1. Have you guys been using any sealant on EA82 head gaskets? (These are graphite). 2. Are you re-tightening them after break in? (It looks like a major pain with the Cam Towers on). Thanks,

If your buying a car I'd buy an EA81 car. If it sounds good and drives good it probably is a good car. The EA81 is so simple that if there is a problem you'll see it coming. AS far as the bodies go, I like the EA82 wagons best. They have lots of "creature features" that the EA81 cars lack. When it comes to motors, I'll take an EA81 over an EA82 any day. The original EA81 in my '83 wagon has never needed anything simple periodic maintenace in 200,00 miles. I'm getting ready to pull it soon for a reseal do to oil leaks but that's it I had an '85 with an EA82, that car always needed something. It always ran, but never as reliably as my '83. Right now I'm working on the third EA82 for my '86. The heads cracked on the original and dropped two valve seats. I bought two used engines that were no good, so I'm putting one together now that ought to work. My point is that I debated throwing in an EA81 because after two bad experiences with the EA82s, I was ready to go back to what I felt was less of a risk. My $.02

The only problem I can see with lightening the flywheel is the it will reduce your rotating mass. The engine will spin up faster but it will fall back out of it's torque range faster too. Subys aren't very "torquey" so they have heavy flywheels. As far as balancing the engine goes.... A boxer engine is as close to naturally balanced as you can get. There are always two pistons moving in oposite directions to balance each other.

Interesting.... I snagged the sway bars from an XT6 a while back but I left the rear arms there (I have turbo sedan rear arms to go with the bar). Are the splines the same on the XT6 rear? Maybe I better go back and grab them since they have the swaybar brackets.

What I ended up doing was to remove the brakes and backing plate, then drive the axle off with a long straight bar and a BFH.

My old EA-82 wagon failed the same way. It needed a carb rebuild. The jets were getting worn.

It's getting late and my brane is tyrd but I think that the passenger (right) belt is aligned first. When you are done with both belts the pass side will be at 6:00 and the drivers side will be at 12:00. But the should not both be at 12:00 at the same time.

Ooops, Craig is correct, I typed too fast. I'm rebuilding a set of EA-82 heads and the right side head I'm working on isn't tapped for the ASV port. So I can either continue with this head or pull one off of one of my other motors and rebuild it. I think I'll go for it, I always hated fighting leaks in that system anyway.

Has anybody been through an emissions test (tailpipe, not visual) with their AVS system blocked off? Did it pass?

I bounced around a few emails with him too. Sounds like he went to a lot of trouble. But what a screamer! It would still be easier to do an EJ motor swap.

Yeah, What Andy said! I took the rear arms and brakes from a turbo sedan and front and rear bars from an XT6 for my '86 wagon. The XT6 bars are much bigger. Hey Andy, Let me know how the stock front bar works out I curious if it is better.

I have two (2) 1983 GL-10 wagons in my back yard. In common they have... 4WD 4SPD D/R A/C P/S P/W P/M C/C Sunroof Digi dash Six speakers Things that are different.... One car has a roof rack and a rear deflector The other one has a factory block heater and finned rocker trim. The door panels are the same as my '83 GL. So I know they exist. :argue:

The FSM has the procedure for rewinding the too. And It Works!

He keeps relisting it. It's only one head not a pair.

Hi Guys, I'm replacing the rear hatch on my '83 wagon but there's a problem.... The connections for the rear defrost have come loose from the glass. I tried soldering them but it's not working very well. Does anybody know a better way to re-attach them? Some kind of a conductive adhesive? Thanks,

I live in Vancouver, WA too. The winters are pretty much non-existant. Last year I don't think we even had any snow! The worst thing about the gravel and sand they spread is that it makes riding your mortorcycle on the first nice day of the year REEEALLY tricky. I've had a couple of pretty "puckery" suprises turning onto side streets!

An impact wrench if good but not needed. Just leave tires and wheels mounted and break it loose with the car on the ground.

I'd but a new cable. I paid 21.00 for one a couple of months ago. The difference was amazing. I had no idea how stiff my old cable was getting.

Try pulling the 4 nuts that attach it to the firewall/master cylinder. And remove all the cables

Yeah I know, Mixing up a vac-line and one of the crossovers is a long shot, especially when I replaced them with the motor out and had plenty of room to see what I was doing. I'm just in the "looking for an excuse to blame myself" stage. I'll get over it, there are plenty of Suby motors around, I'll find one pretty quick and start over. Besides, I DO still have a couple of spare EA81s. If a 5spd will go behind an EA81. An EA81 will go in front of a 5spd:D

No this one was clean. One of the things I did was pull the pan and reseal it. No water there. Man, I wonder if I could have mixed up a vacuum line and a water line? Those crossover lines are pretty small.........

Oh well, I'll find another motor and start over. At least the new parts I threw on this motor can be pulled off and put on the next one. Or I could toss in an EA81...............

Well, I finally got the motor installed in my '86. It ran a little rougher that I wanted, Made a lot more noise than I wanted, Blew a little more smoke than I wanted. For about 5 minutes.......... Then it started blowing pancake batter out the aircleaner I bought the motor from a former board member about a year and a half ago, been in storage until about two weeks ago. I'm guessing a bad headgasket. I can't think of any other way to get that much water into the oil. Man, I just did the timing belts, oil pump water pump, Clutch, main seals, blah, blah, blah. Vent! Vent! Vent! Oh well, see my post in the market place, I need another motor. Wait 'till my Wife hears this, She hates project cars. I'm gonna be so grounded:banghead:
