  1. been awhile since i've had an old scooby but i find myself in need of reliable cheap wheels.. and i am falling back on old scoobies since i know them so well.. anyways, i will prolly pick up an 84 gl wagon, spotless inside and out with the exception of the dash.. interior has been redone original, power windows, power mirrors, a/c, power steering, its loaded for an old wagon.. only down side is its an auto.. other good stuff is everything has been repaired and resealed, runs like a new car.. body is straight, no dents, 100% rust free too..
  2. my other car is an old 87' pathfinder, which odly i like driving more than my scooby, but even though the hg's are going and i'm pulling the engine in the scooby, i have no thoughts of getting rid of it cause its too reliable/maintenance free in comparison to other vehicles i've had..
  3. that was kinda my concern with the project, new cams would stretch the budget... what would you recommend for clutch? 2.2 or 2.5?
  4. so my legacy is letting a HG go.. only reason i say so it my overflow tank is filling up and its got carbon buildup in with it.. and i get air bubbles rushing through the heatercore everyday.. this is a 91' 2.2 legacy with only 104k its never overheated yet, but its going to get pulled before it does so. i can get a 2.5 shortblock reasonable, just debating on it really.. i already have dual port heads and a tsudo uel header. will franken motor run ok with stock 2.2 cams? i'm kinda on a budget too, hence the hesitation to jump on it.. nothing wrong with my 2.2 shortblock. ideas, suggestions, comments?
  5. i've had and built more scoobies than i can count ea81, ea82, ej cars, outbacks, svx's, rx's, u name it.. been there done that, lol..
  6. yes i towed it about 20 miles... rx wagon it was fun... built from 5 cars..
  7. ohh and i came across this odd little hatch once upon a time 87' ea81 4wd hatchback odd grille and headlight setup.. only one i have ever seen... and check out this dash.. even rarer i think, lol.. basic functionality and just to prove it was an 87'
  8. German 14" EA82 alloy wheels. i bought these and had them shipped from germany. took a long time and cost alot, but they were sweet. only set in the US and they are floating around here somewhere.. they were genuine subaru wheels:banana:
  9. i'm late but i used to tow all kinds of stuff with my wagon, definitely exceeding the weight limit. from richmond to charlottesville, 70mph down the freeway no issues.. i just started out in 4low and went to 2h after 3rd gear.. it was easier on teh car.. and there was almost no tongue weight with the dolly..
  10. i started this thread in 2005.. lol i see it was ressurected.. anyways, to followup after all these years.. the 2.2 droped right in, didn't changed anything. no check engine light, nothing, ran like a top.. was still running 3 years later last i saw it..
  11. you have to be careful with the blue book, the ea81 hatchback was made from 82-89. the ea82 hatchback was made from 85-89. All ea81 cars were stopped in 84' except for the hatchback and brat. There is a HUGE difference in the cars.
  12. nope, left the wheel bearing alone.. grease was still clean and soft, no play etc. car only has 103k.. the ball joint came out of the hub assembly like it was new, it wasn't even stuck like 99% are in cars this old..
  13. just a follow up, put a reman axle in it this morning, went for a drive, made a few circles in both directions in the walmart parking lot with the studded snow tires on, absolutely no torque bind at all...
  14. turbo gaskets, exhaust gaskets, intake gaskets, cam and crank seals, oil pump seals, rear main seal, head gasket set, valve cover gaskets. don't use the cork for the oil pan, use RTV ultra black or grey or Fujibond. new thermostat and gasket. new timing belt. that"s about it for gaskets.. you'll want to replace various hoses while you have it out too.. i would replace things like spark plugs, wires, cap rotor, etc. if they need it since its coming out anyways.. i rather do it all at once then have to work on it later.
  15. actually they aren't locked permanently believe me it still slips like its supposed to... just saying that it didn't slip in the higher gears.. i doubt its going to have any issues at all actually.. we'll see when i get an axle in it..
  16. so we went out today to get a christmas tree.. up in the mountains 65 miles from home.. in a foot of snow.. after a couple hours of driving through the snow lookin for a tree.. we come across an old quarry.. i decided it would be fun to burn a donut in the powder.. i burned the donut, and shredded the cv axle outer cage on the pass side. bearings and all went flying out.. the boot was already ripped and an original axle with 103k on it, it was bound to go anyways i'm sure.. so the car was stuck at that point, got it pulled out to the main road.. drove it home 65 miles after we drove another 30 min or so to get our tree.. it rattles horribly, there is nothing left of it.. it just spins in the cup, lol.. i woulda pulled it off completely but i didn't have anything to punch the pin our with. first and second gear, the center diff doesn't like it.. once your in 3rd or higher the center diff doesn't slip and the car drive like normal.. luckliy it was mostly freway to get home so 65 miles at 65 miles an hour with the cruise control set and a dead front axle.. tough scoobies love'em (its parked until i get a new axle tho, not trying to burn it up) least it got all 5 of us home:)
  17. so i don't think i'll be bringin my car by lol.. the center diff doesn't like not having an axle in the front.. gotta wait till wed to get a new axle..
  18. hmm, so no spark and no injector pulse, but everything else is good.. jeeps do that when the crank sensor is bad.. about the only free time i have this weekend is sunday around 5 in the afternoon.. gonna be gone today gettin a xmas tree...
  19. i put a cheap one $14 ebay sensor in my legacy, works fine.. its one of those things that either works or it don't. theres no in between with them..
  20. if the fule pump is working and its getting spark, just no injector pulse i would point my finder towards teh ECU a well, especially if the cel doesn't work.. could always pull mine out and plug it in to your car to test..
  21. does it come with a few cases of oil ? yes i read that post.. i have to pull the intake bolts one at a time and seal them with RTV to keep the oil from pooling on my brand new intake (its a chevy thing) in the process now of replacing the entire brake system (its shot and was leaking brake fluid all over. then it needs all the ball joints, tie rod ends, and front axle ujoints and seals. (this is the expensive part cause i don't have a press for the ball joints, and the tie rods are siezed in the big steering bar.. and it needs front pads.. i knew i hated gm products for a reason... love my scooby..
  22. i might be interested, my truck is going to be parked for awhile and i need some cheap wheels.. workin on it is no problem.. is it the white one on your street right before you get to 7th on the right side always parked behind that jeep?
