RPM fluctuates wildly on startup?
Olnick replied to Elipse's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXMy first thought would be a dirty IACV (Idle Air Control Valve). Might try cleaning it and see if that helps.

Please help to diagnose- asphalt/tar smell + Clunking
Olnick replied to KaraK's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIs the "tunk, tunk, tunk" sound consistant with engine speed (RPMs) or wheel rotation speed?

New Guy looking for opinions
Olnick replied to GONZO97's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI think you're off by a year Miles. 1995 was first year of "Outback" but it was just a Legacy with a trim package. Here's Cars 101 dscription: "the 1996 was the first year for a fully realized Outback with the 2.2L or 2.5L engine. The Outback model was introduced in 1995 as a trim level of the 2.2L Legacy with 2 tone paint and special cloth, and the 96 model got the 2.5L engine with the automatic transmission or the 2,2L with the manual. All models got the 2 tone paint, raised ground clearance and raised roof that immediately came to identify the Outback."

'95 Legacy leaking oil & coolant
Olnick replied to doromb's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYour list looks good. You're right, one camshaft seal on each side--they're the same, left or right. Just be sure you get the "new ones" (they're black!) Just reseal the existing oil pump. While you have it off, loctite and tighten the screws on the backing plate. Get a new o-ring for it and seal it to the block with Permatex Ultra-Grey. Try a search on here for details. Personally I wouldn't touch the head bolts--too much potential for really messing things up! You can use "normal" green stuff antifreeze. As for the Subaru cooling system conditioner, I don't think it will do you any good. But maybe someone else has a different opinion. Hope it fixes your problems. Good luck!

Random no start issue.
Olnick replied to tidd1340's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYou might start by removing your old IACV and giving it a thorough cleaning. The only new part you'd need is a small gasket. Clean the rubber tube from the PCV too, and maybe get a new PCV. Good luck.

'95 Legacy leaking oil & coolant
Olnick replied to doromb's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI had good luck with theimportexperts' kit--belt, idlers & waterpump. But go to a dealer or online and get Subaru OEM thermostat and cam & crank seals. Maybe the radiator hoses too. Or contact ShawnW here on the board, I think he can put together a reasonably priced kit for you. Good luck.

Olnick replied to Impreza/Baja's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXBest place to start is with the CEL. What is the code?- Seatbelt swap
Olnick replied to Island Roo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI assume you have a '90-'94 model Legacy? Actually you're in the right place--apparently Canadian models came with manual belts those years. You will need the Canadian trim pieces to do the job right. Check the "Similar Threads" at the bottom of your post or try a search. Good luck.- Radiator Fan Rationality check
Olnick replied to GudjonUnnar's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHi GudjonUnnar, welcome to USMB! I hope folks here can offer helpful suggestions for solving your problem. You might want to add "Iceland" after your city name in the ID info--it often helps us make input when we know where you are located. Good luck!- New Guy - Florida
Congrats on the "new" car--and on finding this site, it's a great place to look for help. Quick tip--get familiar with the search function--just about everything anyone needs to know has probably already been covered in depth!!! That doesn't mean you shouldn't ask questions of course. What year(s) of GL are you looking for? We had two '85 wagons, a GL and a DL, in the family years ago. They were great cars--kinda' wish I still had at least one of them!- Hello from Texas
Welcome aboard! Nah, it's not stupidity--I mean c'mon, you want a Subaru, right?!! And you found the right place here at USMB. Good people, tons of information and a great place to network. May even help you locate what you want. In that vein, you ought to add "TX" after "Midland" in your ID--then folks will have a handle on what's closer to you. Enjoy!- 2003 Forester 2.5XS - Sell it or replace the engine?
Olnick replied to ajmaudio's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWay to go ajmaudio, you were wise to find another shop that had a more "reasonable" approach to the problems. Although (and maybe this is just me) $500 still seems steep for VC gaskets and fixing a simple leak! Anyway, enjoy your trip--and check your levels!- 4EAT Won't shift out of 1st

Olnick replied to Sabaroo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXStrongly suggest you not guess at anything, especially timing.
