just making sure before i go to the junkyard, no difference between right and left front axels? also i've put axels from a wagon in my hatch, i would assume brat axels would work too? what about sedans and hardtops. what about ea81 turbo axels, are they the same as non turbo?

They should all be the same as long as they stay on the same engine. ea 81 will not work with ea 82 and vise versa allthough I think ea 71 and ea 81 are the same. not sure on that one.But there is no differance between left and right .

EA71 transmissions and axels are completely different

EA81 and EA82 FWD transmissions are exactly the same

EA81 and EA82 front axles are different, but left and rights among designation are the same

EA81 rear axles are different from front axles, and are swappable between left and right. same with EA82.

Turbo and Non-Turbo axles are different. But on any of the cars, Left and Right Axles..No difference

my '84 hatch is a std 2wd and has the same axles as my brats, dose this mean I've got the elusive wide body bell housing I've heard rumors about?

well i know thats not completely true, as my ea71 hatch swapped axels with my ea81 hatch.

oh and yes your std hatch (84) would have the wide bellhousing. starters on the left, right? so your from rifle huh? only two things come from rifle.........

EA71 depends on which bell houseing it has. If the starter is in the middle, the axles will be different. If the starter is to the right like an EA81, then the axles are the same as any EA81 axle. I have pulled axles from cars with EA71's and the right hand starter. In fact - my EA81 Brat has one of them on it right now.

 

Also - EA81T axles are the same as regular EA81 axles - the turbo differences started with the EA82 and EA82T.

 

I don't know if you would call the EA71 bell houseing elusive. A lot of the EA71's in stage 2 cars and Brat's were like that. I've seen a couple.

i aint sayin the ones from the 70's weren't different, tho. that i wouldn't know.

 

the ea81 bellhousing on the ea71 is elusive..... when you're looking for one.

The 80 4wd hatch I had, had an EA71 with old style bellhousing. It used the same axles as the rest of the EA81 body style with 4wd.

 

Also EA81 2wd and EA82 2wd axles are not the same. The EA82 axles have a longer shaft.

OK - maybe it's that it has to be an EA71 that's IN a Gen 2 car. Pretty sure Gen 1 axles won't fit in Gen 2 cars. It may be the length and possibly the outer end of the axle that is the difference.

 

I do agree tho that at least SOME EA71 axles will indeed fit on the EA81 - done it myself, so you just have to look and see.

the ea81 turbo ale will fit the same as a non turbo. although the axle itself might be thicker in diameter, it will have the same spline count as a normal axle. EA81T's came from the factory with the automatic. The automatic has the same spline count 4spd dual range, 2wd 5spd, 4wd automatic, and 2wd automatic.

That is not true. I had an ea81t wagon that had a 5spd 4wd from an ea82 installed. So that means that not only does the 5spd dual range have the same spline count, but that means that any ea82 5spd 4x4, 4wd automatic, 2wd 5spd, and 2wd auto have tha same spline count, as well as non-turbo single range pushbutton 5spd. On ea82 Turbo models, any with the 4wd and 2wd 3spd automatic will have the same spline count. But the single range pushbutton 4wd 5spds and 4spd full time autos, and rx dual range 5spds have a different spline count.

The transmissoin with the starter on the top is the ea71 BBELLHOUSING, and the one with the starter on the top has the EA81 bellhousing. so if the axle will fit from an ea71 single rangetransmission onto an ea81 dual range transmission, then that means the same axle will fit on any of the aforementioned transmissions(except for the mentioned turbo transmissions).

this also proves that either mentioned axle will fit against either mentioned transmisson in either a gen1 pre-79 and gen2 80-84wagon, sedan,coupe -89 hatch and brat, in either combination

so is true. that is because the ea82 has a wider track than ea81 and earlier bodies. using any ea82 or ea81 axle against any transmission will depend strictly on which body it is going on.

 

but my 83 wagon has ea82 axles! no that's not impossible, and no, it didnt just fit. that's my secret for now(although some of you may know what it is!)
