  1. Thanks for the feedback! I think I will start with the oil pump. I have 6 cars and it's not driven alot and it has, at the most, had 10- 15 starts this way. I think until I replace the pump.....I'll flood it a sec to prevent it from starting right away and let it crank the oil pump a bit first. (Heck, this might be an excuse to put in one of my 3 spare engines) Todd
  2. There's an example of that rule working against us. I will email her and get the information. Todd
  3. For that matter, how about a nice 1979 wagon or BRAT???? How would that have to change to bring up to todays standards!! I'd buy it! Todd
  4. Using the Purolater equivilent of the Subaru filter....NOT EVER A FRAM!! LOL Todd
  5. Looking forward to the pics! (Gosh I love those Gen 1s)
  6. Gosh, I hope it's not the mains! But in a 4 speed BRAT, it does rev higher/more wear. So could it be the oil pump being weak?
  7. One of my gen 1s has been doing this knock on start up. (Knock always stops, EXACTLY when the oil pressure light goes out) Oil pressure light stays on longer now. Longer than any of my other gen 1s. I could understand if the vehicle had been sitting a week , but 2- 3 hours and it does it again. The knock lasts about 2-3 sec. No issues with the engine at all. Runs fine/plenty of oil, (mobil one for the last 30K) Is this the oil pump starting to fail? Is something leaking down and not primed on startup?? o-ring?? Should I just change the pump and see if that makes a difference? Ideas would be appreciated.
  8. "Email me for details on the Alleyboy "farmer" paint system, if anyone is interested" I'm interested!! email me subaru3@aol.com Thanks! Todd
  9. Wow! Interesting stories. My history with them was never that bad, but I was always "popping in" (Multiple-times daily) Now the paint I had applied on 2 cars is still fine. (Done in 1994 and 1995) I guess every location is different with no consistency between shops. I think I'll look around.
  10. I used MAACO some years ago for some paint work and was rather satisfied. (Of course I had the car stripped of all the things that would unbolt, unstick or un fasten!) Anybody with recent MAACO experience or suggestions??? Todd
  11. Man...that looks nice!!! I'm going to do that to my 80 BRAT and 95 Impreza. Todd
  12. Sounds like the freeze plug caps blew in the cylinder head. Todd
  13. Maybe we could develop a "flag" , that we could check on posting to indicate that the thread is Gen 1 or earlier related!! Todd
  14. Here are my Gen 1 mileages: (All electronic ignition) Mixed city/hwy 79 DL wagon 5speed 34 79 GF 5 speed 35-36 79 wagon automatic 25 (Just installed electronic ignition last night, it may improve) 80 BRAT 4 speed 28-30 (Strictly highway mileage in the GF recently was 41) I use mobil1 in all the cars!! It made a difference
  15. Worked like a dream!! EASY!! and yes, the timing was able to be done like always. I'm happy now ALL my Gen 1's are electronic!! Paul, is your 78 wagon electronic? Todd
  16. This sensor was part of a recall by Subaru on the 95's. Check your VIN with the dealer, It may be covered. My 95 2.2 AWD had the recall. Todd
  17. What is the difference between the Hitachi distributor and the Nippondenso distributor for 83 and up cars. Both have 2 wires only to the coil and the electronic boxes under the cap. I think the 4WD and the automatics had the Hitachi and the 2WDs/manuals had the Nippon?? (Is this a true statement?) Am I going to be able to time my EA 71 after this switch? Thanks!
  18. And obviously I'm VERY interested in a Vintage forum for Pre-81 BRATs and up to 1979 on all others. Let's do it!!
  19. Yep, the GF was the only hardttop. (GF in my picture above) Soon to have louvers!! Whoo who~! Subaru had the 2 door "sedan", the 2 door "coupe" and the 2 door "hardtop/GF" in the 70s. Todd
  20. The GF was a hardtop and the "top of the line". (It was not a coupe, like the FE) It was offered in stage 1 version from 75-77 and stage 2 from 78-79. It had all the bells and whistles. The FE was not a hardtop. It was a coupe and was offered in 78 and 79. It was just a basic coupe with a few mods to give it better MPG. And yes it had FE on the trunklid. Here's a pic of mine.
  21. It's easy. The older version flywheel cover/ rear cover interchanges to ALL EA-71s. So does the intake. Just take the JDM down to the long block and rebuild with your stuff. I've done many! Todd
  22. A good 1978/79 EA71 intake, with clean EGR port and good threads for the pipe too. Let me know. Todd
  23. Don't confuse "dual range" with 4WD/FWD. The 81 Dual range had 4wd HI and 4wd LOW and FWD on the selector. You you could call it "triple range". The pics indicate just regular 4WD. Todd
