How do you read codes on an EA82 carbed
Camelwagon replied to oldblue2's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ughgh I only have green connectors under the dash and 2 red and one white, no black or brown. Are the black or brown ones supposed to be next to the green ones? Man this is frustrating. -
Ok heres another freakin problem with my GL. When I first start it it doesnt want to run, idles bad and finally dies. So I always have to turn the idle up and then it will run half way descent. Then when it warms up the idle is too high so i gotta lower it. SUCH A PAIN. Whats up with it? Thanks guys.

hehe ok. Hey speaking of, do you know where the temp guage sending sensor is in the engine? My guage reads hot sometimes but i read that most of the time its either the guage or the sending sensor. Thanks. -

Hm in the Haynes Manual it just says that 7 long and 3 short just shows what the car is, 85 4x4 Cali. Maybe its just the default it shows on each car. -

Hey 85, ya i noticed at the junkyard, that the pic#4 nozzle is plugged on all of them so i plugged it on mine too. I tested the egr by putting a different vacuum hose to it and that opened it up all the time and thats how i did one of my emissons tests but it still didnt help so i just plugged the egr completely. Very weird. So is it the thermosensor on top of the thermostat that you're talking about? Doesnt that read the temp of the engine and goes to the temp gauge on the dash? On most cars thats what it does, not sure on this tho. I'll look around the sensor a bit more and see where the hose goes to. Thanks man... the ongoing dilema of our cars huh? -

Hey have you passed your emissions? Have you been able to read codes? I have the same prob now, my ECS light is on and I connected the 2 green things under the dash but its not showing any codes, only the 7 and 3 which means its a 4x4 Cali car. I had my car checked at an emissions specialist place and found what was causing my surging and sputtering and loosing power while driving, and also what was causing high HC's on my emissons. it was a hose in the back of the carb, i unplugged it and plugged the lines and wow what a difference. It actually has power now and smooth too. And the HC's were really low. I'll take a pic of the hose today, maybe its the same problem with yours too. I also unplugged my EGR too. It wasnt opening anyways unless i plugged it to a different vacuum line and then it would be open ALL the time. Anyways I just hope it runs ok now. Thanks. -

Ok so now my ECS light comes on when i drive, and wont go away, I checked the codes by connecting the 2 green connectors but it doesnt show any code, all it shows is a 7 and a 3, which means its a 4x4 Cali car... I'll try to clear it tomorrow. Very weird. Now maybe I know why it didnt have a bulb for the ECS slot. Thanks.

If theres someone out there with an 85 GL, can you look in your engine and tell me if these pics are like your engine or if I have it wrong? Thanks. -
Failed emissions - HELP
Camelwagon replied to Camelwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hm I heard if i have the EGR valve to be open all the time, that would maybe help pass... is this true? It wasn't opening at all when I did the test on it so I put a different vacuum line to it and now its open all the time and it still idles ok.... Thanks. -
So both green together? And how do i know what mode to be in, as in "test" or whatever other ones there were. And it wasnt quite clear how to clear them? Thanks.

Ya, thanks. Unfortunately I have to pass emissions so things kinda have to be connected right for the most part. Ughghg. -
I have an 85 GL wagon and in the engine bay near the windshield, there are no white single-pole connectors... so what do I have to connect to read codes? Thanks.

Lurching, shaking, sputtering
Camelwagon replied to Camelwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ya thats what we did, it wasnt opening at all at throttle, so we put a vacuum to it and opened it up all the time and it actually idled ok, thats what was weird. So i'm not sure if it was connected to the right hose before we put the vacuum to it. -
How do you do fuel pressure check? I have the gauge and all. Do you do it at the fuel pump? Have to disconnect fuel lines? Thanks.
