It is actually being done on alot of other makes as well. It is just a spacer really that kind of sheilds the D/S O2 from the exhaust stream. When mounted the vanes of the thimble on the O2 that sample the exhaust gases are almost covered, it fools the ECU into thinking that the cat is doing its job.

Is this a 2.2? or a 2.5? Either way I could see how you were told this is a one year only deal. The 99 Legos got a 2.2 phase 2 setup that was only used in the 99 Leg and the 99-01 impreza, they are a little rough to come by. If you can't get one I have access to one. If it is a 2.5 it could be called a one year setup because they went to the more bolt bell, but you can still use the older 2.5 engines.

A spark plug non fouler is basically a spacer used for cars that burn oil. It would normally thread on in between the spark plug and the head and has a small hole in the end to allow the spark to ignite the A/F mixture, but keeps the spark plug out of the combustion chamber. When using it on the O2 it sheilds the little vanes on the O2 from the exhaust and fools the ECU. I beleive the correct part number from motormite (Help products) is 42008 or something close to that.

On the original topic. The CEL is flashing due to the missfire, this is probably going to be a tune up issue. I would check the plugs and wires and only replace with OE stuff. I would do the front O2 sensor before trying to address the 420 code. Once all of this is done erase the codes and drive it to see what pops back up. The moniters for Subys are way to picky for catalyst insuff. If the 420 comes back on get yourself a ong 18mm spark plug non fouler and drill out the center with a half inch bit and put it on between your downstream O2 and the pipe. I am running that setup on my 96 OB with no cat and no CEL!!

Magnaflow sounds awesome on a suby!!!!! After doing my 2.2-> 2.5 DOHC swap on my 96 Outback I hung a borla un-el header with a universal Magnaflow and the rumble is perfect, and man is it a low tone. I found it too quiet with the 2nd cat on so it got gutted. The one thing nice about their mufflers is that you don't get the drone running on the highway so its not annoying. I would highly recomend this brand for a Suby. On my RS I had a highflow cat with a Borla header and a Greddy cat back and the Mag. beats the sound hands down.

If you are after a straight drop in you will be able to use any 00-02 lego long block. the 96-99s were dohc and the 03 and later engines started EGR again. I have used Impreza/Forester motors as direct drop in but they call for a diff timing belt. If you are building your own you can really use any EJ25 shortblock. If you go to a 96-99 shortblock you will loose a little compression and in 96-98 a couple of bell bolts.

It shouldn't be hard for those years. The module just plugs in. If you are swapping the wiring they both should have the wiring that runs jumpers into the drivers front door and all of the wiring is in plain sight.Did the car that you are installing into orig. have keyless? In 96 and 97 the systems kind of seemed like an afterthought the way they were installed and wired. Kind of funny you asked this when I just had to cut a harness out of a 96 Outback to replace the hacked harness that was in my car.

Your best bet would just be get some 96-99 Outback take offs. This is the change it made on my 92. I just sold the 92 to my friend that owns Area1320 and we are going to bring both of them in the shop and start fabbing a lift. If it works out nicely enough we would probably make more to sell at a FAR better price than we have seen for these.

I wound up running the General Grabber AT 2s in a 205/75-15. I now picked up a cheapy 212,xxx mile 96 OB with a 2.2 5 speed for $600 now it is time for that one

Ok, I was heading out to the garage to put my hybrid 2.5 phase 2 block with phase 1 EJ22 dual port heads together. I started looking at what exactly I would have to do to the head gasket to make it work. Came back in and jumped on to see what other people have done to make them work. I found some threads that I haven't seen before mentioning after the hybrid build it didnt seem any faster than a normal phase 1 25. So from peoples experience and research what should I do? I have a 2.5 phase 1 block, a low mileage phase 2 block, phase 1 EJ 25 heads and phase 1 EJ22 heads. If there isn't much diff between the hybrid and the dual cam power wise I will probably just throw the phase 2 block in with the dual cam heads to avoid as high octane and adjusting coolant passages in the gasket. Also if it is leaning more toward the Hybrid build, are there any good threads on HG modification floatin around? And for other info on the setup it is a 96 Lego O/B 2.2 5 Speed. I will be running an EL header w/test pipe, perrin pulley, and have 2.25 bent for after the test pipe. It is an on road off road toy lifted 4 inches with mudders on it.

Why not replace the whole axles? If you know anyone that has a commercial account with somewhere like Advance Auto you can get them for $40ea with a lifetime warranty. Or try to find the newer style (00 and up) and just knock off the tone ring on the outboard joint. The newer boots have more convolutions and they don't tear all of the time like the older ones. Just my 2 cents.
