  1. Try doing what Snowman said and losen the bolts and see if you can move it by hand first. I would hate for you to bend or break anything if it's not needed. Best of luck.
  2. I thought I was the only one with this problem. But this problem let me buy my 92 Legacy for $150.00. Not that difficult to swap out the rusty for a solid crossmember either.
  3. I have been running Nokian Hakka tires for two seasons on my 92 Legacy and will never go back to a all season tire in the winter. There was a huge differance in all adverse weather conditions typical of northern Michigan. A much more secure feeling while driving at high speeds in slush, ice, and snow. I am sure the WR tires would be a good choice.
  4. I went with the 90\100 ultra blue bulbs from JC Whittney. The results even after running relays were unimpressive. Expect to see less and get brights from other people if you go with the blue ones.
  5. I am going to try a thicker oil during the warmer season and see if it helps.
  6. My 92 Legacy wagon (non turbo) 5sp has started making some noise during warm start-ups like when I go into the store for 5min and return and start it. Sounds like lifter or valve noise and goes away after I give it some gas or wait 5sec. It does not happen every time just when there is lots of people around! The engine has 197,000 mi. and I change the oil/filter every 3000 using 5W-30 and Lucas. I some times see 6000rpms (ok lots of times) so it has not had a easy life but all of my other Subarus can take it. Thank in advance for any help! You all rock:headbang:
  7. thanks for the info guys. heading out to the garage now that I have an idea where to look. It's nice to know that there is help when in need!
  8. Help! When the cooling fans turn on the engine idles rough and bounces between 200 and 1200 rpms. When they turn off the idle returns to it's normal 600-700 rpms. The car is a 92 Legacy 2.2 n/a 5sp. Other than this the car runs great with 189,000 miles. Any ideas as what would cause this?
  9. I am currently running 15in wheels off a 90 Chevy Cavalier and they work great. They also sit further out on the car and look better. I also know that some Dodge wheels will fit the Cavalier so maybe they will also work on Subaru 5 bolt cars.
  10. love the late 80s RX with all of the extras exclusive to that model. I curently drive a 87 3dr GL 4x4 on 15in pugs. closest thing I could find to the RX:) (but not quite. )
  11. thanks guys. you saved me lots of time! 21,000bps dial up= SLOW searching. :-\
  12. I am looking for info on a auto to 5sp legacy conversion. I currently have a 90 Legacy with awd and a auto trans (bad head gasket) and a 92 Legacy with awd and a 5sp parts car (bad rear rust damage). I saw the 92 for sale and the price was right ($150.00) lower miles, runs great and good drive train. So I figured it would be quicker and cheaper to do a engine swap than to do the head gaskets on my 90 at 200,000+ miles and possibly find more problems. I would like to replace the auto with the 5sp while the engine is out. Some of the things I am wondering are what will I need off the parts car besides the trans, pedals, clutch master cyl. and shifter? Also did any thing change between 90-92 2.2L engines that would prevent me from using my current ecm? Thank your help.
  13. I had the same problem with removing the crank pulley bolt. Just tried the starter method listed earlier in this post and all I can say is I wish all bolts could be removed this easy! (removing a rusted engine bolt from the drivers seat damn this is not work!)
  14. any one have any tips for removing the crank pulley bolt? I have tried using a impact wrench and a socket wrench with a breaker bar on the bolt with a open end wrench on the fly wheel to torque converter bolt to keep the engine from turning over. I keep snapping wrenches. If I keep this up Sears will ban me from returning broken tools! I am pulling the crank pulley to change the timing belts. Any tips for this first timer? I have a Chiltons manual but would like some ideas from fellow Subaru owners. Thanks for the help!!!
  15. sorry to hear about your loss. darn ford drivers anyway! Quite impressive that your Forester took out the truck. (built ford tough! ) Glad every one was ok. The results of the accident should help you feel good about your purchase of another fine automobile. Take care.
  16. I am in the same boat with pulling my first 2.2 auto legacy engine to do head gaskets. Thanks for the great tips. I have been told that you can pull the intake with all the hoses and wiring still connected and set it all to the drivers side of engine compartment any one against this time saving trick?
  17. I would go with a good set of driving lights with a relay (not fog lights) I had mine hooked up so they would turn on automaticly with the low beams. Like others have said they enhance the look of your car and the bulbs tend to last longer. By the way I know how you feel. My low beams were about = to holding a flashlight out the window! Best of luck.
  18. I use valvoline max life 10-30 with 1 quart of lucas along with a pure 1 filter. change about every 4000-5000 miles with good results. The lucas seems to help with oil life and lowering engine noise. All of my cars are driven very hard and this combo is one I like. In very cold locations this mix will rob you of a couple of ponies until the oil heats up but is worth the added protection if you drive hard. This is my personal opinion on the subject. Quaker State= Penziol= Castorol GTX or Valvoline= +Lucas= (sorry about the math crap)
  19. That sounds about right. My 87 auto is the same way. You will get use to it after a while. but you will always be dreaming about the dual range 5sp!
  20. I have a front hub assembly with rotor\caliper and cv shaft out of a 91 loyale 2wd auto trans. Will any or all of these parts fit on my 87 gl 4wd auto trans? Thanks for the help.
  21. I feel your pain! I curently have a 87 auto 4wd that gets about 20mpg on a good day. Also snapped a front cv shaft and thought I would remove it and drive it in 4wd or rwd for a while. What a joke! The car would hardly move (slipping rear clutch). My old 5sp dual range was driven like that for years=fun doughnuts. Damn I miss my real 4wd suby. Good news is the auto version seems to hold up to LOTS of abuse to. Sorry this isn't much help just giving my 2 cents.
