EA82T (L) Bypassing TB hot water ?
Gloyale replied to discopotato03's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well in the USA. The only year with a Turbo Spider intake IS 87.5. FSM for 87.5 XT Shows only turbo have EGR. So for that year, it is a turbo/NA difference I don't have an 88 XT FSM. But the L-series FSM for 88 shows that the EA82T has EGR, EXCEPT for the Cali models. Of course 4 cyl. XTs in USA in 88 where all N/A. But The EA82T in the L series is the only other MPFI version to compare to for that year. Perhaps 49 state XTs had no EGR, and Cali models did. Like the other MPFI EA82 of that year. So for 88 it would have to be a Cali/49 state difference By 89, EGR valves where eliminated from all MPFI engines. 89 XT, and L-series FSMs show that no MPFI cars had EGR. 89 and after, no MPFI ea82, turbo or NA, had EGR. -
EA82T (L) Bypassing TB hot water ?

I don't think it's a Turbo/NA difference. It's about the Year. My Spider is from a 90 or 91, and it does not have an EGR valve. Of course it is not from a turbo either. -
Bingo, water in oil is sure sign(unless possibly a freeze plug under the valve cover popped out) Don't drive it any more at all, water in the oil will Kill the bearings. I'm guessing the fan thermositch? or Thermostat. If both of those check out I'd replace the radiator.

This is contadictiory and somewhat incorrect. Firstly, Automatics DO NOT have a viscous coupler/differential. They use hydraulic, electronically controlled, clutch pack. Just like the clutches used for the automatic trans gears. When it gets pressure it is an absolute direct coupling to the rear axles. However, they do not like mismatched tires still (altough autos can be put into Front Wheel Drive) Now the Manual trannys DO have a viscous diff. And there is no way to disable it. Put tires of any signifigant size difference on one and it will cook the viscous pack. You won't notice any problems till you need the traction and you get nothing but One wheel spinning. Or it will fail in the other manner and lock and you'll have massive torque bind trying to turn into that parking space.

Ever actually take one apart? It is so a differential. It's a limited slip Differential, but still has spider gears on a pinion just like any other diff. Viscous pack is attached to it much like the clutch type LSD used in rear ends (except obviously a viscous pack instead of mechanical clutch disc stacks)

Exploring 3 plug TPS for Spider TB .
Gloyale replied to discopotato03's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Let me guess, you were swapping onto an 87+ EA82T, correct? The problem here, is that he is trying to use it on an old style 85/86 ECU set up, flapper maf, seperate ignition module, and importantly for this discussion, idle switch/WOT switch type TPS. The stock spider TPS won't work as it is potentiometer style. No spiders where ever used with the old style so there is no stock solution. -
As I said, MOST GL had D/R. Most GLs had power Windows/doors as well. But all those things were optional. I have seen 88 GLs, with no power windows or locks, and Single Range tranny. Basically an early Loyale

They can be adjusted. 2 Lock nuts on the back of the cable. 8mm and 14mm IIRC(I know right????) And you do know you need to set the brakes firmly, before it will really hold.

EA82T (L) Bypassing TB hot water ?
Gloyale replied to discopotato03's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Non spider EA82, MPFI also had warmed TB. 2 hoses, one in, one out. hose come out of and go back into the coolant passage section of the intake. On spiders though, the tube comes out of the intake, but the return is to the heater core to water pump tube. That tube runs under the intake, from heater core back to Waterpump. My question is, do you have the coolant return tube from the Spider intake engine? If not, then where are you going to bypass the hose to? Non spider engines don't have the extra nipple on that tube. I think you could just cap off the outlet line on the coolant crossover. -
Not all 88 and 89s were D/R. Either trans was available on GLs(altough it seems most had D/R) I had one grenade the HI/LO gears. Only low range functioned after that. Had to pull the rear driveshaft section to drive around til I got new trans. In fairness I was wheelin in deep snow and not being gentle to 'er.

Exploring 3 plug TPS for Spider TB .
Gloyale replied to discopotato03's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It' close sizewise, but the mounting holes are a bit wider, and the plug is similar, but with different notch pattern. Both issues could be solved with a drill and a razor/utility knife. I see what you're getting at. Idle switch would stay as is potentiometer fed to said device. Set device to only close switch above 4-ish volts for WOT I think it might work. Or I could mail you the 3 prong TPS I drilled out and flipped over. It' sitting in a baggy in my parts box. -
possible lightweight hatch class for EA82 coupe.

I though the international measurement of crap was Courics. "that crap weighs at least 7 Courics!" (South ParK) -
..."Small" to "Big" Clutch Swap...
Gloyale replied to Loyale 2.7 Turbo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I actually have a full clutch set for EA82 2wd (small) disc. Bought it for a car that someone said had bad clutch but but was actually an axle. I could ship it. PM me if you need -
..."Small" to "Big" Clutch Swap...
Gloyale replied to Loyale 2.7 Turbo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
2wd Non-turbo small clutch 7-7/8 inch 2wd turbo Big Clutch 8-7/8 inch 4wd all Big Clutch 8-7/8 inch Try to find a clutch set for the older EA81/EA71 clutch. I believe the older EA81 4wd Stuff is the "small" clutch 7-7/8 in. not sure if the preure plate will be the mall though. -
want to know the dimensions...
Gloyale replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So let me get this right. You want someone (SJR, AA, BYB) who has done the work of measuring and designing a lift kit to give you their specs. So that you can make one for yourself and not buy the one they make, that would actually pay them for their work? And you say you wouldn't build more, but what's to garaunty that shared information wouldn't become a new competitor? No offense. I don't have any stake in it. it's just my $.02 -
Looks like the 99 and up diagrahm. I'm pretty damn sure it's the 4.11 ratio AT one. Sticker looks just like the one on the diff. I think it was swapped into the car. L trim level sedan. It could have been a 99 but definately not newer, it was for sure a 95-99 body style. So now the question is, would this be a VLSD?

'85 Brat Front Height Adjusters
Gloyale replied to casm's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
+1 Glad someone else caught that The thing I always think of when I see a one strut only replacement is possibly a wreck. Or at least a curb hit from understeer in the snow bending stuff in the front end. -
Is the pump still siezed? How is it running without a timing belt? Have you replaced those things? If you replaced it all and you change the oil and found no shavings then you are fine. But if you haven't then stop running it.

I was at the junkyard today. While there I came across a 95 or 96 Legacy sedan, automatic. What i strange is that It had a rear Diff I've never seen. It did not have the star pattern, bolted on bearing caps. It had screw in caps much like those on the front Diff(trans). Adding more confusion it had a finned rear cover, like an aftermarket thing but it had Fuji stickers. 2 small ones, one center and one on the edge of the cover. Not the Usual silver sticker with the Gear ratio on it. Different. One is a bar code label with a string of # under, ----2461, the first 4 # are unreadable. The second sticker was something like "VAX1FET13" Wish I had taken a pic. Does anyone know what this diff is? Is it VLSD? It acted like an Open diff when I spun it (oppostie rotaion of wheel), but A VLSD would act like that until some heat from slipping, correct? Any idea?

Ford V8's from the 60's to the 90' (289,302,351w,351m,390,429,etc...) use an elbow at the waterpump just like EA pumps. Podunk gas stations in the middle of BFE, almost anywhere, will have one of those elbows. At least they are much more likely to have that than "subaru" parts
