Thanks everbody! Yeah I'm looking forward to the 5sp. What have you guys done for the throttle cable? I haven't even looked at that part yet. Any tips? Daniel

I know I've said it somewhere before, but your brat was one of my initial inspirations for mine! Also your fuel pump page on your website was very helpful, so thanks alot! Daniel

seat compatability ea 81
crockettbrat replied to DaveAP's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've got leather legacy seats in my brat. I love the lumbar support! Much better than the old ripped up stock seats. If you've got to do some welding might as well get the nicest seats for the $. I think I paid $25 for my two front seats at pick n pull. The brackets were very simple to make. Daniel -
Hey Thanks you guys! Now I'll spend the $ on the drive shaft and start figuring out the exhaust and stuff the rat nest of wires out of sight. I'm so glad this thing started. I was really sure I screwed up the harness and was going to have to get another one. A couple hours with the service manual and it all started to make sense though. I cant wait to go for a drive, plus the new 5speed d/r! Daniel

Yeah, yeah, yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cut the power wire to the coil by mistake! Hooked it up to switched power and she fired right up!!!!!!!!!! I'm so psyched!!!! It sounded great even though there is no exhaust other than the y pipe and I only let it run for a second! Thanks usmb and numbchux for the write up. I cant believe it worked. YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

ok: So now the fuel pump is working correctly, but it still wont start. I've noticed that I'm getting low voltage to my injectors while the ignition is off, approx. 1 volt. I get 12 volts once the ignition is on? Could this cause it to not start?
-
ARGGGH! Now the fuel pump is not cycling on with the ignition switch. I've rechecked my grounds, although this must be my problem. Any opinions? Daniel

Ok- So a little more fiddling and now my fuel pump is cycling on for a second when the ignition is turned on, so I'm feeling better. I'm quite sure the engine is flooded at the moment from me hot wiring the fuel pump earlier, so I'm going to let it sit for a while and then try to fire it up. I'll post more later. Daniel

Hello: I've plugged in my harness and the ECU is not operating the fuel pump. Obviously I've screwed something up! Surprise surprise. Anyway, before I go to the junk yard for a new harness to send to someone who knows what they're doing, I thought I'd try to figure it out. I have fused power going straight from the battery to the ecu and to the main ignition relay. I have switched power going to the light green wire on the ignition relay. I get 12v through the relay to the yellow red wires when I turn on my ignition and the big yellow wire at the fuel pump relay has 12v with the ignition on. The small yellow wire at the fuel pump relay which comes from the ecu b58 pin 13 doesn't have any power with the ignition on. I tried attaching it to switched power, but the ECU is not grounding out the light green black wire. Any ideas appreciated. I have checked my ground wires over and over and will check there again. Hey all: Another trip to NAPA and found radiator hose number 8987. This worked perfect for my lower radiator hose. I trimmed about 1.75" off the radiator side and it was perfect. Now I need some new clamps for my heater core hoses. The stock EA hoses seem like they will be fine for now. If I can get the coolant filled I think I can plug everything in and see if it works. I got my fuel pump hooked up yesterday. I hope I didn't screw up the harness. Daniel

Hey all: Went to NAPA today and got fuel line, shorty belt for alternator (thanks again for the part number) and found the perfect hose for the upper radiator. It has the ej inside diameter on one side and the ea diameter on the other side. It is napa heater hose number 7564. I have a 4/3 lift and i shaved about 1" off the ea side and it fits perfectly If I find a good lower hose I'll post it too. Daniel

Made more progress today. I got the battery moved over to the other side. Soldered up the alt wires. Removed the old fuel pump and figured out what tube was what coming out of the tank. My EA82 fuel pump bolted right up to the brat fuel pump bracket. Gotta love subs. Will go find fuel line tomorrow. I put the battery back in and cranked the engine over. Kind of made me feel like the brat is semi-alive again. Good motivator. So it seems like I have to run fuel lines, deal with the radiator/heater core plumbing, and plug in my harness. Then we'll see how badly I botched the wire harness. Worst case I'm going to the junk yard to buy a harness to send to someone who knows what they're lookin' at. Oh yeah. Any one have a part number for a shorty belt to run the alternator on the EJ without power steering? I went to napa and they didn't seem to have anything short enough. Thanks. Daniel

