EJ Swap w/ Guage Cluster Question

Featured Replies

I've seen pics of people using Impreza guage clusters in their EA81s and was wondering since I hopefully will be getting an EJ out of an Impreza if I grab the cluster too is it a more or less direct bolt in swap. The cluster and engine will be from a 1993 Impreza. I know I have ALOT of work to do for the engine swap and figured I might make it a little easier (and nicer) if I use the donor cluster as well. Any help/ tips would be appreciated on the guage cluster swap as I know their are TONS of EJ swap threads to sort through, but I haven't really seen anything about the cluster swaps.

Ive wondered about if that would work in a legacy. I dont hink its a direct swap. The newer clusters have 4 main plugs, then there is the two wire plug for the spedo.

You would have to figure out how to convert to a electronic spedo.

I did a little fitting of a gen 1 legacy cluster into a spare standard/dl dash. Its not that big of a deal, just need to make a bracket or too for mounting it securely.

Sorry guys, forgot to mention this will be going into my 1985 Brat.:-p

It'll fit in the brat cluster opening prett good. It will just have gobs of open space. And yes it will make the wiring MUCH simpler. Thats why I started looking into it.

Are you keeping the original 4spd tranny?

I wired in my auxillary gauges to the dimmer switch...Now I can hardly drive at night becuase I cant see the backlights for the speedo/tach/etc...all of the other lights work in the dash.. like the little headlights...

I don't think so. there are dozens of wires going in there for other indicators and such for the EA chassis, and only 2? for the EJ (tach and temp). I'd rather splice 2 wires into a cluster that already fits, than a bunch of wires, for indicators that might not be there, for a cluster that doesn't fit.

I mean sure, you wouldn't have to hook up some of those things, headlight and door indicators for example, but your gas gauge (who knows if the resistance is the same) etc.

and I'm 99% certain that a '93 imp will still have a cable speedo.

Thats a good call. I wasn't even considering fuel gauge, signals, tell tale graphic, and the rest.

make it 100%. i missed the year of the donor cluster.
