January 27, 200818 yr when my oil filler cap is tightened all the way it rattles from the motor idling. i can back it off a little and feel it get snug and the rattle stops. is it just wore out or is it some subaru engineering brilliance beyond my minds capabilities?
January 27, 200818 yr Possibly the rubber gasket in the there is hardened and shrunk. You could try replacing that, but it doesn't always help. I just bend down the tabs on the cap abit, so they grab tighter. Just had to do that for someone the other day. His was so looe it worked it' way off. I though he was just bad at remebering to put his cap back on after filling. But after 3 times in a month finding the cap on the splash gaurd, I believed him.
January 28, 200818 yr Here's what I do: 1. Put in a new gasket, if the old one is hard. 2. experiment with a few o rings (OD & thickness) under the gasket until you find the size that helps. This may or may not help. 3. Mostly, I do the back off until tight thing, don't go past the "bump".
January 28, 200818 yr I found a piece of cork cut to the correct diameter, worked a treat... I used the cork from a old rocket cover gasket, the bit that is left over when you buy new gaskets.
January 28, 200818 yr I go into the local auto parts store and order a new cap for $7. That's what I do.
January 28, 200818 yr There is a good Subaru junkyard in Clinton. He would have one there. Good to see more members from TN on here.
January 28, 200818 yr Author There is a good Subaru junkyard in Clinton. He would have one there. Good to see more members from TN on here. thanks.also a killer junkyard in newport called raceway. has anybody dealt with a place called subarus r us near asheville nc ? i pass it on the interstate but have never stopped. looks like they have a lot of stuff. as parts are getting harder to get maybe someone smarter than me could start a thread showing good junkyards around the country. thanks for the feedback.
January 28, 200818 yr I think Subaru_dude went to the one in newport last week. If it is the one I am thinking of, it has a turbo brat there.
January 28, 200818 yr I go into the local auto parts store and order a new cap for $7. That's what I do. Problem is not always with the cap. Often the tangs on the filler tube itself are slightly bent "up". A small tap with a SFH (small f....... hammer) will usually bend them just enough to make the cap snug again. It's just a piece of stamped steel, not that hard to bend a tad. Spending money on new parts won't always fix everything. Sometimes you've gotta "engineer" a solution.
January 28, 200818 yr Following on the heals of Gloyale's "Sometimes you've gotta "engineer" a solution." We old farts have what are called "senior moments". This pict speaks for itself Note: hard to see the small tag on the chain, it states the mileage of the last oil change.
January 28, 200818 yr Looks like some kind of chain setup one would see in a toilet tank. If it works...
January 28, 200818 yr actually it's called "jack chain" But if you wanna rob the one out of your water closet??? More power to ya. Maybe I should explain, I forgot to put the cap back on once after adding oil. Now if I do, it's not ten miles behind me.

Haven't tossed all the parts yet. I know where the chain is going.
