Couple heating problems

Featured Replies

I have an 87 RX. I'm having problems with it heating up to about 75% on the temp gauge. So far I've replaced a faulty radiator cap, and tightened the drain plug as much as I can, changed my waterpump belts and replaced my radiator hoses. The radiator at all times is cool to the touch over the entire thing even when the car is getting too warm/hot. The drainplug housing drips. The accessory fan does kick on to cool the motor. I can feel the water boiling on the turbo feed line. And feel the water boiling in the waterhousing to radiator hose. The coolant is bubbling into the overflow bottle and overflowing. The waterpump is definitely not leaking. The only 2 places the car is leaking noticeable coolant is at the radiator drain plug, only in drips, and the overflow bottle. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

if one side of you radiator hoses is warm or hot and the other side stays cool you have a blockage problem that could either be, like GD says a t-stat or you could have a cloged heater core or radiator, the heater core is more likely then the radiator.

I've blown head gaskets on two motors from stuck thermostats, get a new one, cheap insurance.

Just the fact you say parts of your radiator are cool to the touch means it's clogged. Get a new one.

Cool thank you for the feedback everyone, I'll give it a try.

be carefull with that.

i had the same diagnosis as what you said and i was driving one day and my engine just starting blowing heaps of smoke. i took it too the mechanics and they told me my heads had been cracked for some time which would have caused the heat - not trying to alarm you or anything :-\

if you find the radiater does not fix the problem..this is early stages of head gasket failure..the bubbling is a sign..see if you get any preasure in the rad before it heats up..if so..headgaskets..if not fix the flow problems before you disturb the headgaskets to much from the heat...goodluck..

Well I think its quite obvious I need a new radiator. Today I was out in the car and it sprung a massive vapor leak on the radiator under the electric fan. The radiator was cool to the touch. I took off the radiator cap and the coolant came out and it was all lukewarm. Definitely going to buy another radiator. Thanks guys.
