DaveT Posted February 1, 2009 Share Posted February 1, 2009 (edited) I'm not sure about the weird reving. 16V is too high. Check with a multimeter. back of alternator and battery. They normally should be close. If there is more than some tenths of a volt, check the electrical connections from the alternator to the battery. Should be the big wire on the back with a nut, not the little plug on ones. Looking for high resistance / burned contacts. Possibly one of the fusable links? My car wouldnt start in fact it wouldnt do anything at first and my mechanic told me to jiggle one of the fusible links. So replace that link and check for vacuum leaks? Davalos Posted February 2, 2009 Share Posted February 2, 2009 The voltage COULD be just the RPM revs, but the needle movement shoudn't be abrupt - it should be slow - if you have abrupt moves, you gotta look for shorts somewhere. Twitch de la Brat Posted February 3, 2009 Share Posted February 3, 2009 Well, as stated before, did you notice any difference in voltage after the fusible link change? If it fixes it, then there you go! If not check your voltage regulator, as stated before. If your voltage regulator is shot, then you'll have to replace it. I'm not sure, but I think that's onboard the alternator, and if it is it'll probably be easier (and cheaper ) to replace the alternator. Caramanos2000 Posted February 3, 2009 Author Share Posted February 3, 2009 Popped the Fusible link cover and removed all of them. They were all covered in green crap lol. WD-40 and a little screw driver to remove the gunk and some new fusible links solved all the problems with surging RPM and not starting.
