What should I know about LSD?

Featured Replies

I would like to put a limited slip in my (soon to be lifted) D/R 84 Hatch. What should I know about buying a used one? How durable are they? Any particular year I should be after? Etc. Etc. Any info would be much appreciated.

Most important item: your hatch is most likely a 3.9 rear end ratio. Most of the Subaru LSDs are 3.700. You'll need to convert a good 3.900 rear to LSD using parts from the 3.700 rear.

that and brown lsd is bad. aaaaand i have a used lsd for sale for $125 and i can take the relevant parts out for your swap and send only them, if you like. :D

Make sure to use proper lube in the LSD. (Not sure what that would be.)

DO NOT put 2 different size tires on the rear of your car. Burned out 2 LSDs many moons ago with same set of mismatched rear tires. (67 Cougar GT and 71 Road Runner. (Burning lots cherrios took out the 3rd LSD in the Roadrunner. Kids those days!)

Dude! You gonna have John lift it for you?

Portland eh? So are you gonna go play with the Hatch Patrol with me? I'm in West Linn.....

Maybe we could find some local mud? Would love to have someone around here to play with.

If your intention is crazy off-roading - welding the rear is the way to go. Cheaper too. LSD's are nice for a daily driver tho.

I acctually have a question to add. Are the early (EA82) LSD's a different type than the later (EJ's) LSD's? I ask becous I've had 3 LSDs out of EA cars and they seem almost locked, very hard to turn in opposite directions. But the EJ LSDs are alot easier to turn.

Whats the dill yo?

I think the EJ series had both types - but yes, at least some of the EJ's are VLSD's - great for on-road - but useless for off-road as I understand it.

GD.. I am going to tackle the lift myself. It might be a little while, I still have some other work to do on it.

I would like to weld the rear, but I still want to drive it around town. I wish there was some way to disengage one side conveniently for street use. I might end up welding it anyway.

Does limited slip really work that well to begin with? I don't want to settle for something that just works ok.

I can't wait to get everything done so I can hit the real trails. :headbang:

That would be cool to have someone else to wheel with. I'm up for off-roading just about anytime. I've found some good spots somewhat nearby Scappoose, where do you go?

Well - if you don't want to settle for just "ok", then welded it is! You can disengage it pretty easily - 3/16" pin punch, and pull one rear drive shaft. Once you have done it a few times, you'll get very fast at it - less than 2 minutes. With the lift there's no need to jack it up - just go under, pop out the pins, and take that shaft off. Really quite easy. Putting it back on takes a little longer, but not bad.

Saddly - I don't know any places close to go. Scappoose is as good as anything...... you can always go with the stock height - no need to have it lifted to have some fun with it.

as i understand it the fulltime 4wd xt6's had the 3.90 LSD...

found one in a local scrapper (2 miles from my house) they wanted $200 for it.. low mileage as well.. the XT6 was wrecked..

but i can't tell anyone where this yard is at cause that rear diff is goin in Junky (89' hatch)

Meeky, the 3.90 LSD was an option on the XT6 AWD and is probably the rarest Subaru part around.

Bugaru, the only thing you need to know about LSDs is that they are bad for you and you should send every one that you find to me for safe keeping. :D

hehe alright.. thanks for the correction..

well now i know its worth the $200 they want for it..

Dr.RX..Yes, in fact I have heard that LSD is bad for you, but I don't have any to give you, sorry.:(

The more I think about it, the better a welded diff sounds. A few minutes to "engage" it sure beats how long it takes to get unstuck. I really haven't decided yet though, I still might give the LSD a try.

GD.. I should have the engine swap done this weekend, so if all goes well I should be ready for MUD on Jan 24, and by the looks of the weather we wont have any trouble finding any.
