Any one know of a good brand of battery cable??? I'm getting ready to hook up my winch and I want to start with new battery cables but I don't want to get cheap junk ones. Many thanks, Tim

They're called welding cable. You can get any size wire you want in any length. Just install (solder) on the ends you need.

Yeah - welding cables are good - then solder the copper ends on to them. You need to use a torch for the solder operation....

 

Or I just generally get the napa ones with the molded ends on them - far superior from stock (at least they are copper not aluminium), and the molded lead ends are alright if you fashion a washer to go under the nut so it doesn't destroy them when you tighten them down.

Again I am amazed by the simplicity of the answer. I have 25' of 2 guage copper welding wire in my garage that has been hanging on the wall for at least 8 years because I didn't know what to do with it. Guess I try my hand at building cables. Thanks guys:headbang:

Just made a set for a dual-battery system for my tractor. There are 2 basic types of solder. One works for this application and the other doesn't. Can't recall the 2 types at the moment. What I did was mount the copper lug in a vise and then used a propane torch to fill the lug with molten solder. Then just push the cable into the lug. Use only 3M shrink wrap tubing if you want to prevent future corrosion problems. The other brands I have used are not up to the 3M quality standard. A cable cutter really makes cutting the cable easy. Hacksaw really makes a mess.

I have lived my whole life hating NAPA. I couldn't tell you for certain that they DON'T have cable lugs, but to read that shocked me.

 

I suppose the stores down here just stink. Anyone care to sound off on NAPA stores, up north versus southeast US/Florida? because I have never seen a very large, or very helpful store.. they are usually just slightly overpriced.

If you want to upgrade the battery i would go with a dual terminal Optima battery as long as I am plugging companies/brands.

 

I also used the style of battery cable terminal that has an additional threaded stud. I used the stud to mount the alternator charge wire and glow plug feed wire.

napa here in northeast florida sucks as well even with a warehouse here in town. they are just to overpriced and lack of inventory. even for stuff for my 73 ford f-100. and that is a common truck. a$$h***'s just my 2 cent on napa

 

but as for a battery, i have an optima red top in my gl and no problems yet and i have used and abused it well. best battery for the money i think.

are you just about ready? I just got my new xt6 pressure plate and flywheel turned to xt6 specs, and new clutch disc. hopefully will get it in this weekend, along with my welded diff again....

I've been struggling with the rear seals on my new motor. I hope I now have it sealed. But I have a winch so everything is good. When the rain lets up I'll finish up and take it for a test drive, Wish me well on it:clap: . Later, Tim
