Hey man, don't disrespect Subaru's disowned 3 cylinder red headed step-son! We've got big ideas and dreams for this particular one. For example, did you ever see our Bimmer-W? ... We don't run no regular kind of beauty school up over this way! Let us know if you need to be pulled out of that pothole, :-p #89 1989 Subaru JUSTY RS 4WD 121, 021 miles

That's not the Belly Button at Moab that's just one of the smaller Spring Time potholes over here on the Cross Bronx Expressway on the East Coast. I'll take the Pepsi Challenge any day of the week!:-p Actually that is a somewhat sick in the head pre-dug grave... you dudes are all nuts. Did I mention you guys are nuts?; Respectfully, #89 1989 Subaru JUSTY RS 4WD 121, 009 miles

Studded Nokians? Stock tire size?
#89 replied to labatt13's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Studs rusted from road salt - so must be steel. We used these on an 85 FWD GL Hatch at Lake Allston, MA during the 90 something Ice Races at the Nicholls Winter Carnival. Most of the SCCA Rally guys and local wackos (respectfully) were using 100's of reverse bolt studs in their tires and such. Our NOKs kicked some arse styles. We got them as a hand me down... were very broke at the time - so had no choice but to run them in the street from Jan 11th to June 15 ~22 miles a day. Finally swapped them off, then on again for winter road driving and they still were biting the snow/ice. These are A-OK tires! Nonfiction, #89 1989 Subaru JUSTY RS 4WD 121, 009 miles -
:-\ Could someone be so kind as to share the link to the original site....? Sideways in this case sounds like a true 180* range of angle not just goofing with 30-40* acceleration slides. Would like to see the article... a lot of factors to consider... Wheel drive definitely also steering wheel/tire position... Interested as I will need a bit of Science (and then some!) to accomplish certain unthought/unheard of goals in this season's cold events;) ; Sincerely, #89 1989 Subaru JUSTY RS 4WD 121, 009 miles

The sickest flaps I saw were... cut out of a blue 55 gallon plastic drum. They were affixed to all four corners of an old Audi Quattro! The dudes up at the Nichols Winter Carnival Ice Races in Lake Allston, MA. This was prior to the nixing of SCCA Pro & Club Rally. We put an 85 FWD GL Hatch through its paces nbone stock - good stuff. Kanpai! #89 1989 Subaru JUSTY RS 4WD 121, 009 miles

Howdy, I have nightmares about rust... I used to curse rust when playing with BMW 2002s from the 70's (in the late 90's). A few folks mentioned to me that rust is just the metal's desire to return to the earth from which it came... If you've never done bodywork glance over ANY Haynes Manual... they have a fairly good basic intro usually in a color section of whichever model & make's manual. Bring those spots down to BARE, RUST/PIT FREE metal. Local parts shop should have a little bottle of stinky pink stuff called Naval Jelly. Apply a dose of this stuff to any areas you are not sure you could sand/cut down to perfection (possible pits, etc.) Follow the instructions on the bottle being careful with skin and non metal surfaces... rinsing the treated areas thoroughly. Check the parts store or order POR-15 - a darn good rust converting catalyst and inhibitor - there are few to no substitutes. Don't get it on you hands unless you you like the dirty hands for 3 weeks look. Give the areas a 'light' coating w/ a foam brush (tends to be thick and build up...). Use bondo/fiberglass resin to level out surface... a nice product on the market right now is 'HALF-TIME' filler - is self leveling and pretty smooth stuff. 88% of a good paint job is prep... a finishing/spot putty is recommended for tiny scratch filling or pin holes. 'ICING' is another nice product... I'd stay away from glazing and spot putty of the red generic/Bondo variety... tends to sink within 1/2 year. Prime area(s) with a decent 'Sanddable Filler Primer'... try to use an even spray cap like those found on 'DupliColor' cans. Stripper, Make sure to go to the local/decent parts shop and pick up a can of P'Blaster Penetrating Catalyst. Spray some carefully (just on the lug nuts - not rotor/pads/drum, etc.) on the other nuts before fudging with them to prevent this problemo in the future. Also put a little bit of lube (to the effect of a half drop of 10W-30) on each stud's threads at each removal. Good Luck; Skill, #89 1989 Subaru JUSTY RS 4WD 121,001 miles

