  1. Yea-thats what i'm doin' with the EJ22 engine--weld up the injector ports & cut out the center of the manifold--weld in a rectangular "box"(block of 6061 T6 cut in half-milled out inside) & use a dual set of 40mm Dellortos--it turns out that the EJ22 has a slot in the passenger cam for a "dizy"--So the engine will be almost electronic-less other than basic spark control--just the way I want it--
  2. Yea-I'm going to re-use the carb for the dual set-up, but the intake will be available when the new motor goes in--- As for the dual 32/36 set idea--yes, you can jet the carbs down far enough--my problem is that you still have to pull it all thru a single port going into the head--so you are limited as to now much gain you will get--got to admit, it would look really cool----run one carb above each head with a balance tube between--I bet it would sound interesting:brow:
  3. Well--Thats close--Have a single 40mm DHLA Dellorto on the EA81--when I build up the EJ22, I'm cutting the spider manifold apart & running two 40MM carbs:)-- And as for the dual 32/36 DGV's--Too much carb for a 1800 without really working the engine up--the big problem is the single inlet per head--not very good for HP development--that's why I'm going with the EJ engine--I can make the intake ports at least twice the size as the EA81--should be able to pull a non-turbo'd 140/160HP out---
  4. Bondo puts a patch on the outside of a repair--if you bondo over rust--you will only get more rust----find a guy who is good with welding, remove the "cancer" & get some new/old bodyparts. As for low--A lot of us LIKE low--My car has 5 1/2 inch ground clearance--There are two "groups" (well, maybe three--)--some of us go to great length to lower our cars--some of us go to great lengths to raise our cars & the rest of us like them just the way they are---So welcome--we are all Subie crazy here---
  5. Well--yes its a Spitfire----Kind'a. Its a long term project--'67 Spit that has been widened 5" front & 9" rear with the wells tubbed inboard to allow "real" tires--powered by a 3.5L Rover V8 with a Getrag 5 speed behind--the axles you saw are Miata/RX7 so the car will have a better rear suspension--teamed up with a Gen II RX7 limited slip center pod---Kind'a looks like a baby Cobra when its all together----side-lined due to $$$$ (will need a cubic yard of $ to finish---) So, the Subie came into being---I WANTED a car that I could run on the track & play with on the street---So if anyone knows somebody with a spare $6000 or so (engine has over $5000 invested in it)-----if anyone's interested--- (& if this won't prove I'm a car nut--I don't know what will---)
  6. Thank you everyone!!---I was kind'a suprised to see this older post pop up again--You can look at more current pics in the photo gallery or follow some of my current posts---The flairs will most likely be done this month or early next & the project for this winter is a EJ22 (so I stay in the class I'm in)---So, stay tuned---
  7. Yea-the rims are 4 x130mm from VW superbeatle--Empie 8 spoke--You can get them online from CB performance--- Dean
  8. Will the adapter fit a EJ22 engine?? Putting one in T-Rex for next season--have a Jaguar XJ-6 oil cooler (similar to the Volvo unit, except with SAE fine thread fittings) & was looking for the sandwich---- Try driftin' in a Subie-----
  9. Well--I've owned many different Subie's-- Best econ car--'91 Justy--Wife & I ran it for over 112,000 miles before a *#$%@# Chev Tajunk broad on her cel rammed the wife in the rear at 30+ mph--Diamond-shaped the Subie bad--still, all the doors worked & the car kind'a drove---- Best basher---toss-up between a '84 Gl wagon & a '85 GL hatch---I couldn't kill either one (and I tried!!!) both are out of my life--still driving for other owners--- '89 GL wagon--bought it for the wife with 150,000 & a overheated engine for 250.00---put a wrecking yard engine in & now the wife has over 250,000 on it-- The Subie that just keeps on goin'---- And now the '82 GLF--I've made it a one-of-a-kind car & am doin' more all the time to it--the best $350.00 i've ever spent for a car that ended up like it has---Currently has less than $2500 invested in a Autocross car that kills newer & more expensive machinery--T-Rex-WRX has spun some minds around as to what a 'cross car needs to be--- Well- that's my two cents worth---
  10. Great--give me a call at home (826-2093)--Sat morning I will be putting Lexan in the rear quarter-windows (at the shop)--plan to be back home about 2 or so--If you're in town, drop by the shop or call me later in the day or all day Sunday--- Dean
  11. I use 20w-50 Castrol in T-Rex--no pressure problems & the engine holds together under racing use---
  12. Adam--need to talk sometime--T-Rex's hood could be 'cast anytime & I'm going to design the flairs in the next month or so--In any case, we need to talk--- Dean
  13. Well--you get the idea--small, light hi-output car---and i'm 100lb or so lighter by not having the AWD----I've got enough traction--just need more HP--- Yea-I remember your E--Found a guy in Italy that can send jets & other parts for real cheap--I'll send you the E if you want---
  14. I'm building the car to class specs, so no turbo (would move me up to the Mustangs & other V-8 cars)--same with the WRX drivetrain--the class allows up to 2.5L (read 2499cc), non-turbo & car must look similar to the stock car. So no major changes to drivetrain or body. The class is very tight, lots of 510's, a very light & hot ex-roadrace Ford Festiva and other good competive cars--better than a class of one---The carbs & basic electronics because I work with the K.I.S.S. system--the simpler it is, the less that can go wrong at the track---I know it won't be a techo marvel--but the idea behind the first WRX's was a light, powerfull, fast small car----So a real old WRX would fit the GLF--just new enough the use some tech, but old enough to not need it----
  15. BTW---you can go to http://performancebydesign.netfirms.com/subaru.html and see the older pics of the car--flair mocks are on it & some of the other stuff i've done----
  16. I'd like nothing better--The wife & I will be heading up tp Idaho in the '89 GL wagon--T-Rex will be in the garage at home--- My next race is the 28/29th--I'm in for season standings if I keep the car running as well as it has been--So, it looks like next year for me---but, on the bright side, T-Rex will be EJ22 by then & ready to take on the STi's!!!!
