June 15, 200619 yr i was wondering if it was possiable to put a ea82t and a D/R 5SPD in a brat i am looking at that as my next project seeing as how i am bored of my loyale and cant get the ground clearence i want anyway. not enough people for help in the retrofit
June 15, 200619 yr The EA82T should pretty much drop in after you get wiring done. As for the 5 spd d/r, you should read http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=49952
June 16, 200619 yr i havent actually done one, but im pretty sure. the ea8t is a wider engine than the ea81 you will need to cut and shut the chassis rails to squeeze it in what i have done is an ej22 sohc in a my wagon (same engine bay) apart from woring was basically a bolt in thing will need to have an adapter plate to fit the gearbox to the motor and modify the gearbox crossmember for the 5 speed and the linkages
June 16, 200619 yr will need to have an adapter plate to fit the gearbox to the motor and modify the gearbox crossmember for the 5 speed and the linkages Won't need any adapter plate since he's mating an EA engine to an EA transmission. And many say you do not need to bend the frame rails or anything. It'll fit with very little clearance left.
June 16, 200619 yr http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=59487 Scroll down to reply #12, tells of things needed done to put EA-82 into EA-81 vehicle. With the Turbo, you'll have to mod the engine crossmember to clear the up-pipe. Or, find the crossmember for a Turbo EA-81 and swap it in, those are sort of hard to find really, but they're out there. You won't have to worry about the flywheel stuff in that post seeing as you're going with the 5 speed.
June 16, 200619 yr And many say you do not need to bend the frame rails or anything. It'll fit with very little clearance left. This is wrong if the car is lifted. I have an EA82 in my lifted wagon, and an EJ20G in my stock height GLF-5. The wagon required way more cutting of the chassis rails than the coupe did, in particular on the LH back where it had to clear the dizzy. The EA82 is the widest Subaru motor I've seen. From memory I had to redrill the plates between the mounts and the motor to bring them inwards, it was either that or elongating the crossmember holes, as you do in an EJ conversion.
June 16, 200619 yr Author well what it seems like is that its mostly bolt in in a gen two brat http://usmb.net/gallery/garners-sub-a-rama?page=1 this guy has an ea82t in his gen2 but doesnt look like he had to mod too much
June 16, 200619 yr Cross member will not work with the EA82T exhaust, and you'll have the mentioned frame rail issues if you lift the vehicle, but other than that it will fit alright with some mods. That said, the EA82T is a finicky peice (of junk) - not worth the trouble IMO. Far easier to swap an NA EJ22 - no turbo, no exhuast problems, and 20 more HP. Best of all they are now MORE common than the EA82T, more reliable, and cheap - whole donor cars can be had for under $500 if you look around a bit. GD
June 17, 200619 yr i have done this conversion not too long ago. some people say you dont have to touch the frame rails but i found i had to massage them with a hammer. the engine fitted without doing this but touched when the motor rocked on its mounts when running. if your gonna lift it you will definetley have to cut and shut the rails to clear the cambelt covers. cut and strengthen the crossmember to clear the exhaust crossover pipe. i used the original dr 4speed so i dunno about the 5 speed conversion.
