ej swap passed cal smog ref!

Featured Replies

Hey all:

I passed my inspection today at the smog ref!:banana::banana:

I have been super nervous about this because I have a general fear of bureaucracy and anything like it, but it went smoothly and the guy passed me on my first try!

I'm so psyched and now the Brat is officially legal! Thanks to the usmb for all the help with this swap. I know I finished it a while ago, but this was the final step.

So just out of curiosity was it referenced against a Legacy or a Brat? Or do the checks just have to be at a certain level depending on engine size over there?

My brat now has to pass smog as a 1993 subaru legacy. They noticed that my car was selectable 2wd or 4wd so I had to go on the dyno, but it still passed even with my 27" tires. An AWD vehicle only gets the sniffer up the tail pipe.

They put a sticker in the engine compartment that lists all the various smog components that are supposed to be on the 93 subaru, so future smog techs will know what to look for.

I've been worrying about this inspection since the day I decided to do the ej swap and I've been putting it off forever. I had to get a smog test by May 31 and figured I wouldn't pass on my first try so I made an appointment today and went in assuming they'd find something, but the ref was happy with my swap, I passed emissions, and they gave me my sticker. Yahoo!

WOW DUDE!!!! Super Gratz!!! This is one thing keeping me from biting the bullet. Since you passed, you win the opportunity to swap mine too!!!

Thanks Brian! You should go for it. Its really fun to drive a brat with power. You'll be able to pull it off. I'll be happy to help once you do decide to go for it.

Daniel

Great job Daniel.

see, it wasn't that bad huh?

Brian. COME TO THE EJ SIDE OF THE FENCE.... (in my ominous darth vader voice) and witness unlimited power.....

Take it from a dude who has 2 smog legal EJ swapped EA cars.

OBD1 is the route to go b/c there's less sensors. OBD2 is possible, but you will have to figure out how to get rid of the gas tank pressure sensor and a few other sensors plus the OBD2 diagnositic/smog plug.

If it's a new OBD2 motor like an 02 EJ20 you might be able to have someone disable to error codes on the ECU.

Hey Sko:

Thanks man. You were right it wasn't that bad. Thanks for all the help along the way.

It so freaking tempting you guys. My EA81 is old and tired, and everyday I curse the 73hp carburation.

But, something tells me I should focus my energy looking for a job, or something. But we'll see....

Yeah get that job first and then invite us over for dinner with your first paycheck... then we can talk about your swap. :)

Congratulations!!!

I know the feeling! (at least from a jersey perspective)

Rock on with your bad self! :headbang:

Hey Brian:

I suggest you buy yourself a bellhousing adapter. Hang it up in the garage and stare at it for a while. If you decide not to do the swap then sell it and get your money back, and otherwise, you can say you've started your swap and then we'll all chime in and motivate you to get it done. You have to spend some money, but if you get lucky and buy a whole car for the swap you can sell enough to pay for much of what you need. GO FOR IT.

Ok, get a job first I guess... but then go for it!

Daniel

Coincidental.

I just came in here looking to see if anyone has actually got an EJ swap past the state refs, and your thread was sitting right there on the front page.

Congratulations!

First try too!

Hmmm, now I just need to find a place to wrench in the east bay.

There are a couple of other ej swaps that are smog legal here in Cal., plus all the vw ej swaps out there. It can be pretty time consuming, but there is so much good info on the usmb that anyone who has the time and mechanical skills can pull this off. Good luck to you.

I wont be using an adapter for my swap. I want to use a Legacy or Impreza 5spd, weld the center diff and have a RWD EJ22 Brat :)

Alrighty then, if I see a deal on a donor candidate I'll let you know. I got my donor car right up by you for $350. I sold off enough stuff to pay for most of the swap.