93 Justy with ECVT transmission..worth buying??
#89 replied to gasman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
:-\ Here's a basic but pretty accurate review of the ECVT... http://auto.consumerguide.com/Auto/Used/reviews/full/index.cfm/id/2351/act/usedcarreviewroadtest/ I see the majority of available ECVT Justy examples with a 'needs transmission work' byline. Would personally stick with the 5 Speed for ooomph, better MPG control, and most importantly enjoyment. Although I wound up with a carbureted, the fuel injected '91-'93 would also provide additional consistency and a couple of more horses. (Under 100 HP, every horsie counts!) OHH YEAHHH! Your efforts paid off... you can fit so many schweet honey-girls in that Loyale Limo. I was searching for weeks for those caps when I had my 85 GL hatch. After running 58,000 miles and a 4 wheels off the ground ice-race at the Nicholls Winter Carnival, I sold it years ago with 175,000 on the ticker to a senior named Mrs. Leung (that's exactly what she wrote on the bill of sale!) Every once in a while, I see her tooting around in it to this day! Keep up the great work, #89 1989 Subaru JUSTY RS 4WD 119,111 miles -
Howdy!:-\ My '89 is a number of months through the 'sorting out' phase... The high idle (auto-choke controlled?) is ~1800... sometimes 1600 sometimes 2000. After getting engine temp up a bit it is supposed to kick back down. If not, depress the gas pedal one time firmly/quickly and it should kick down to 900ish. Did the tune-up help? 88 Justy 4wd questions, wheels, etc.
#89 replied to Mikldom's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
JUSTY Wheels are definitely 4 X 100. A main concern is the wheel well clearance (especially fronts). On my '89 RS 4WD, the original 13's were at most 5" wide. I am running some a truly bastardized 15 set up right now (won't mention the OEM brand at this moment!... will post pics shortly). Was only able to do this by removing the splash guards and angle grinding the original metal flares and arch supports off (over 14 lbs worth!). Wound up glassing (still in progress) some schweet vintage fiberglass Datsun '210'? flares on... Have a ball with it- please share progress/JPEGs, #89 1989 Subaru JUSTY RS 4WD 119,111 miles -

L2.7T, Thx for the advice... have tried a couple of those options but will trudge ahead... next time you're in the NY area cash in your chip for a drink hydrating or otherwise. Other Soob Heads: Still open to other connections... #89 1989 Subaru JUSTY RS 4WD 119,000 miles -
Guys, Came around a traffic circle 2 weeks ago shifted lazily... all of a sudden- my shift pattern is 1 1/2 feet in diameter with only revrse and 1st!... coasted to shoulder- thankfully! Lay under car and finally saw a torn protective 'boot' surrounding a linkage 'rod' that had come away from a 'linkage cup'. Forced the rod back to seat in the cup and was able to select gears... barely if super careful. No one wanted to touch it- a bunch of clowns talked about needing a new trans when you could see it was a linkage issue. Subaru dealer scratched its head. i limped it to one more place a local transmission shop figuring they had seen hundreds of linkages... they wound up welding an additional length of 'linkage rod' to prevent the rod from slipping out of the cup and packed it with heavy grease. i have been shifting hard to stress test the 30 day warranty on this laboe sinc with no problem. The shift throw is a little longer but A-OK. NOTE: This part failure was preceded by a rattling noise in the shifter audible from inside the car.... B, Don't sweat it- most of these guys use a steaming system or low pressure spray after some type of 'engine foaming cleanser'... ASK him! A couple of guys have used the Castrol SuperClean method, but that'll cause rusty nuts and bults later on due to the heavy alkali content. Have him cover an incomings to the carb airfilter and put a bead of silicone around the distibutor cap where it meets the rotor base (good idea if you're going to play with the AWD in wet/muddy conditions anyway). if you are in a pinch/rush a sandwich bag with a rubberband around the distributor cap will do. control arm bolt won't come out after nut removed
#89 replied to idosubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Been there while playing with BMW 2002s from the '70s... FRUSTRATING! Try a 30 year old car! Definitely pick up a can of PB'Blaster or bottle of 'Mouse Milk' (WD 40 just won't do)... has to be a penetrating catalyst. Then spray the area and area around it with water- use a propane torch and compressed air duster (like for blowing out computer keyboards)... the compressed carbon will act to quick freeze the area. Alternate flame and 'ice' will expand and contract the b*stard in there. Another squirt with the penetrant and try what you were trying to get it out originally.
