June 8, 200619 yr So any one running around with there rear diffs welded? How do they drive? I could imagine that you may hear some chirping going around tight corners but because they are basically being pulled along for the ride and no power being put to them not unless you are off road I don't see them being as bad. But what do I know.

I could imagine that you may hear some chirping going around tight corners but because they are basically being pulled along for the ride and no power being put to them not unless you are off road I don't see them being as bad. But what do I know. Lots of us have them - you have to pull a rear axle on pavement or you will snap axle joints with big tires. Smaller tires you will just get a lot of chirping and binding around corners - still hard on the joints, and better to pull one. GD
June 12, 200619 yr I've been running with the axle IN since last summer, and I have not noticed much binding at all. All I notice is I leave a lot of rubber on the concrete where ever I drive. (However my tires are much different than yours and I weigh less too...) I think you could "do" an axle in 15 minutes including putting the tools away? It will make a world of difference in your Subies ability to climb!
June 12, 200619 yr If the axle splines are always kept greased to prevent seizing, I can pop mine out in less than two mins. I don't run a welded diff yet though....
June 13, 200619 yr besides helping when climbing, they are also needed for deep mud holes and when you get the car twisted in those awckard positions going into ruts, over logs, roots, rocks or that deep rut on the leftside on a climb were your right tire loses traction and the weight of the car. welding the diff is very useful and i'm with everyone else it doesn't take long to get the axle in and out. a minor inconvience ( if any, not for me though) for what you gain on the trail.
