  1. Wow, i was just going to post about this issue, I just started driving my 87 GL wagon after doing an ea81 swap in, and noticed the same thing. Going straight it is fine ; taking corners makes it go "grr grr grr grr" and you can feel it through the steering wheel and brakes. I know the brakes are shot on the car so I will check those. I am hoping the axle nuts are just not as tight as they should be. I will let you guys know what it ends up being, I am hoping it isnt toasted bearings though
  2. Is there any reason this would fit a 90 manual but not an 87 manual? This radiator will fit the following model(s): 1985-1989 Subaru Gl/ Gf/ Dl/ Fe/ Rx/ Glf L4 1.8 Liter Engine Automatic Transmission 1990 Subaru Loyale H4 1.8 Liter Engine Manual Transmission Core measures 25.375" x 12.875" x 0.75"
  3. It does seem to happen at speeds above 70, but it is not constantly there. I have not noticed much of a difference in pitch but after about 75 it is not as noticeable. You can feel it through the steering just a bit but it is not a very strong vibration at all. The brakes do drag a bit, and since they make noise when at low speed I cannot really tell if the wheel bearings are going bad. I am probably going to replace the pads and hardware soon, are the bearings easy enough to do while I am in there to just do as a preventative measure?
  4. Hi, we recently bought a 92 Legacy AWD with high mileage in excellent condition. The only problem I have noticed is at around 70mph there seems to be a humming noise from the front end. It isnt really loud, but is noticeable. I believe that the transmission (automatic) has been replaced but I do not have any records. Is this a sign of tranny failure, cv joint failure, wheel bearing issue, etc? This is a very nice well maintained vehicle so I want to keep it but am a little worried about the noise. I have not noticed any difference in the sound when stepping on the brakes, and it is the same when accelerating or decelerating. I cannot test if cornering affects it as it only does it at 70+mph. Any ideas?
  5. Hi, this may seem like a dumb question, but are there labels inside the car indicating that it is awd or are the AWD and FWD interiors identical. I ask because I now have one in my driveway that the exterior badges are gone, and I havent gotten the chance to crawl underneath yet.
  6. Thanks for the offers everyone, I got something figured out and didnt need the help after all. I appreciate everything though!
  7. Erik, I might take you up on the offer, I will let you know if I cant figure anything else out.
  8. Hi everyone, Long story short... We bought a gl wagon with intentions of replacing the engine in order to learn about the car, but my father in law wants it out of his shop now and started doing it all himself . I am trying to rent a truck and dolly but aparently uhaul is not allowing rental of both at same time :-\ . Anyway, I thought I would throw out here to see if anyone with a truck and trailer would be willing and able to help me move the car and engine(s) from his place to mine (about 10 miles)? I am looking to do this tomorrow around 4 and could throw in a little cash for the trouble? Thanks
  9. Cool, This is exactly what I am about to attempt! Please post if you have any issues. My ea81 engine is complete with all accessories so mine might go a bit different, but it is nice to have someone doing it at the same time!
  10. That is true, rust is a killer out east, used to live in MI, salt pretty much eats them for lunch.
  11. I take it you arent where your profile says? How much was the ea81? It was gone by the time I got there.
  12. Well actually, that other one isnt mine, the pic was sent to me before I bought it. Nice thing is since the ea81 engine I bought was very complete, I will have alot of spare parts that are good off of the blown ea82. Hopefully I wont have to make too many trips to the junkyards.
  13. Just thought I would try posting a pic, this is the one I bought off of craigslist with a locked up engine, that is getting a 100k mile ea81 put into it. Found some H alloys (also on craigslist) for it, and am going to use the alloys for summer driving, and am going to try to clean up the rusty wagon wheels to use with winter tires. total investment so far with car, engine, and wheels: $420 Sorry if I am being annoying, by posting with nothing really to say, I am just happy about having a subaru!
  14. When I was looking I drove an 84 wagon with 252k miles, the engine was in good shape, rest of the car was not. I know that kind of mileage isnt unusual with these cars.
  15. Thanks, I will take a look again, I didnt notice anything real obvious earlier but I guess it dosent matter if I break the engine, it is beyond repair anyway as it is.
  16. Since I have never pulled an engine, I am looking for some expert advice.... What is the best way to attach the engine to a cherrypicker? Is there a place that would be safe to attach clips to the top, or will I have to run chains underneath? If chains underneath, do I need to run two underneath or is there a way to run one so it will work safely and be somewhat balanced? I am worried I am going to damage something if I dont do this right. Thanks - Dan
  17. To me that looks mostly cosmetic, I would say it depends on the condition of the interior and mileage, etc.. I looked at an 84 for 400 bucks that was pretty trashed compared to that. Maybe the demand is different in CA than it is in the Denver/Boulder area.
  18. Update: unhooked a bunch of stuff to get engine ready for pull, and hmm, no antifreeze from the radiator hoses. Drained the "oil" about a cup of oil came out, then lots of fresh bright green antifreeze... I know this can be from broken block/heads, but there was a whole lot in there. I am wondering if someone along the lines thought the oil fil was for the radiator... looks like it except it says "ENGINE OIL" on top of it. Jeez no wonder the engine is toast
  19. yep, was the one on C/L that was run without oil... rest of the car is in decent shape so I figured I would tackle a engine swap. I found an ea81 in westminster with 100k miles on ebay and the seller said he would do local pickup. I guess the guy he got it from destroyed the suspension on a curb that last snowstorm we got. I dont think it will be too bad of a swap, 84 carbed into an 87 carbed, both manuals. I will definately be asking for help on here if we get stuck on the swap.
  20. From what I have seen on here a bad O2 sensor affects gas mileage pretty bad on subarus.
  21. Awesome, thanks, I didnt think to look in off roading forum.