  17. Wellll---My friend Brian was down the last event with his 300hp STi & I was 6sec behind him-----but serious--I've got the flairs mocked up & the front & rear caps will be fairly easy--you can see where the rear venting will be & I'm going to do a standard front air dam with air intakes to the front brakes. Color will be a basic Artic White with a 12" bronze stripe from the bottom center of the "dam back up & over to the bottom of the air splitter center in the rear. I know its not a custom pearl or metallic or pimped color---but it's a race car & that will make it easy to repair if ( and I hope not) when it gets bent---
  18. I'd love to go to WCSS---but, my niece is having a wedding in Idaho Aug 22 & the next autocross is the next weekend (28/29th)---family before fun--you know. I'd invite you out to the autocross--lots of fun machinery going as fast as possible---- I will put it into my calandar for next year--should have the car much better along by then-- As to the VW mod--I welded up the stud holes in the front hubs & centered them in a lathe--had to reduce the centering lugs down to 100mm & set a scribe mark at 130mm--Centered all four new stud holes & drilled them. The rear drums were much easier--just offset the new holes 45deg from the old ones--scribed & drilled--used a endmill & straightened a area around the new stud holes--then installed all the new studs with blue Locktight (used late 70's chev 1/2 RH studs to make the lugnuts easy). The car is a 2WD 5 speed--Weight as raced without me is 1970LB--Engine is in the 100/105 HP range--40mm side-draft Dellorto on custom manifold (see the old FRANKINTAKE post)--dual 2" pipes back to a dual in/dual out Dynomax muffler with a "H" pipe at the diff & two 12" glaspacks staggered after to balance the tone--no power below 2000rpm--will rev real free up to 6500rpm---will hit 56mph at redline in second---
  19. THANKS!! Next major mod (this winter) is a EJ-22 engine & trans--looking for 140/160HP--The ol' EA-81 finally got tires that it can't break loose---and 2.2L will put me at the top of the class next year:brow: Later---
  20. OK-I've been real busy lately & haven't posted much of anything---Work-Ranch & Racing have taken 98% of the time I have---Still--T-Rex has been having a GREAT Autocross season--All Seconds & Thirds--still can't seem to pull that first place down :-\ but I'll keep doin' the mods & try harder-- Last mods- 1. Rear seat area is now plated with .032 6061 T6 aluminum--really stiffened the back of the car up. 2. Rear Sway bar from a early 90's Acura Intergra--I'll post pics if anyone is interested-worked real well in the back--was a easy mod--REALLY helped. 3. Falken Azisus Rs 205/50/15 tires on 4 x 130 0 offset rims--VW superbeatle rims--widened the track 2"-- also made the car look kind'a like the old Hot Wheels cars---have 6" ground clear with them--- I am still going to do the flairs & front/rear caps--just doing the things to lower the track times first-- Last event I was 4 sec faster that the Mini Coopers & BEAT a '02 WRX by 2 sec!! Not bad for a 22 yr old Gen 2 car!!!
  21. Yes--The EJ series engines are computer-controlled & dist-less--The point is that I'm going to modify the engine in several ways & this generally goes outside the computer pre-set fuel/ignition curves--I was pleased to see a cross-slot in the right (pass side) cam--this allows a old type electronic dist with mechanical advance--the cover boss can be machined to accept several units I can think of---Also, I want the simple-fix-it-at-the-track of carbs & basic ignition--if you have a computer problem, you are side-lined til you can get to the systems to help check it out--not so with the K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid) system--re-jetting & basic electronics can be done in the pits very quickly. By the way--I just finished two days of Autocross with the car--We had long track times--My best was a low 1min 42sec & some change--for a "heads up"-- a friend from Portland was down with his '02 WRX & his best was a 1min 46sec & change--so my "old school" '82 GLF cleaned up a "new" WRX--He was a good sport, but-------
  22. Hi John--I work at a shop in Medford--have all the equiptment to do the mod--would be interested in photos/tips for the mod. Any problem areas? Also--I have identified a dist type to mount in the rear of the cam boss on the pass bank--I will be removing the F.I. & redesigning the intake for a sidedraft Dellorto 45--want to make it simple--no electronics other than the dist--I'm a old-school carb man---
  23. Well-I make bushings for people--if you are set-up to cut UHMW I can send you the specs--or I can make you a car set for $60--I need to ship out another set to a guy in the Bay Area--let me know-- britnutdl@macdialup.com
  24. So--I have to bow to the horsepower gods--the EA81 motor can't work the new tires well enough (see prior post) & I'm thinking of a Legacy 2.2 & two/wheel/drive 5-speed. I've got the motor & no, I can't use anything bigger without moving into another class--I thought about a EJ25 & that would move me up against the 5.0 Mustangs &---- So--has anyone done it or seen it done? This looks like the winter project, so time will be on my side? All weigh in here or contact me at britnutdl@macdialup.com Later!!!!
