Road Trip
Hey all... I am leaving in the morning on a ten day Subaru road trip, Mendocino to Ventura tomorrow, Ventura to Huntington Beach Sunday, and then HB to Phoenix Monday. Homeward trip will be through Death Valley via Titus Canyon, and up to Bridgeport to Travertine Hot springs, which I hope will involve some snow, mapping software says 2100 miles. Subaru is in great shape, but just a warning to y'all in the route...may need Subie favors. bringing lots of parts, part of the reason for the trip is a great mechanic down there. he can work on the subaru while I fix his daughters computer, again! Should have my TWB rack on, and the LSD installed for the return trip. Mendodave

Bumpers, She's mean now!
Hi Tony, is there a bumper with a winch mount, or another thing i was thinking is to make the winch mount plug into the reciever hitch....hee hee.... that way you could disconnect it and put it in front or back. but the power leads would be a problem in the rear.... anyway, i should have your soobfari rack on pretty soon david

Ground wire
Hi everyone, Anybody tried aftermarket ground wires? I noticed my main ground wire from the battery to engine is awfully thin, about pencil size...my bmw bike has a bigger ground wire than that! the HKS ones are a little overkill i think. david

No power, Missfiring and stalls under heavy load or when flooring it. **FIXED**
I have had problems like this, and it does seem to be the carb/fuel supply, but it was wires... make sure the wires and cap are clean and dry. do you have a hot coil in the wagon? easier to check than the carb, and if you go through the carb and it does not fix it, you will be slightly perturbed... as in PISSED! if there is that much mud under there, it needs to be cleaned anyway! little girl needs advice on justy dilema
Hi Shell, if you were to repair it, would you have to take it to get inspected again? most of the reason for keeping it is that you know the car, and it has been inspected... Ken, she is west of London, and the MOT is a beast, they are very strict on emissions over there. Of course, they also don't have belching beasts pouring out emissions, either. Good Luck! David

Suspension suggestions
Hiya Subarubies, I have a '84 wagon with the PK lift kit, and it feels like it needs shocks and struts. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to replace the shocks/struts with, or should I just go to Sears and get the Monroe stuff they sell. Thanks in advance! Mendo

Ball Joint Replacement
It was not the pinch bolt, that came out fine. the dad blessed stinking ball joint socket would not come out. Sticky greenies, great tip! anyway, i soaked it in penetrating oil before knocking off last night, and then went out there this am, 30 degrees! and heated the steering knuckle, tapped the ball joint back in a wee bit, pried it out, tapped in, etc. repeat 5 times, grab with the tool of tools, a big visegrip, and twist. what a pain! I think I will wait a bit on the other side. but it is all done, much better steering, and no grinding axle. whew! Dave:D

Ball Joint Replacement
Hey there subies I am having the devil of a time getting the blasted ball joint out of my steering knuckle....any tricks to this besides a BFH? tried to make a puller but the bolt shaft turns, it is out about 4 mm, I am thinking of penetrating oil all over it and bash it back in, and then try to pull it out. Tried heat, screwdriver in the clamp slot, etc.... Brian, I did get my axle in!! thanks for the tips. but that ball joint is fscked, and now i am not rolling. Mendo

Electrical problem
Hi all, with this collective intellgence regarding subarus, i outa be able to get an answer.... I have an '84 GL Wagon, the old PKmobile... It has a new rebuilt alternator, and new battery. after the rebuilt alt went in, my charging problem went away, and my volt gauge read 13.5 or so volts all the time, regardless of electrical things being used. after the new battery went in, it was the same. Now, about 2-3 months later, it is doing weird things. Sometimes the volt gauge reads 13.5v, sometimes 8v, sometimes 10v. If I hook a multimeter to the battery, it is reporting 14 volts. The battery never gets discharged, so the charging system is apparently working. When I turn the key to acc and all gauges have power, the volt gauge reads 8v. Sometimes while driving it jumps to 13.5v, and back again. My question is: Were is the most likely place for a bad ground, or short? I remember reading about a wire under the seat, passenger or driver I don't recall, that people have said gets worn. The backup light switch wire was grounding, that is fixed. Any ideas? Besides living with it, I mean! thanks!

Most common subaru?
In Mendocino, there are the normal flocks of Outbacks and Foresters, but there are quite a few EA81s, almost all trashed and rusted, and a few EA82s. Nor Cal in general has quite a few subarus. My moms block in Berkeley alone has 8 Outbacks, 3 Foresters, and an EA81 Subarus rule! dave

Qman, 3rd eye Q in '84
Hi Qman, i know you remember me, the submarine. parts still available! anyway, i finally have all the pieces together to get the eye alive, but the stuff i took out of the harness does not match the relay and switch very well. i would like to be able to have the eye on alone, unconnected to the main lights, but still have the original switch, relay, and light. which i have. but the relay is strange, and i don't really know the wires into it, the 6 wire one. my harness wiring does not match the connecter wiring, coloring code wise. do you know any tips on getting this to work? I see it on that sweet brat. i know it is possible. the elec dudes i have had look at it say get the DTDP switch. i want stock. anyone else? can we put this in the Ultimate manual? please tell me no one did. (0k, looked, the same, except different..good work, you guys) off for a 5 day moto ride, so will reply back Monday, and can take photos for manual. d

Waterpump
Hi Brian, Someone ran straight water through this poor thing, all steel piping is terribly rusted. I am going to need another manifold, hopefully with Weber attached, to fix the last piece. Got a waterpump from the local parts place, they had a new one in stock. MUCH greater flow.....especially with the pipe from the top of the water pump to the heater hose replaced. Wait till you see the photo. Looks like a BAAAAD artery I will take that pump if you find out it fits dave
