EJ Swap ?'s

Featured Replies

I have a 88 GL wagon 4 inch lift on 29's... other than that all stock motor is not in very good shape... looking to do a Ej swap dont know much about it?

Where to get a motor?

what do i need to change to put it in my car ( I think i need an adaptor for the high/low tanny?)

what else?

is the wiring hard to do?

any info will help

Thanks Reid

Well... There are some nice Written Threads about it, like This one:

You`ll need the Engine + the Wires Harness, ECU and Fuel Pump from a Donor Car, usually a Legacy`s EJ22.

to Fit that EJ engine on your Subie`s EA Engine`s Gearbox, you`ll need an Adaptor, Check the SJR website to obtain that Adaptor.

Could you post Pics of your Lifted Subie?

it's not a plug and play affair and the trans won't bolt up.

in general it's easiest to get a complete donor car. not hard to find a wreck or bad trans EJ vehicle and you got everything you need (minus the adapter plate). piecing together engine and trans swaps gets annoying.

did you search? the search function is great and answers most questions. there's an advanced tab and try to use 4 or more letter words. it doesn't really like 3 letter words although sometimes you can get them to work by using *. like say you want EJ2....you can search for EJ2* to make it 4...etc.

tons of folks have gone through write ups and threads about this swap. to ask them to spend more time writing about it is taxing the resources of very skilled and respected folks that have already put the information out there.

there's a very detailed write up in the USRM. i'm on dial up or i would point you to it.

read my thread and look at the pictures, im pretty much showing what is needed and what there is to do on a carbed 86 GL wagon, harder in some aspects and more work then your SPFI wagon.

you need to read the PDF file chux made under the retrofitting page.

you will need to ether fit a legacy rad or find a way to use a dual core turbo EA82 rad and fit hoses on it, adapter plate and redrilled flywheel which you can get from SJRlift.com, also you will need to send out your wiring to someone like chux to have it skinned down for the swap, also quite a few other things.

if i had the finished harness back from chux before i started then i would have been in under 1 day.

ok sounds good

thanks again for all the information!!!

i am going to start looking for a motor or whole car if you run across anything and would let me know that would be great :banana:

Thanks Reid

Look for a whole car, its easier, and to simplify even more, find a stick shift car, fwd or 4wd won't matter.

Kennedy engineering has a $35 "manual" that pretty much sums up the swap for putting it into a vannagon, 95% of the info is still very good, and is well worth the money if you decide to do the wiring yourself.

There is so much info on the swap that you could spend weeks looking and not read it all. Hardest part will be the wiring and the flywheel/spacer but the latter two parts are made by a few people on the board.

meh, I haven't seen kennedy's manual. but from the info on the site, it sounds like it's just a glorified FSM engine electrical diagram.

my write-up (about time for a revision....), '90-'94 legacy (ideal donor) engine wiring FSM pages, and some EA82 FSM pdfs linked here:

http://www.numbchuxconversions.com/downloads.htm

http://www.sjrlift.com is the place to go for adapter plates. wiring harness and flywheel both can be done yourself if you want, or you could pay to have them modified.

yes, buy a whole donor car. first gen legacies/early imprezas can be had for cheap. then you know more about the condition/history of the engine, and you know you have everything you'll need (I pieced together a swap....and wound up making a last-minute junkyard run for an ignitor....DOH. thank goodness the local yard had one!)

send me a PM if you are interested in a plug and play EJ18 ready swap, has 136K on it. came from a 93 Impreza.

the wiring is all done. plug in B+, Ign power, and starter wire (along with your gauges and such) and its good to go. i can even start it up on my grage floor for you if you want to see it run before buying it...

then all you will need is the adapter plate, and modify your flywheel...
