Torque Value

Featured Replies

Tomorrow I will be replacing the valve cover gaskets. What is the torque for these?

Thanks!

Its a relativly low number in inch lbs (dont have the book in front of me). Are yours leaking? Sometimes they just come loose.

6mm steel bolt running into aluminum.

More "snug" than "tight".

as you're tightening them up (gently), you'll feel them turn and turn, then suddenly snug up. stop there. like above, good and "snug", but not "tight"...they're sadly fairly easy to strip. the factory has a little bit of sealant on the bottom corners of the gasket and where it bends to go over the cams. BTW, a ratcheting wrench is your best friend when doing valve covers...

No theres no leak, but I still haven't got over the oil found on the Plug threads( I worry). Thus I purchased the Subaru gasket kit with all the various seals and gromets.

Last time I changed valve cover seals I accidently striped out the bolts(honda engine). Sometimes less is definately more.

OK. The oil in the spark plug holes is those seals. Four of these should be in your kit. When I put the valve covers back on, I got all the bolts in first, then eased up the torque in a couple of rounds. It takes a little bit to compress the new spark plug hole seals down.

The valve cover bolt holes can handle a little overtorque. I just realized I looked at the wrong torque when I did mine and went to 7.6 ft*lb(f). One did start to strip so that is probably about the limit.

Got it 1/2 done today! It is not a hard task, but the bottom two bolts are real pickle to get at,as they reside next to the frame rails.

Yeah, I had to do those with a boxed end wrench:dead:
