I ran a search but I couldnt find a post exactly like this. I have a 92 Legacy Wagon AWD automatic, 245k miles but runs and shifts great... I noticed on the icy roads the past couple days that from a stop my front wheels slip for about a second or two, then you can feel the rear grab and it takes off fine. I was under the impression this is supposed to happen much faster when the front wheels slip, as in almost unnoticeable? I found info on binding, 50/50 AWD all the time, FWD all the time, but my Legacy has none of these issues... anyone have the same problem or know how to fix this?

Why subaru's are retired...
danbennett2u replied to zyewdall's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I got my 87 wagon with a blown engine for 200 bucks. Put a 84 EA81 into it that supposedly had 100k miles ran great for 10k miles, then broke a rod. Gave it away as I needed it gone before the Police towed it and charged me for it. I miss it -
Well, it is dead now.. made it about half the way home and the noise got louder all of a sudden then blew the rest of the way, trailing smoke and smelling of antifreze. How frustrating to replace an engine to only get 10,000 miles out of the replacement Anyway looks like you were right GD... seems like a broken rod to me, and the engine is now frozen.

Ok, Thanks for the suggestions/info... I am likely going to try to drive it the 20 miles back home tonight. I probably won't have time to check it out much but I will post in the AM what happens.

oh, that really sucks... if it is a broken rod it looks like Roo may become a parts car already replaced one engine, not sure I have the time or drive to put another one in
-
Positive, I bought the car with a locked up ea-82 and swapped the ea81 into it

I was accelerating on the highway this morning at 3am to get to my newspaper rack route and something broke It lost some power and started making a "tinking" noise, that rose and dropped with engine rpm, although it sounded loose so that when decelerating the noise was not an even beat.... I pulled over and oil looked good, and I wasnt leaking anything yet. The noise sounded like a hammer hitting metal when idling: tank...tank...tank...tank I didnt have much option to keep going, so I drove from longmont to boulder at 55mph (about 15 miles?) and ran the car on a delivery route for about 2 hours...and it still runs. No smoke... but it is very noisy with all the bashing around and idles poorly, but will rev fairly smoothly, although with the noise I didnt let it go above 3500 rpm. My guess is something in the valvetrain, any opinions? I am honestly just happy it didnt strand me.

Doctors, how long do I have?
danbennett2u replied to danbennett2u's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sorry, I had to take them while the car was on the ground and with my cell phone. that is good to hear that my car isnt going to break in half soon. -
This is a rust hole on the "frame" rail just rear of where it curves up by the front driver side wheel. These are both of the same spot, just different angles. The other side dosent have any rust. I use this car for commute and a 30 mile per day bulk rack newspaper route. I live in CO so they dont salt the roads, should I be very worried about this?

HVAC control question
danbennett2u replied to danbennett2u's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I tried it and they work fine and quickly without it... I was worried that maybe there would be too much vacuum -
Will I hurt anything by running my heater controls vacuum directly to a manifold nozzle? It originally had some gizmos in between but all the hoses got all mucked up... This is an 87 gl wagon, with an EA81 transplanted in.

Power steering noise when clutch is in?
danbennett2u replied to danbennett2u's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I dont think it is the throwout bearing, as I dont hear the same noise outside the vehicle... I will definately check the boot, tha may be it.. -
Hi, My car is an 87 GL 4x4 with an EA-81 swapped into it. I have decided that I would like to try the carb off of the original 87 ea82 engine on my ea81 engine ( which is an 84 model solid lifter off of a 2wd vehicle ).. I am doing this because I feel that my engine is running rich, smells really gassy and I am only getting around 20mpg... and occasionally the engine dies after letting off the gas pedal and stepping on the clutch, even though it will idle steady at anything over 800rpm. I want to know if much had changed between the two hitachi carbs, and if I will gain or lose any power, economy? I know I am going to get replys saying Weber but I have zero budget and wanted to try out the carb I already have laying around. (unless someone wants to donate a weber ) Anyone able to tell me what if any differences I will notice?

I picked up a pair of these at a thrift store for 8 bucks each, they are nice heavy duty rubber and cover 95% of my floor very nicely. I thought I would let others know, as I think the offroad crowd might like them as they do seem that they will keep dirt/mud/snow off of the carpets very well. They dont slip and dont stick up in weird places so far. This auction is a bit pricey but if you see any 90's Jetta's in the yards I reccomend grabbing them if the price is right http://cgi.ebay.com/VW-VOLKSWAGEN-JETTA-RUBBER-FLOOR-MATS_W0QQitemZ270022871364QQihZ017QQcategoryZ33697QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Is there such thing? I see a red coupe here at work that says RS turbo on the sides... I know of a RX but not heard of an RS.

Have been driving our 87 GL 4X4 with a EA81 stuck in it for awhile now and would like to share my experiences for anyone doing it. First, the grinding of the bellhousing to fit the EA82 flywheel was easy... aparently the EA81 I got was a 2wd engine, and supposedly the ea81 4x4 engine's flywheel fits the EA-82 clutch, but that was not my case. No big deal there though. Engine pretty much dropped on, kept the ea81 manifold and carb, and blocked off/removed all of the emissions stuff except the pcv connections. Timing was not optimal, but I dont have a light so I just did trial and error until the powerband felt most balanced. So far working on getting the Power steering hooked up. The engine is torquey but have not driven an EA82 in working shape so I do not know how that part compares. Getting up over 60 takes a bit of effort from the older engine, the timing settings seemed to help that, but fastest I have had it is 80, took a long time and dont think it will go much faster. Acceleration will keep up with traffic, but wont beat anything. I put alloys on with some 175/70/r13 tires versus the wagon wheels with 185's and it seemed more responsive, I am sure any weight savings will help out with the loss of hp. I like the sound of the exhaust between 3k and 4k. I get mid 20's for gas mileage and I am using the car as a newspaper delivery vehicle, so pretty happy with that number. Oil pressure reads low, not sure if it is the pump or the gauge. Voltage reads below 8 at times, this may be the gauge though as it happens with 2 different alternators. Oh, and I put in GL-10 seats from a junkyard ($50 for both) and they were much better feeling than the ones that were in it
-
This is regarding the high pressure hose... I am having trouble finding a place that can get this to work... I have both hoses, but nobody seems to be able to join them so I have ea-81 pump connnection and a ea-82 rack connection on one hose. Any suggestions? I am in northern colorado if anyone has any first hand experience with a shop that can do this. Thanks, Dan

Hi, I am going to go the cheap route and just get some used hubs instead of replacing the bearings. I need to know if there are any differences between the d/r hubs on my 87 and hubs off of the push button loyales?

need suspension help!
danbennett2u replied to danbennett2u's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I didnt see anything obvious under there, there was som play when moving the wheel side to side with my hand. My feeling is bearings but I do not know much about suspension issues. I appreciate the suggestions. -Dan -
Hi, My 87 5spd/r wagon has been grinding for few weeks (since the ea81 swap, did not drive the car prior to buying it, the ea82 was frozen). It has started making popping noises now whenever the front end lifts, such as when under acceleration or on speed bumps. I can also get it to make this noise if I saw the steering wheel back and forth aggressively while moving slowly. The grinding comes from the front wheels, it is okwhen going straight, but makes a grr, grr, grr noise if I take corners. The speed of this increases and decreases with speed of vehicle, but seems to be much slower than the speed of the wheels. Any ideas on where to start with these?
