  1. search egr*, there are tons of threads. when reading one of them, scroll to the bottom of the page and there will be s list of simiular threads.
  2. initially the legacy was only available with the ej22 (i'm sure) and the impreza was only available with the ej18 (i think), US market of course. at some point the ej22 became an option and then standard for the impreza and they quit the ej18 altogether in the us, (but probably not in europe). and then of course the the ej25 was introduced and finally they phased out the ej22, around 2000? maybe. i wonder if the ej18 with a manual trans would be a good combo for a legacy.
  3. in my 97, i don't have a remote, but if i mess with the push button, the key and the door lock i can get it to stop. maybe you'll get lucky. what i can't figure out is how it gets in valet mode with out a remote.
  4. always bigger, always heavier. will this big legacy have the 2.5L engine? how much bigger is the tribeca? i was hoping the fuel price spike last year would get them to bring back the ej22. since the economy is in the crapper, do you think fuel prices will be kept low until it recovers?
  5. it's the ej18. it uses the same heads and timing belt as the ej22 and is almost identical. different pistons of course. very reliable, but less power. i wish i could put one in my outback, but it's too heavy. gas mileage should be good.
  6. would the cam shaft be suspect? obviously if the belt slips on that side you could get bent valves but i would have thought low compression, not no compression. what, if anything could the cam shaft do to cause this?
  7. that's what i was thinking, if they get old sitting in the box on the shelf, what chance do they have in the real world.
  8. i wonder how many months 'old rubber' is? do they age faster or slower mounted on the car?
  9. my 97 gt wagon has them, 97 obw limited does not. is the clock/ room fuse also the radio, do you have an after market radio? my 97 gt had a dead battery when i bought it since the bad HG caused it to not be driven. my guess is the alarm did it but i never figured it out.
  10. i bought a replacement steering rack boot for a toyota from advance auto, it came with a black plastic wiretie / ziptie. i guess there isn't as much wear and tear as on an axle.
  11. you're right, i'm comparing it to here, but what's the worst thing that can happen, the seller says no to 1800$. there are lots of 200k subarus out there. as for the LSi, i've never seen or driven one, but i find it hard to believe that 2 different sources show the 96 - 97 LSi as 2.5L and both are wrong. besides, the auto trans for the LSi is the TZ102Z2CAA which has the 4.44 final drive like the GT and outback. this final drive was only used with the 2.5 engine, never the 2.2L engine. the cars101 web site show the 2.2 as n/a for the LSi 96 - 97, not even an option. it also shows 97 as 'limited production'.
  12. i would try something else first. try locking and unlocking several times from the inside with the door closed. or look for a push button under the dash, press and hold with the key in each position. or i guess you have already tried using the remote. if i disconnect my battery, it reads that as a security issue and turns off my ignition. i'd like to disconnect mine since i don't have a remote, but unless i paid the dealer to do it i'm concerned that i'll disable my car altogether.
  13. i've been so hung up on the no 2.5L in the LSi that i've lost track of this thread. IMHO, 3000$ for 200k is too high, but that's just me. and i'll bet a dollar to a doughnut that the head gaskets have already been done. no way is it worth 3k$ with original head gaskets. question: if they blow now how many would repair and how many would 2.2 swap? is the 2.5 worth putting new gaskets on at 200k? and the other one isn't much better. some one recently commented that the wiggle room on dealer used cars was 40%, so if you really want that red car, i'd offer 1800$ and go from there. or buy another legacy for 2000$ and then spend 1000$ on red paint and GT wheels. and finally, both cars have the 2.5L engine, unless a swap was done, according to http://www.cars101.com/subaru_legacy_archive95_97.html#1996%20legacy%20specs/colors . the 96 LSi was not available with a 2.2L engine, 2.5L engine and auto trans was standard.
  14. it sounds a whole lot like a bad HG. i would want to rule out a clogged radiator as well. is there any gunk in the over flow bottle, when it runs hot are there bubbles in the overflow? assuming the HG repair price is very similar to a 2.5L repair, you might look for a replacement engine.
  15. there is a great picture/diagram of how the knock sensor should be installed but i couldn't find it. someone should point you to that thread. it's all about the proper alignment / angle. as far as the 'bad' cylinder goes, i can't say it does not happen but it is rare. i'd bet against it. address the knock sensor first then with no codes attack what's left, if anything.. a compression test can tell you a lot.
  16. just keep an eye on it, like you could avoid looking at now that you're worried. try and look at the road every now and then. HG leaks in the early stages are very subtle and fickle. seems fine and then hot....... if it overheats, stop driving. let it cool down, maybe carry some coolant.
  17. i think the 96 LSi is a 2.5L engine, like the GT. and i think the LS is a 2.2L. but i could be wrong, it's happened before, just the other day. http://opposedforces.com/parts/info/10100AU080/ LEGACY B11 Usage information Date Body Engine Train Transmission Grade Suspension '95, June — '98, May SEDAN 2500CC EMPI DOHC NA FULLTIME 4WD Automatic transmission GT Normal suspension '95, June — '97, April SEDAN 2500CC EMPI DOHC NA FULLTIME 4WD Automatic transmission LS-I Normal suspension '98, June — SEDAN 2500CC EMPI DOHC NA FULLTIME 4WD Automatic transmission GT Normal suspension '95, June — '98, May WAGON (Middle-high roof) 2500CC EMPI DOHC NA FULLTIME 4WD Automatic transmission GT Normal suspension '95, June — '97, April WAGON (Middle-high roof) 2500CC EMPI DOHC NA FULLTIME 4WD Automatic transmission LS-I Normal suspension '98, June — WAGON (Middle-high roof) 2500CC EMPI DOHC NA FULLTIME 4WD Automatic transmission GT Normal suspension '95, June — '98, May WAGON (Step roof) 2500CC EMPI DOHC NA FULLTIME 4WD Automatic transmission OUTBACK Normal suspension '98, June — WAGON (Step roof) 2500CC EMPI DOHC NA FULLTIME 4WD Automatic transmission OUTBACK Normal suspension
  18. if you get one with out an egr trade with grossgary, that's just what he's looking for.
  19. i think 96 LSi is a 2.5L engine with the matching 4.44 final drive if it's auto, or 4.11 for manual. you might double check if it's a manual, i'm sure about the auto.
  20. i knew there was something wierd about 97 - 98. i edited above to not send out bad info. that opposed forces website shows only a/t with egr 97 - 98. it also reffers to "destination codes: C0, U0, U1, UT", any idea what that means.
  21. maybe call your wife or the parts store guy and get the part number to cross check. location mat not matter if they gave her the other sensor. the shop installed the part supplied. it appears they are right next to each other, passenger side, under the intake, threaded in to the coolant pipe that goes forward to the top radiator hose. the one you want is closer to the middle, item #1 below, the outside one is for the instrument cluster gage, item #4 below. the gage sensor has only one wire ( pics from advance auto parts) gage sensor coolant temp sensor part numbers can be found here: http://opposedforces.com/parts/legacy/us_b11/type_25/cooling_system/water_pipe_1/
