More Power steering Q's
Mendodave replied to Mendodave's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ahhh the plot thickens, Dr. Watson my car is a 8/83 so I've got the newest? thanks. dave -
OK, so how many different racks ARE there? I have a 4wd '84 GL wagon, with PS. The rack is pissing out, but driveable. I got a PnP rack in Sac with the Junkie, and the hose fittins are all on the top of the steering gear, two to the pump, and two to the front of the PS rack. The four all are together, at the top of the gearbox, near the shaft to the steering wheel. The rack that is IN the car has the two lines from the pump at the top of the gearbox, approximately the same place as the PnP rack, and the two outputs to the front of the rack come off the bottom of the gearbox. I ordered a rebuilt rack, after describing my installed one, they promised that they had the one that I had, and shipped the same type I got from PnP. I can't be alone in this, somebody out there must have run across this. I might bring the PnP rack to WCSS so the differences are more clearly visible... I have photos too, if anyone is interested. Arrrrrgggghhhhhhh!

WCSS6 CARAVAN? LA to Hood River
Mendodave replied to s'ko's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Speaking of CBs, I have one I can give to somebody. Cobra model 20plus. not sure how many channels it is, guessing 23. The digital readout works, for the ones, the tens don't. so you don't know if you are at 5, 15, or ? all you'd need is a cheap mag antenna dave -
WCSS6 CARAVAN? LA to Hood River
Mendodave replied to s'ko's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
I'll be in Klamath Falls in the 12pm-1pm area. Leaving Mendocino Thursday night, camping on Hwy 96 near the OR border. Then Friday AM up and at it, over to I5, up to Hwy 66, then over to K-Falls. Junkie has my cell number, and I've gotten the CB installed. Now I am going to get ready to drop the PS rack and wait for the rebuilt one tomorrow. Subarus North! d -
OK, finally getting the PS rack installed that Junkie and NVZeno helped me get...a long time ago. My wagon is the model year '84, which is what the PnP rack was supposed to be from, but the hydraulic lines are different. The one from PnP has all four lines on the top, and the one in my car has the in and out from the pump on top, and the ones to the rack on the bottom. My question is can I just swap the rack case? It pulled off the replacement easily, I will need a new gasket and seal. Photos are possible, I guess. My '82 FSM shows the one I have, and the Haynes 80-89 manual shows the replacement. Go figure. Also, while I have this one out it seems prudent to have it rebuilt, all the shops around here just roll their eyes and say we don't do that. Someone else on the board said the parts for his Loyale PS rack rebuild were $50 or so, would that be from SOA or ? Thanks!

I have PKs old rig, a 1984 wagon with the 3/2 lift in it. Saw it on the board and flew down and got it, before he changed his mind, again! Sorry PK! still going strong. No Weber yet, but I've got a LSD rear end, K&N filter, pretty rad stereo, and a TWB rack. See you all in Hood River!

Sawzalled the aircleaner
Mendodave replied to Mendodave's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Already have the hot accell coil, good wires, ngk split electrode plugs, and a K&N filter. might do the cat modification, but it is a pain to get to, and I like reducing smog as much as I can, balancing that against power is the hard part. -
Sawzalled the aircleaner
Mendodave replied to Mendodave's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It is a carbed wagon. If your Subie is not lifted, you will not have so much of a problem, also, if you need to resmog yearly, this is not an option, unless you get another aircleaner from the salvage yards. Here is a photo. It will pull third around corners it would not do before. -
Hi I was doing a spark plug change, and that damned aircleaner intake pointing directly into the upper heater hose has been bugging me ever since I got this '84 Ozified wagon. With a lifted wagon, the body goes up and the engine doesn't. The air intake was so close to the hose it was rubbing, and I held it back with a ziptie. I saw a post about this, and the postee chopped the intake off just behind the heat valve, so I did too. MUCH more power. Spins up very quickly. Seems like more mileage, I am getting about 300 miles before the light goes on. And it can pull 4th a lot more often. Still need a weber, but hey! David

Sounds like a dance step... Symptoms: set idle, fine for a few days, then idles too high or low. reset idle, ditto burble in exhaust, usually there is the nice steady purr, but with a burble in it occaisonally. I've been told that is a vacuum leak. the car does run pretty damn well, got over 300 miles on the last tank, filled it before the light came on, 10 gallons. not bad for a lifted wagon the carb got worse 'cause i cleaned it, and all the dirt that was clogging the leak came out. d

