Trans control unit swap out
86BRATMAN replied to rustfarmer's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThat's a phase 1 vs phase 2 difference. Not legacy vs impreza difference. Case and point. https://m.ebay.com/itm/98-1998-Subaru-Forester-TRANSMISSION-COMPUTER-MODULE-UNIT-TCM-TCU-31711AD660-/122675307739

Trans control unit swap out
86BRATMAN replied to rustfarmer's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI've got a couple of 4.11 final drive phase 1 tcus from the first few cars legacys I parted out. They've been sitting on a shelf for about 8 years now. Duty C solenoid failure is much more common than tcu failure. There have been a few cases documented on here over the years. But it is very, very rare.

Trans control unit swap out
86BRATMAN replied to rustfarmer's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXNo, the 01 tcu won't work in your 98. You need one from a phase 1 car. Direct replacement will be from a 96-98 outback. But any 95-98 can be used for diagnostic purposes.

EJ25 block is plugged with calcium – should I bother cleaning it?
86BRATMAN replied to Dake's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAnd people wonder why I bad mouth the "coolant conditioner". It's nothing more than stop leak that Subaru decided to use as a bandaid to get cars through the warranty period.

4eat in an ea81 body, how much lift?
The 97 legacy fsm shows maf signal at tcu plug B54 pin 9.

4eat in an ea81 body, how much lift?
There is more than just tps signal shared between the ecu and tcu, even on phase 1 cars. You have maf, engine rpm, torque cut, vss, tps signal and tps power supply, control system ground, sensor ground, and then the diagnostic wiring that gets tied together for the obd and/or ssm port.

4eat in an ea81 body, how much lift?
That would be the easiest way to do it. Adding in the tcu wiring would require tearing down another harness anyway.
-
4eat in an ea81 body, how much lift?
You'd just leave the tcu and transmission wiring intact in the donor harness. Would make the strip down take a bit longer, but not much more difficult.

‘86 Brat Fuel Tank Search
I just saw your other post about the lift, if you're going to be doing a full round of drivetrain drop brackets you can use a 2wd fuel tank as well. A 3" drop of the rear suspension components gives enough clearance for the differential to clear the 2wd tanks. These days it may not make a tank much easier to find, but it opens up the possibility to the whole line of ea81 body styles.

Reman turbo losing shaft nut within first minutes of running
86BRATMAN replied to Gloyale's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI have used several chras from what I'm going to assume is the same European company. I've never had an issue with their complete chra. From where I'm sitting this seems to be an assembly error, not a product quality problem.

Rear Diff swap 96 to 92 Lego
86BRATMAN replied to OR'sLonewolf's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThey're both phase 1 4eats, they'll interchange. You'll have to remove the electronic speed sensor from the newer trans and install the speedometer cable from the old one. Yes, you can simply swap the pinion flange from one diff to another.

Rear Diff swap 96 to 92 Lego
86BRATMAN replied to OR'sLonewolf's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXBe prepared to swap the pinion flange too. They changed to a larger bolt pattern for the driveshaft somewhere in the mid 90s.

Tuning 1993 ej22
86BRATMAN replied to Tireman28's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSomewhere in the anuls of the site there are topics about chipping the stock na ecu. That's the only why you'll get anywhere significant without a difference ecu.

Component weights inside
For what it's worth, the ea81 3at 4wd tailshaft will weigh exactly the same as manual.

4eat in an ea81 body, how much lift?
Something had to have been modified, I ran an ej207 in mine. First fitting of the engine had the timing covers literally touching both frame rails.
-
4eat in an ea81 body, how much lift?
Dohc engines into the ea81 chassis do need a bit of massaging to give clearance around the timing covers. Couple minutes with a hammer and you're good to go.

4eat in an ea81 body, how much lift?
I have an ej and manual awd trans in my ea81 hardtop with no drivetrain drop. Two inches would be plenty to get a 4eat to fit in the tunnel.

Ea81, Brat, Engine Electrical Plugs Question
On mine I used the ej harness to run the signal into the cabin, then tapped into the back of the cluster. I left my setup completely reversible just in case for some reason I ever decided to go back to the ea81t.
-
EJ Engine Plug Test Question
You can get some adapters to run the ea oil pressure sender off the port where the ej pressure switch lives. Then run it through the ej harness to feed the stock gauge.

EJ2E(ER27 swap into an automatic?
presslab used an early legacy tcu to run an ea82t 4eat. There is no reason you couldn't do the same for this swap.
-
EJ2E(ER27 swap into an automatic?
Grab a fwd ej 4eat front diff section. They're 3.70 final drive like the xt6 4eat and it will bolt in place of the existing piece. The wiring will be a little more involved than a manual trans ej swap because you'll have to connect the tcu signals along with the rest of the normal wiring.
