I saw some oil like substance around the base of this white cylinder looking filter. What is this white cylinder for? Is it supposed to have oil at the base?

Well it could be a bent hub. Never have seen one, but is possible. With wheels in the air has anyone run it so the wheels rotated and done a visual check nothing is rotating wobbly?1 point

USDM SOHC EJ22's there is (my tooth count could be off, but they're different): 1. 99-01 223 tooth belt, same as Phase II EJ25. and 2. 1998 and earlier 211 tooth belt If hes using a 2000 belt on a 96 engine as his post says then he's using the wrong SOHC belt1 point

heartless, Both my 2017 OutBack Premier and my Bride's 2019 Forester Limited have the oild filter up top. How much earlier than that I'm not sure, but my 2012 Outback Limited had the filter located on the bottom.1 point

when did they start mounting the oil filter like that?? holy cats, that is a dumb idea. Sure, it might be easier to get to, but the orientation is all wrong.1 point

Try a slight tightening of the oil filter. Just turn it by hand (clockwise). Don't force it. But if you can turn it a little, it may reseal.1 point

The rings are very high-tension, you won't need pliers. You will need a tapered-sleeve ring compressor (wiseco makes them). As you read - honing is a VERY bad idea. GD1 point