Heck yes I remember you! That is the trans I am going to put in the '84. The one I drove up to meet you in got buried in the sand on the beach here, high tide took care of all the rest....like the carb I got from you, my digital camera, tools, VOM, etc. I did get the dog out! my present carb has a badly worn throttle shaft, can you check that one and see if it wiggles? if not, i will take it! Hi Skip, I have a CA car with no O2 sensor, so I guess I don't need that? it is a 1984 model Brian: what are your days off? d
-
Hi Miles, thanks! there were a few 85-88 EA82 series, one had a decent looking carb. So I would need that AND the airfilter housing? I don't need to get smogged again, so the different aircleaners are fine... david

Hi all... I went by the PnP in Windsor yesterday, looking for a better Hitachi than I have, my throttle shaft is worn out. the only '80-84 car there was a Nice Hatchback, 4wd, perfect maroon body, no bumpers. Unfortunately it had a bad engine fire then there was what looked like an XT6, but the back of the car said it was a GL. SPFI and manifold ready to go, the heads are gone off the car. there were also two Peugots with the 15 inch mag wheels like these on my car...great shape. (missing two lug nuts;-)) can't afford a redline weber kit right now, but maybe i should just go for it. Dave

OK, so I have a lifted '84 wagon, and want to put my spare 1981 trans in it for the lower 3rd/4th gears. the trans is in my shop. I have a new throwout bearing and the high dollar tranny mounts. what should i do to the tranny before mounting? Flush it with kerosene, or ? what about seals? are there any seals i should replace while it is out? I have the flywheel/clutch assembly from the same car, and the clutch looks new, the printing on the clutch plate is still there. the rear part of the trans looks dirty, so it could be that seal is leaking. I could take a photo if that is necessary. Thanks for any tips! Dave

Downshifting into 3RD...
Mendodave replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I need to do mine, too. I want to put the earlier one I have in there, with the lower 3rd/4th let me know if we could get together and do these. I'd rather find a 5speed, but I do have this trans sitting here. d -
West Coast Subaru Show is set!!!!
Mendodave replied to Qman's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Hi Brian, I have done that run many times. 12 hours ride on a fast motorcycle to Hood River from Mendocino might need to meet on the way, it would be a good time to go see Tony too. d -
West Coast Subaru Show is set!!!!
Mendodave replied to Qman's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Hi, in Hood River! Cool! My family is from there, on my moms side, and my sister lives there. I will be in on the caravan. how long are you planning on taking? couple days up, couple days back... some great breweries in that town too Mendo -
Hi NV, the graphic i saw had a breakdown of all the subaru transmissions, the 80-82 ones had the same first and second ratios, third was 25% lower, and 4th was 15% lower than the 82-84 transmissions. I thought the taller gears would be good to have on the Phoenix trip, but I was wrong. So, my spare trans will be going in, unless I can find a DR 5speed soon. sure would not have helped on the drive over the Sierras, I only got to second once between Boomtown and Truckee...crawling along in first will try to find that file for you... Road trip - Finished! Weber & LSD Q's
Mendodave replied to Mendodave's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hi Sucker King, don't think it is bad, it seems to work fine, just you can hear/feel clutch sounds in tight 4wd corners, when there is a lot of traction. I think I need better LSD oil. Yes, the 3.9 gears are in there, sure not going to run it without that! thanks, David -
Road trip - Finished! Weber & LSD Q's
Mendodave posted a topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The Subaru chomped its way to Phoenix and back, with only a few hiccups. I got my intake manifold installed, the LSD installed, both front axles with lower ball joints, and a valve adjust. Unfortunately, cleaning the carb cleaned out all the dirt that was blocking the vaccum leaks. the throttle shaft has massive play in it, so it is carb time....that means WEBER! Anyone have tips on how to disconnect the smog stuff the weber doesn't use? Can I use the cruise control with the Weber? I have heard the Redline kit is not that good, any better places to get one? (Car is a '84 GL wagon) Also, my LSD clutch is binding, all I could find for LSD oil was Stalube, according to the board, Kendall or Redline is the best. Would the clutch bind for awhile if the LSD was dry for a month? But the LSD works like a champ! Point at hill, go up it! I came over the I-80 pass yesterday, 15 hours from Bishop to Mendocino, 4 hours from Boomtown to Truckee. that was a drag. Thanks! Mendo Dave -
A hotel in Tahoe would be great... i'm bringing my quart of quarters just for Nevada sounds like hwy 50, then maybe up and over the hill down through Downieville... dave

Hi NV going down on Hwy 101, and up on Hwy 395, and yes, it is sweet. Usually this trip would be done on my motorcycle, but it doesn't need the work the Subi does. I will go over whatever pass is open and has tons of snow on it! have you been to Travertine? just south of Bridgeport. this is October, 2000. hopefully I can get over before I-80, but I think all the passes are closed up that far.
