I can get 31X10.50X15 Super swamper SSR's for about 130 ish a tire.But I have to lift my roo to fit them so + 600 + 520= 1120

 

Or I can get some of those niffty ATV tires that mount on a 14" rim and carry 700-925 LBS per wheel.I can get those for about 100-130 a tire but they are 25-27" tall which means I dont need lift to fit them.Then run 25 psi.

 

SSR Pros

DOT legal so can drive to trail then go offroading

best DOT mud tire

SSR Cons

Need lift(more $$$)

They wear out quickly on street so might as well run 2 sets of tires

 

ATV Pros

TREMENDOUS traction off road

Dont need lift to fit

ATV Cons

Low speed rating

Not DOT legal so put tires on at trailhead

appoach/depart/breakover angles suck from no lift.

 

 

Car is a 1987 GL wagon with EJ22.5 speed DR and Rusted out fenderwells.Terrain is mostly trailriding.Meaning following a very muddy,rutted trail through the woods.Mud is Very thick and heavy Clay type mud.

 

So What do I do?Swampers would get the body out of the mud,But ATV tires would have enough traction to drag the car along.than and with a welded rear both would be close to unstopable.

lift it and get the ssr's. they have awesome traction in the mud and snow. after i had those. i'll only run swampers in washington. there's no real draw backs, more lift, more clearance, swampers will keep digging till your out and they have a better payload. just don't air them down too far. 15 psi should be good. i know tex punctured a sidewall 5 years back. i think we were aired down to around 10 to 12 psi and he ran over a sharp rock with the sidewall.

You make it sound like you'll be going over some rough terrain.

Does this terrain include steep climbs?

Small bolders and short climbs could be dealt with large tires and no gears.

 

Your not going to power up anything steep with a 31" on your Sub!

You have functionally taken away your low range with the big tires.

You would have 4 hi only.

 

I can only speak from my experience. In my neck of the woods,

we have long steep climbs on many trails. Gearing is everything.

Many times, clearance can be dealt with if you have good gearing.

 

I put 26X12X12's six ply's on the SubaruHummer. They measure out to a 25.5.

This is not a big tire but the gearing is noticibally higher than the 22.5 stock tires.

My whole point is, I run out of motor well before I run out of traction.

 

To make a good off-road machine you need to balance the power, gearing, weight and traction.

 

Without major surgury (Divorced transfer case), I'd opt for a more flexable

tire choice so you can apply the power you have appropriately.

 

What are others in your area getting away with?

Talk with some locals and see what they are getting away with before you make your purchasing decision?

remember, he's running an EJ22....so the power thing isn't nearly as much of an issue.

i ran the 27" ssr's all over in washington with a 1600. the tiny clutch on a 1600 suffered. but it went all over. with an ej22, no problem! awesome tires! like i said just don't air them down to far, interco radials are not known for being the strongest radial sidewalls. a 4/3" lift kit and some trimming and hammering, fit perfect.

Should I even lift it?I could run 27" tires with out a whole lot of bashing.But my approach, My departure,and my breakover angles still suck.Custum bumpers would fix some of that...Hmmm maybe I will lift it later...

No, bumpers won't help your angles. Your radiator/core support is your approach angle. If you protect it with stuff, you lose even more approach angle.

Your Y-pipes will always be there.

:confused: you approach angle will always suck! unless you incorporate moving the suspension forward a few inches. which means a lift and second tcase! :dead:

yes, you are... all those pics are 4/3" or 3" lifts. and only 27" tires. :Flame:
