to the pipe fittings gurus does this exist

Featured Replies

ok here is a crappy drawing of what i am looking for. i am going to make a surge tank and am trying to figure out the piping to come out of it. short of just welding some tubing on to it i was looking to have some nice fittings that would seal up nice.

so does this exist or am i just making up new parts in my head?

also what are some other options to do the basic idea this picture shows. i can weld some tubing on but want to do that as a last effort thing. also maybe welding on a nut then a use some sort of screw in fitting could be a possibility

You are looking for a bulkhead fitting. Hard to find, expensive.

I have made them from compressioin & flare fittings. You need to find an adapter that goes from flare or compression to bigger pipe, so you have the face for the o-ring to press against. Braze or solder a tube to the outside end. Modify the nut so it can be used like your sketch.

The best part I found to make a bigger one was a hydraulic plug. The kind that use an o-ring, with a hex key to turn it. Drill through the hex socket, pipe tap the hole. Also, get one of the jam nuts for the hydraulic fitting. What was the wrench side of the plug originally becomes the inside the tank part, the nut goes on from outside.

In brass you can get those all day with compression fittings for tubing. Common and inexpensive. You could use copper or steel tubing but you need the right ferules for steel.

With a bit of searching, you could get stainless I'm sure.

But yes, you essencially want a bulkhead fitting. Although it would be better to just weld in a bung and use a compression fitting with a slide in tube - that would allow the inner tube to be adjusted for depth (I'm assuming you want a pickup tube). Cut the end of the tube at a 45 degree angle to keep it off the bottom of the tank.

I'll ask at work after the exact nomenclature of the slide-fitting that I'm thinking of. We use a lot of stuff like that, but I'm not sure of the exact name if you wanted to buy one.
