EJ22 into 86 GL - ECU compatibility?

Featured Replies

Hello all - I'm pretty new to subarus...so bear with me please. I have an 86 GL (carbeurated, D/R 5 speed), and a wrecked 1990 Legacy with an EJ22. The legacy has 4 wheel discs, but is a 2wd auto. I want to put the EJ22 into the GL, and am interested in eventually doing a 5 lug swap/disc conversion also using parts from the Legacy. Will the fact that the Legacy is an auto, and i want to put the engine into a 5 spd. car give me problems? What needs to be done to address this? Specifically, is the ECU going to be troublesome?

Thanks!

I'm not a expert but there should be no problems. I run a auto ecu in my swap. No matter what ecu you have the wires going to the trany gets cut.

ECU is identical. there's a pin that tells it whether it's connected to an auto or manual, the configuration of this wire effects how it reacts to neutral switch signals. which is minimal.

don't worry about it, worst case scenario is pretty much just an extra check engine light code.

Sweet, thanks! That's good news...does anything need to be done with the neutral safety switch? Or with that wire in general? Or does it just get cut?

either way. cut it off, and it'll throw a CEL code. or hook it up to the sensor on the clutch pedal, and it won't.

I didn't notice a difference in how either EJ-swapped EA82 ran with or without that.

I've got an auto ecu and I run a 5sp in the brat. I didn't rig up a neutral switch and I havent gotten any code for it yet in 10k miles.

the 5 lug swap can't be done with legacy stuff in the rear, completely different set up. just look at them and you'll see why.

Ok...

What do you mean you just grounded it? You just grounded the switch to the body?

...Anyone looking for any rear disc stuff for a 90-94 Legacy? I guess the stuff I have is of no use to me!

I'll be happy to send it one I get it removed - you just have to pay shipping...for that matter, I have lots 'o parts. This car really only needs a new front drivers strut and fender to drive - I just want the EJ22/harness/ECU...the rest is up for grabs. If you're near Missoula, MT and want to take the carcass away...it's all yours.

"can't" isn't quite true. but it would be an enormous pain!!
