Just when you think you've seen it all
- What all should i replace/reseal with the engine out?
I would replace the "Mickey Mouse" gasket behind the oil pump. It has to be done with the timing belts off anyway, it's silly not to do it if your in there anyway. The gasket is only about $2.00.- fouling #3 plug
Is it wet and oily? It may just be time for a rebuild. Could be bad rings or valve stem seals. I had the same problem on #4 with one of my hatches. I didn't want to deal with rebuilding the motor so I just kept spare plugs around and changed the plug when it got too fouled.- Stretched Clutch Cable?
They stretch, I put 170,000 miles on my original one in the '83. I finally replaced it while doing another job on the car. I got a lot more adjustment and it felt like it had been greased! I had no idea how stiff my old cable had gotten. A new one was only $20.00 USD and it was a breeze to replace.- ATTN: Portland, Vancouver, Salem, and surrounding area members

Sorry Flow, I should have been watching this forum! Good luck Bro'- State Laws concerning Engine Swaps
Yep, in Washington if it passes a tailpipe test, it's a go. you'll only have trouble if you want an exemption due to repeated failure. Then, you have to pop the hood. You could put blown V8 in it if it'll pass a tailpipe test. My El-Camino was originally a V6 car, I installed a built V8. It took a little tuning but it passed with flying colors. 25 years and older/5 years and newer are exempt- A quick Q on 80-84 interior
There's also a difference in the radio box. Some are part of the console, some are not.- Can someone check the Lynnwood PAP?
This is about Non-Suby parts... Someone on the Impala SS board said there might be a '91 or later (looks like the Chev cop cars) Caprice wagon there. If someone is headed over there could you check and see if it has roof rack cross bars or a PERFECT front bumper? Thanks,- sheesh y am i the only one?
Hey! I practically grew up in Longview! But I've been to Tacoma.... I'm scared straight! Oregon's not so bad...... As long as you're a Hippie or a Witch- Subaru ( and other engine) TRIKES
Kennedy Engineering sells adapter plate to bolt a Subaru to a VW trans-axle. Do a web search for subaru conversion. There's also a subaru conversion group on Yahoo Groups that can help you with parts.http://www.kennedyeng.com/- a better clutch cable!?
Hmm, The cable in my '83 went 208,000 miles. It still didn't break, I replaced it because it was getting stiff.- Helicoil size?
Anybody know the correct/recommended helicoil and stud size for an EA82 exhaust stud replacement? Thanks,- Coolant fan switch Q
My son's 86 is running hot, I checked it out and found that the rad fan didn't seem to be kicking on when it should. I replaced the switch, it comes on but not until the motor gets SPOOKY hot. Are there different temp ranges for the switches? Is there one available that will kick in at a lower temp? Thanks,- I'm back, an apology, and stuff...
I had the oil separator, Thanks for coming back. All is forgiven.. Contact me and I'll re-send my address.- tach has mind of its own
Yeah, What Caleb said! Have it re-bushed.- rear disk brake swap
Make sure that you have the holes in the axle and shaft lined up correctly. It's possible to have them 180 degrees off. Look at the stub axle and the shaft. one side of the hole is flat and the other side is tapered. The two tapered sides have to go together or they will be off by one tooth. If you put it together like that, the pin will never come back out!- Water in #4 Cylinder
I usually use the copper stuff..... I didn't on this one last time because the instructions for the gasket said not to. So does this one but I don't care! I'll use it this time anyway, I'm getting way to good at tearing down these EA82s (this is only the third engine I've had in this car)..... I'm starting to seriously consider swapping a good ole' EA81 in if this happens again.- Water in #4 Cylinder
Well, I pulled the head. It looks like there was a gasket failure near the #4 cyl. There was a spot where the gasket hadn't stuck to the head or the block when I pulled it off. I guess that's the problem. I'll use sealer this time.......- Water in #4 Cylinder
Well, the head's coming off no matter what. I can't see any issue that won't involve that. I guess I'll just wait and see what I find.- Water in #4 Cylinder
Bummer............ My Son calls me up and say's his '86 wagon is being bad, (blowing smoke, running bad, blah, blah blah). I go check it out, but it's blowing steam, not smoke. Water in the oil and vice versa. The compression check is good, 180 to 200 PSI on all cyliders but #4 is wet. I just did the head gaskets on this motor about 2000 miles ago. Pity...... What do you think, cracked head? head gasket?- Disty Vacuum advance - manifold or ported - lets hash this out
You need ported vacuum for the disty. it provides a short advance before the centrifugal advance spins up. If you want more advance, increase the initial timing until it gets hard to start or pings. But I wouldn't on a Suby. I doubt you'd get enough extra ponys to make it worth the hassle of running higher octane gas. Try the 2wd disty it has a quicker advance curve.- Cheap Webers and better adapter plates
That is interesting.... I was just looking for parts for my daughter's '81 210 DLX on ebay and found a brand new weber (actually Holley 5210) kit for the L series 4 cyl, with the adapter. It was only $75.00 and it never did sell. I bet it got relisted.........- Emissions by the year
Almost all have some kind of emmissions, all '81 and newer cars have at least some kind of air injejction system usually A.I.S. with reed valves. I think I heard once that all '81 cars had Cali emmissions (feedback carb W/Duty Solenoids) but that might not be right. I do know that my '81 4X4 Hatch has Cali emmissions and feedback carb and it was sold new in here in Vancouver, Washington. My '83 4X4 wagon has only an EGR and A.I.S. My '83 2WD Hatch was the same. I'd ask Richierich and his Dad.. They'll know - What all should i replace/reseal with the engine out?
