken anything at the junkyard that i didnt HAVE to break. Again, my original post was a joke, but i guess humor doesnt portray itself well over the internet.

 

The junkyards I goto dont "haggle" its either, buy it or put it in a bin over there and we'll dispose of it. Its also not a mom & pop operation, Pick-n-pull is a nationwide franchise... i pay $2 to enter the place wether I buy anything or not. So most the time, I pay $2 for a pocket of lug nuts or 10mm bolts (can never run out of those).
