My Loyale got bashed up pretty bad today. The short story is that a guy made a left hand turn in front of me and here's the results...

There wasn't much visible damage to the Saturn Ion...My poor subie was bleeding antifreeze and oil. There's a possibility that the traffic lights were giving him the green arrow and me the green light, so the insurance companies are going to have fun with this one. Does it look worth repairing or should I start looking for a new one?

just my .02 cents - find yourself another one for the time being - leave this one alone until the insurance co's are done and everything is settled.

also - dont sign ANYTHING without the advice of a good attorney.

 

after all is said & done - then look into wether or not she may be fixable - with the amount of damage on the left side it may be iffy...bleeding oil? not good

 

what a shame, she was a nice looking one.

Oh NO! Thats terrible! Sorry to hear about your car. My 91 Loyale was killed on 395 by a piece of plywood and it was in cherry shape like yours. It ended up to be big $$ to have it fixed, but Subaru's are cheap. You will find another one in short time.

 

What intersection were you in?

hey that is a rare saturn also. that color was very low production. kinda looks like an Easter egg. when i worked at a saturn dealership we called it "Boy Toucher Blue"...

 

that sucks for your Subaru. i just hope its one less BTB ion on the road.

It was the intersection of Rock and I-80. I was going North and he was coming South and going onto 80 east. Thanks for all the replies.

To be honest with you, I highly doubt it you could fix her. The leaking anti freeze is not of a big concern, but the leaking oil suggests that either the engine is badly damaged or the subframe shifted and mashed your oil pan.

 

Either way, it's going to cost you a lot to fix.

 

Also if you look at how far the fender is pushed in, I would be surprised if the frame rail is still straight'ish.

 

So try to get as much from the insurance co. as possible and buy yourself another subie. Just be glad that the car took the most damage and not you.

Is it an Automatic? My car leaked out all it's auto trans fluid cause the radiatior was busted. Could be just a valve cover busted too. But hey, at least your out there where you actuallly could find another soob and swap your good parts onto it. If that happened to me here in Wisconsin, I'd be planning another trip out to Oregon or California for another.

 

Edit: OK my dialup finally finished the pics. Hmm... For sure you could fix it to be *driveable* and probably to no even look too bad. But My time working in Autobody tells me that the subframe is for sure shifted. $$$$$ to get the frame streched(if a shop will even do it,some cars they won't) I'd say buy a nice used loyale with a crappy trans or motor. Or maybe dented doors. Get yourself some kind of usable transplant car and put all the good parts into it. What to do with the old wrecked Loyale?? Pull off the fenders, weld the rear diff and put some 30" tires on it. Mad max style off road machine.

That really sucks man. That was a damn good looking car too.

 

I hate to say it but the insurance company is most likely going to total it, and give you little to nothing for it. Fight with them, tell them you don't want their money you want a replacement of equal condition and value. This will not be easy, because the nada values of our cars are nowhere near what a perfect condition subie will actually sell for. Good luck my friend.

My friend just had an 88 DL totalled by the insurance company. They gave him $2200 for it, but they took the car. In 2001 I got $1900 for my 85 GL after a rear ending. I got to keep the car though. Don't take the first offer. Go online and get an autotrader, prove that there are Soobies out there of higher value and you'll get more.

Most of the time you can buy it back for 10% of what they pay you, Flowmastered87GL had almost the same thing happen to him, but it wasn't as much of a direct hit, wrinkled the fender and the bumper, but they gave him $600 something for his wagon, and he bought it back for $65 I think, bought some parts from the junkyard and traded me the bumper he found for mine (since the one he found was white, and I had a Loyale bumper on my TW) and drove it for another year I think until the engine started making funny noises and he parted it out.

And any subaru. And they are really cheap! Serius! They'v got headlight's, corner light, Fenders, Hoods, Ton's of engine Mechanicaland engine eletricle. Everything and anything. That's were i bought alot of part's for mine!

After a week without a car I called his insurance again and got things rolling. They were able to contact him and he admitted that he was at fault! Yay for me, but the adjuster said they are most definitely going to total my car. I just hope they give me a resonable amount for it and then don't try to rip me off if I try to get it back. In any case I'll find out tomorrow how much they'll give me for it!

My '92 Loyale got stolen and totaled in November.

The insurance company offered me something like $1900, and their supporting documentation showed several "comparable" cars from dealerships. I told them that I didn't think it was enough and started looking on craigslist. At the time, there were about half a dozen other Loyales for sale in my area. I printed them all up (made .pdf files to e-mail them, actually) and sent them in. For the one or two cars that were in terrible shape, I made a case for not using them as examples, and gave them an average value for the better ones. I also listed all the improvements I had made to the car that would improve reliability and safety, including timing belts, clutch, wheel bearings, front axles, improved lighting, radiator, Pugeot wheels and performance all weather tires, etc. and pointed out that I would really need to get one in good shape in order to compare to the reliability of the car I had lost. The final settlement was for $3100 plus tax and license.

 

Moral of the story? Don't take the first offer. Do your research. Make a good case why your car was better than the average in terms of reliability and safety. Be willing to wait them out.

I haven't been around for a while so here's an update. insurance company still hasn't finalized anything yet, but they offer me about $1800 and I keep the car. I also just became the new owner of 87 GL wagon. Got that for $250 running and driveable. Its a little thrashed though. Skid plate and oil pan are dented pretty good and the drivers side exhaust isn't attached. One of the stud holes is totally busted, but it might have enough threads to get a little torque on it and the Y pipe isn't sitting flush with the manifold so it probably didn't even have the second stud when it hit the rock or whatever. In any case I plan on swapping out all the electronics from the loyale into the GL and pulling, resealing, and any other repairs needed the Loyale engine (oil comes from punctured oil filter) and putting it into the GL. Both are FI and I'll have to swap the senders so analog dash will still work, but thats no problem. It sure is nice having the cargo and map lights and the d/r 4wd, assuming it works. Haven't finished putting the loyale Y pipe onto the GL so haven't gotten to take it for an offroad test yet. Wouldn't want to melt the timing belt covers or anything. Hopefully I'll have it registered and everything by this Friday or Saturday along with pics since I'm outta town every weekday for work. Maybe I'll even be able to buzz around with you Reno guys soon!

Looks like a perfect candidate for a Subaru trailer. Gut it, Rhino the interior, clip the nose off and add a tow assembly. Oh, yeah, then find another one to pull it.

Don't think I'll make it to WCSS. Work keeps me out all week and then I'm home for the weekends. Kinda wears me out. At least I have something to drive now!

I would be estatic if an insurance company offered me $1800 for my 92 loyale. I seriously doubt that one in the northeast would be valued above $1000, no matter what the condition.

If I recall I got $700 or so for my 87 GL (at the time it had 287K) they said the damage was about $1500, so they paid me the value of the car and I bought it back for $55 I think and had to go back to the DMV and have a new salvage title issued. Cost me like $30 to fix in my case as the hit was WAY less severe.

 

I would keep your car, if your miles are lower than mine were you may be able to fight the insurance company.... but in my case I didnt bother since I could buy it back SOOOO Cheap.