Thanks alot pooparu! That is exactly the info I needed. Daniel

Hey all: I got the 5sp d/r and the ej motor installed in the brat! Thanks to Jerry for the quick service and quality product on the 5sp kit. Also thanks to M rose for the adapter plate. Everything went together easily. Thanks to usmb for all the info and help. Now comes the wiring:eek: . I think I've got a handle on it but I'm sure I'll have many questions as I move forward. Come to think of it what have you 5sp swappers done with the transmission wiring. My new 5sp has 3 plugs and the old tranny had two? Any info appreciated. Thanks . Daniel

There is a guy in Fairfield, Ca. who has one too. Its pretty cool. He's in the air force and brought it back from Europe. I'll bet he needs parts. I dont think he's on USMB, but I could forward him a link to this post if you want. Daniel

Im glad you're ok. Accidents really suck and take a while to work themselves out. My wife got clipped over a year ago and got hurt. We're still haggling with the cheap a$$ insurance company. Don't let them screw you on the value of the brat. Start collecting every brat for sale posting you can find because they are going to come up with a ridiculously low value for the car. Definitely argue up their low ball offer for the brat! Good luck and Im sorry this happend. The brat still looks good! Daniel

thanks for the reply. It makes sense that this would work. I'm starting to plan out my build and will start looking for the parts soon. Ive got a little time because the brat ej swap is on the front burner, and my tent trailer is going to Mexico for a month. I'll post after I make some progress. Daniel

Hey all: I've got a little tent trailer with torsion bar suspension. I lifted it and its great offroad. It got me thinking of building a more heavy duty version with the rear suspension from a sub. Nice steel frame, lots of clearance, plop my tent trailer body on top and extend the whole thing to fit some dirt bikes! It could even have brakes. Anybody done something like this? Any thoughts? My buddy and his family are borrowing my trailer for a month in Mexico, but when it returns I'm going to get started. Let me know what you think. Daniel

Anyone Know where to get carpet kits?
crockettbrat replied to True2Blue's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
JC whitney lists them, but they suck. I bought one for the brat from them and it doesn't fit quite right and no carpet for behind the seats was included. Good luck. Daniel -
Ok then! I got off my a$$ and got this thing going again. I drove the brat under ea power for the last time today. I moved the BMW out of the way, because its DONE!, and put the brat up by the shop. The kid and I spent the afternoon and took the hood off and pulled the motor. It came out nice and easy. Hopefully I'll have time tomorrow to pull the olds 4sp lump. The ea82 flywheel is going to the machine shop tomorrow and I'll get my clutch kit ordered. What have you others who've gone before me done to your ej before installing it. I figured at least the timing belts. Any other recommendations? Thanks.
-
No way it would pass. Even if they didn't notice it wasn't the stock carb, the emissions would most likely not pass. I just pulled my ea81 out of the brat tonight for my ej swap. Its even got a "new" y pipe with cat. The old lump ran great and passed smog last may. I'd let it go cheap (like a 12pack or something) minus the sensors I need off it. Good luck. Daniel

I put a 6000# winch on mine with a big steel tube bumper. The weight has not been a problem for the brat. I cranked the adjuster bolts a few turns, but I actually didn't notice any ride height difference between before the winch and after.
-
I made the bumper myself. 10' hunk of 3/16" 4"x 6" steel tube. Holes cut on milling machine, bent by brute force and a big f'in hammer. I got the idea from the firetruck bumpers that stick out enough that you can stand on them, but I scaled it down to brat size. 86bratman- thanks for the info on the vss. I'll search for your post. If anyone has wire color info on the 84 vss that would be helpful incase I cant find the post. I have searched alot, but I'll go back to it. Thanks. Daniel
