how can i get into a gas cap that i have no key for? can i drill a 12 mm hole in the lock cylinder, and just open it? i gotta get it open tonite, so if i get no replies, i might just go at it with a drill and chisel and hammer.

If it's just one of those plastic locking gas caps like you find at WalMart just take a wide flathead screwdriver to it. They're not really that difficult to open.

BTW, locking fuel caps are usually found on gas filler tubes containing highly flammable gases. I'd recommend NOT using a hammer and chisel or drill (friction results in heat and potentially static discharge).

I had mine keyed at a locksmith booth - cost me like $10.....

 

There really simple locks, and can be keyed in about 5 minutes if he's taking his time...

If you had picks you'd be done with it by now, short of that, I'd go with the screwdriver or vice grip routine. Won't take long to peal it back, no matter which way you choose.

 

The only real decision is what cap to put back on........cause the old one aint goin back on!

 

Drilling may leave metal flakes in your tank! (What I'm saying is you'll make more shrapnel for the explosion!):madder:

Is there some sort of key code on the cap? Maybe you could get a key made off the number.

my EA81 Wagon has a locking gas cap. I was able to open it using a small flathead screwdriver until i found the key for it.

There was no key code, but a good smith can make a key in minutes - they have a very simple key pattern - at least mine did. The pattern was so simple as to almost not be a lock at all. It was just a bunch of the same ridge over and over - not a complex cut. He made it from a blank with a hand file, standing next to my car! - no cutting tools required.

The last EA81 gas cap I had to get open took 3 people, a hammer, 2 chisels and a power drill to get open. Not fun. Good luck! (The screwdriver didn't work for me, maybe it was an aftermarket cap?)

Those plastic ones I'm talking about are "Stant" brand. Pretty cheap and easy to bypass.

There are people on this board who will vouch for me. Moosens was working the drill.

well at least we know you 3 won't be stealing gas from a car with a locking cap

it was bad, but not that bad, i only dropped a little bit of it into the gas tank. hammer and screwdriver. the gentle method didnt work, it was all metal, a pretty nice one.

if you have the type that just spins but wont come off when locked. just drive a nail into it, offset a bit. and turn.

poped a few that way real quick.
