Anybody know and tricks to getting the wrist pins out easily on an EA-82? I'm using a screwdriver with the end bent over ata 90 and it is a serious pain. I don't see any way to get at them from the "back" to push them through, so I guess I'm stuck pulling them out.

and you can take the idea and do what youwish with it soo...

 

bought a simple set of punches from Craftsman cost like 7-8 bucks.

 

There are three that really make it smooth.

The big round one with the pencil like tip is used for reinstalling them.

 

The one of similar size and the tiny ones (both of these are flat faces AKA no points)

 

First off i go at it from under neath (more elbow room)

2nd is I find the side that has the concave mouth - found it ? good.

3nd goto the opposite side of the DOJ (hub) and use the punch and hammer to easily tap them out.

 

4th specificaly the angle i use *initally* with the tiny punch is as steep of an angle as I can safetly go and sorta have the punch slide against the inner wall of the hole as it slowly shoves the pins out the other side.

 

Once its just barely started then i use the biger one to hit it nearly straight on untill its stopped up against the mouth of the DOJ (hub).

 

then use the tiny one again for those last few taps and its out and off comes the hub.

 

i have tried both the hub replaced on the tranny without the pin briefly started and without... I have somany times gotten it just one spline off that I quite intially setting the pin in the hub UNTIL i get the hub and the tranny splines lined up and then i do a couple taps to set it in the hub. Once in the hub the hardest part for me has been the "hold the hub against the tranny" while tapping the pin in at the sametime.... without the hub sliding away"just enough" to not let the pin go thru the tranny stub.

There is a factory tool for that. I haven't seen one but I'm guessing it goes in the pin and expands and then is removed with a slide hammer. I thought about making designed like the gooseneck of a bicycle. As you tighten it, it expands, then the slide hammer would pull it out. Maybe somebody can post a pick of one. I tried to borrow one last summer to pul a engine apart but had no luck, maybe one is available now?

I think the first reply threw me off, You are talking about the pistion wrist pin right? If so you can make up your own tool to get them out. Whot you do is go to a home improvement store, and get one of those little butterfly things for putting hooks into dry wall. Then get a piece of all thread that will thread into it in place of the little rod that comes with it. Then you take the butterfly and put into the hole in the wrist pin, there is a ridge in the middle that it will lock into, then you can get pull it out. It is a little easier if you put a T handle on the end of rod.

Yes I was talking about the piston Wrist pin. Got them out. Used what amounts to a bent over screwdriver on the end of a slide hammer. That and a little propane heat to the piston and out they came.

How hard were they to get out?

I have an allen wrench that the end is ground pretty short on. works great with a pair of vise grips and a hammer (pry). A slide hammer makes it simple.

The two facing the rear were a pain, but my biggest problem was keeping the tool from sliding off the pin. The entire process took about 15-20 minutes.

I made this tool out of a 1/4" stainless steel rod, that I had in my junkbox. Took about 5 minutes to make. Works nicely. Make it long enough so that you can give it a good whack with the hammer.

 

There is a tool that is used for pulling lifter out of an over head valve engine, it clamps itside the lifter, there is a small slide hammer with the tool, and you just tap the lifter out, I would imagine the same could be done with the Subaru wrist pin. I have such a tool, but haven't torn down a Subaru engine that far yet to find out if it does.
