My question for ya h6 guys is how to do like the 6 cylinder?

How does the power compare to the stock WRX 4 cylinder?

 

I've been contemplating a new soob for a while and I'm seeing more of these h6s in alaska so I'm wondering if its just a fad, or if they are really good motors

I test drove an H6 when we were buying our H4 legacy...it was a bit smoother but the power didn't kick until high RPM's...it would only make a difference in extreme situations. If I wanted power I would go for the WRX sti...that is real power

Its nice to have an engine that doesn't have that 4-banger whine!! I've had to 2 Outback 4's previously and now the H6 and will NEVER go back!!

Are the H6-equipped cars noticably more nose-heavy than cars with the H4?

I very happy with my H6 in Australia heaps of power great in the wet .Ihave had some power rise as I have changed the air cleaner with a k&N replaceable unit it fit in side the box as the OEM unit ( here same as one of our GMH cars & 1/3 rd the cost .

 

I have from the off road guys that the timing chain is a problem if driven hard all the time .

212, i believe. 210 lb-ft of torque.

 

I don't understand why they even bothered making a new 6, with the variety of turbo-charged engines now available in the US.

So the outback is the only Subaru with the H6. I was kind of surprised that they put the 2.5t in the baja. The new legacy will also have that engine...

 

mmmm. 2005 Legacy GT. In a year or two I'll be able to buy a new car. It's going to come down to that and the STi.

I have two of the original H-6s. Much nicer engines as far as smoothness and power than any 4 cylinder Subie I've driven (and I've driven them all except any Gen 1s or earlier). Turbos are nice for somethings but also lack in the idea of power when you want it. Besides, turbos are dirty engines by their nature. The H-6 release far fewer pollutants into the atmosphere then the current batches of turbo.

I test drove a 2004 OBW last fall with the H6. While it was smoother and quieter than my 96 OBW 2.5, I found the power did not meet my expectations.

 

The 2005's will have the new H6 with variable valve timing, 245hp (I forget the torque number), and according to the sales people I've spoken to, it should have slightly better fuel economy.

 

Also, while there aren't a large number of H6 owners hanging around these forums providing opinions and feedback, it does appear that the H6 is much more trouble-free than the H4 2.5s. I have not seen one Head Gasket issue, and only one other on a different forum speak of an oil leak issue. That alone, to me, helps justify the added cost of an H6 over the H4.

i chime in with Benebob.. since he's got my old h6 powered car hehe.. i miss having that engien under the hood.. it was much more smoother, power was there when ya wanted it vs the turbo h4..

 

and emissions were better.. when i had that original h6 car smogged in oregon it was better than most new cars.. and that was with 140k, lol..

 

if i buy a new car it would either be a truck or a wagon.. if its a wagon it'll be an H6 outback.. no blowing headgaskets and all the other problems that the h4's have..

I already had the opportunity to test drive the new Legacy 3.0R Station Wagon with 245 hp (the torque is 290 NM)

 

Also drove the Outback H6 with 209 PS (here in Europe).

 

There are big differences between both engines. The H6 was a small disappointment concering power - but the smothness is high above the 2.5 H4. I guess that the automatic transmission destroys a lot of the power. But I would prefer the H6 over the H4 if I would buy again.

 

But now the 3.0R is available. Also with a 5 shift automatic. This is really a dream of an engine! It is so much improved over the "old" H6. For example - at first I felt that there is not "enough" power for what I was expectiong, but after checking the speedo and realizing that I was already cruising at 100 kmh - bang! Couldn't believe that. Really didn't hear the engine at 100 kmh (revs were appr. 2000 or lower, can't remember correctly). No vibrations could be felt.

After warming up a little bit I decided to let the pedal feel the metal. Wow - what a difference! Must be the AVCS that turns that smooth cat into a wild tiger! Lot's of pulling power and a sound like a sports car. Also testet the direct shift - it's like shifting without a clutch. So I wanted to see how the power delivery is compared to my 2.5 H4 Legacy and gave it full throttle at several gears and speeds. Heck there is a enough power for all of us that are not satisfied with the H4 but don't like turbos (errrr ... we don't have a Legacy Turbo here in Germany anymore ....gggrrrrrr). The engine, the transmission and the suspension are superior (compared to the current H6 Outback).

 

Only had the opportunity to drive the car at 160 kmh max (no time for autobahn driving...). But this was already enough testing for me. I would say that the 3.0R is a good piece faster than the '92 Legacy 2.0 DOHC Turbo with 200 PS that I owned some years ago.

 

The 3.0R can be driven very relaxed. But if needed, it can turn into a racer. (Sorry, but there is no button for chassis transforming during driving - I was missing that...)

 

 

Not to mention all the bells and whistles this model offers. Leather, electric seats for driver and co-driver, navi system (which offers some more infos during driving like mpg, acceleration and other stuff and could be programmed for inspection intervalls, oil changes ...), 17 inch alloys, VDC, and so on

 

Ok, should stop the advertisement now. I am NO employee of Subaru or any Subaru dealer ...

 

 

By the way, I fell in love with this car.

This love is so strong that I ordered a new Legacy 3.0R Station Wagon in atlantic blue last Saturday!

I had an H6 in an Xt once....it was very smooth. One thing that I don't like about the new gen H6 is the fact of no manual trans....that kills it right there for me...

Yeah, I think they should make the H6 available wiht a manual, not like they don't have a manual that will handle it (WRX or STi gearbox) now, I know the SVX wasn't available with a manual cuz they didn't have a manual at the time that would handle the HP... although a twin-turbo H6 STi would ROCK....

Can't imagine that there "big" sales of the 3.0R in Japan or Europe. This engine will be much more requested in the US.

To be honest I really don't think such an engine would help sales all that much. Sure you'll get a few more with it but the cost of that engine is outrageous (just like an SVX engine was/is). Really how many Americans are gonna shell out $35k for a Subaru??? 14k did for the SVX and most of those sold for WELL under invoice. I'd say there just gonna price themselves out of competition for the established base of Subaru buyers. Cheap, amazing reliability, economical and AWD are what Subaru has been about since they came here. Changing that now is a HUGE gamble.

I am not very into the US prices. But I guess they add it to the top of the line for people that love to blow out money (I saw one of those morons when taking a look in the mirror :eek: ).

 

For the other folks, there is still the 2.5 n/a version, which is (or should be ...) reliable, AWD equipped, ... and not too expensive.

 

And for the people between "cheap" and "expensive" there is the 2.5 GT !

 

I would be a little bit more happy when the 3.0R wouldn't be sooooooo expensive.

I have to pay more for it than in US. But I took the time to compare it with an Audi A4 (with Quattro), BMW 5 Series, and Mercedes E. Heck, the Subi is 8.000 - 10.000 EURO under the price of the mentioned cars (with comparable options, BMW and Benz without AWD!).

Ok, I don't have THE brand car, but I can handle that.

 

The 3.0R offers a good value for the money. This is a great car. Maybe not for everybody (but I like that).

 

Also the current H6 found his lovers and I guess the sales should be better than for the SVX.

There are good news for you!

 

The new 3.0R for the new Outback is confirmed. This engine has 250 HP at 6600 rpm (5 more than in Europe :argue: )

 

And it will have the 5-shift automatic (but without the shifting buttons at the steering wheel).
