in an interference the valves are positioned so if they are all the way down and the piston is all the way up they will colide. So if the timing belt breaks the valves and the pistons hit each other...its bad....The advantages? i'm not really sure i suppose the engine can be smaller, or maybe a longer stroke but someone else may be able to go more indepth there....

My 89 GL has color matching bumpers, i think the DL's had the black ones and the GL and GL-10's have the matched ones. I've never seen the turn signals flush with the bumper like that white one in the US. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=837&sort=1&cat=500&page=1

I've never flushed the engine befire switching to synthetic, that little bit of dyno in there won't hurt anything. If it really bothers you just make your first change a bit sooner.

looks like you are at Mason there are some good shops in the area that won't charge you $220 in labor a side...maybe that much for the whole thing. I take my subarus to KC's auto which is in the Citgo station on Burke Road in burke...good bunch of guys in there, they aren't subaru specialists but they know them well enough. I would offer up my driveway but i'm not going to be intown for atleast a week....

Bad Clutch
Smpol19 replied to saranham's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
Well it wouldn't be beyond a Subaru dealer to try to rip off someone they thought that they could....one in the DC area just tried to charge my mom $500 for a brake job on her 02 Outback with 25k on it. I went in and talked to the advisor and the tech and they eventually told me they were "looking at the wrong car on the computer." That being said i have an 01 Outback Sport with 83k on the original clutch so I would ask a lot of questions before you let them charge you for that... -
I also wouldn't do it if i didn't have the time or money to do more repairs, you never know what could go wrong, and i think its safe to say that this car will probably have some more problems then a car that wasn't in a bad wreck. I'd also be sure you plan on keeping this car forever, it won't be easy to sell it and it will be worth very little. That being said keep in mind that you are saving over $10,000 it sounds like so even if you have to spend $2000 on repairs over the next year because it was poorley repaired you are still coming out ahead.

Anyone found a source for the dashboard illumation lights, spacificly the rear defrost button on my Impreza. Its a little light mounted in a peice of rubber that slides off. The dealer can only replace the whole switch, the switch says Nissan on it so i tried them and they didn't have it. Also checked 2 electronics stores...any place online???? its really not a big deal it just looks better with all the lights working.

How much do these things cost??? I'm trying to find a good place to mount my new sirius radio in my 01 impreza and this looks intersting. It seems to be a poorley set up website and I can't find anything about pricing. also if anyone has some good ideas about mounting in an 01 impreza, i'm thinking vent mount right now but not sure how well that will work out.

When I get NGK plugs they are usualy a little less then $10 for a set of 4. I'm i getting the wrong ones, I usualy change them atleast every 30k mostly just cause it gives me a good reason to go play with the car for an hour. But is there some advantage in terms of gas millage or emmisions or anythign with the more expensive ones.

If its the same basic set up start by removing the power window switches (be very carfule and start from the back there is a clip on the back that breaks if you aren't carfule and looks like crap once its broken) then just use a large flat head screwdriver and start prying it back from the bottom. Once you have all the clips undone lift straight up and it should come out if i remember all that right.

I feel like a lot of the first models of subarus seem ugly at forst and fit their way in. I remember when the 02 WRX came out and the washington post auto writer loved the car but riped apart the way it looked...the SVX...umm....not exactly pretty...when the out back first came out in almost 10 years ago there wasn't much like it and I'm just it got funny looks. I've always said subarus are ugly in a good way. Now i'm not exactly sure i still think this is ugly in a GOOD way but oh well. What upsets me more and more about Subaru is I feel they used to be a poor mans volvo but funner with 4wd, they used to be affordable 4wd cars. It seems like with the 05 outback they were compeating with volvo and almost as expensive. I'd take an 04 outback over an 05 anyday, i like the rugged look much better then the "pretty look" which seems like it where they are headed. I also am not a fan of all the standard features on the B9 if you got rid of standard power everything they could probably sell it in the mid $20,000 range. oh well I'm done with my rant.....for now....

They should be able to order it usualy takes a week or so to come in and usualy runs me about $14 for the little bottel with the brush

I had this problem with an Impreza swaped switches from another Subaru and still had the problem finaly narrowed it down to the passanger side front door. began looking around and found that the wire that ran to the plunger switch(is there a better name for this?) had rubbed againse the metal body of the car and grounded out which is the way the lights for the car work.

I'm definitly not an expert with the SVX spacificily, but with most Subarus with regular maintaince the engines often make it well above 200k miles. The trans may be getting near the end of its life but then again it could make it to 300k too(though i belive you mentioned a new touque conv. so their may have been a trans rebuild in there too especialy for $950. If you look at peoples sigs on the board you'll see pleanty of people with over 200k on their cars. But you also have to keep in mind that at a milage like that large and expensive repairs have to be expected even on the most reliable of cars. Logicaly if you are low on cash you can find a lower milage subaru for the same pride and it will be cheaper to maintain but if you love this car who cares about logic, just keep a few houndrad dollars around for when things go wrong and just keep in mind what a good deal you got on the car if you do have to put some money into it.
