  1. Latest update: EJ22 engine pulled and chilling in the brats engine bay dangling from the hoist. Started playing with wires, got frustrated again and stopped. Hopefully getting the crossmember and steering rack tomorrow. Bad news is I was told the GL at the junkyard was moved into a back corner and is now underneath another car so that should make for some interesting times at the junkyard. Here are a few pics of the engine pulled. Engine pulled. Empty (sorta) legacy engine bay. Trans will be pulled sometime next week after work.
  2. I have actually been meaning to drop by there to get a part for my Impreza. I blew out a trunk lid shock and autozone and the sort don't carry the right size. Been a bit too busy with the brats operation.

  3. I have only found 2 brat's for sale in Utah on KSL. And they aren't in the best shape. Check around in the classifieds on craigslist, and the classifieds on here as well.

  4. My buddy's father in law swapped in a 300k+ engine to a family members car once and its still kicking along. Long live indeed!
  5. Started to pull apart some of the legacy today. Took a decent amount of time because I don't have torx bits to get the steering wheel off. finally found two bolts that dropped the entire assembly down low enough to pull the dash out and leave me with wiring harness with plenty of fat to be trimmed. Here is the current shot of how my donor car looks. On an AWESOME note, I have found about $9 in spare change when I pulled out the center console. Already recouping some costs!
  6. I don't know what jackman wheels are... I just wish mine didn;t have a dent on it from some PO hitting a curb. Tomorrow I pull the front crossmember and finish the stereo wires (donor car came with a pioneer cd player so might as well upgrade that also) Tuesday hopefully cleaning/pulling the EJ22 and getting it all prepped for installation. It will have to sit until at least a week because im waiting till the Salt Lake City junkyard has half off day to go get my 5sp d/r. Might settle in on some wiring in the meantime.
  7. Yeah I live in Orem for now. I'm moving in January for schooling to Ogden.

  8. New to the forums and I figured I should post my own process of doing the EJ22 swap. There are many threads of peoples swaps and each one contains much information about things the person went through and all of them help people like me with little automotive know how. So first, Thank You to everyone who has posted information about these swaps! The car. The engine was running pretty good but it would not pass emissions. Possibly low compression, possibly just a vacuum line. Instead of chasing things around I got the wife's permission to start my swap. The swap stuff started about 2 days ago as I got the engine and trans pulled ready for selling, (4x4 Welder already is getting the trans). *after power washing the engine bay. I picked up a car for the donor yesterday for $180. Rusted, 1992 Legacy, 202k miles, manual 5sp, AWD. Also found a front cross member with a power steering rack for $20 at a junkyard I'm going to pick up after my vacation. Also getting a 5sp, d/r for the swap as well. More pictures and information to be coming as I get into this.
  9. Inspiring, truly inspiring. Makes it look possibly for joe shmoe to accomplish... I am tossing around the ideas of rebuilding my EA81 or being all trendy and going with the EJ22 like most people. Thanks for the write up.
  10. Nice to see other subaru fans from Orem.

  11. Little late to the post but I'm in orem. And I have seen that lifted yellow DL. It is what made me want to get a brat since I was younger. However lately I haven't seen it parked outside its usual house (I drive around orem a lot with my job).
  12. Hearing you talk about all this wiring stuff is getting me slightly nervous for my swap. However it also makes me smile because I know I can come back here and read your posts when I run into electrical problems and maybe find my answers within your findings.
  13. Sorry, my stickers are original *as far as I know*. I was reading the post and someone said they wanted more brat pics. And since I too am a new brat owner I threw my pic up for the viewing pleasure of those out there. Doug_ATX's brat doesn't look like it had the stickers.
  14. Here is my brat helping shuttle some bikes up the mountain. Only owned her few a few weeks and am making the plans for the EJ22 swap... *If I can find a proper donor...*
  15. 4x4 Welder, Thank you soooo much! All those links will greatly help me as this will be my first ever engine swap I will start a personal thread somewhere to show how it goes.
  16. I'm in Utah and I think its more than a carburetor problem. I might give it one more try but I think I might just hold out to get a 2.2 in there. For-go the whole carburetor in general. Also the air filter was the first thing I changed when I bought the car. Followed by an axle, ball joint, fuel filters, plugs, distributor cap/rotor, windshield, pcv valve and hose, and somewhat rebuilding (heavy cleaning) of the carburetor.
  17. I myself and currently looking into doing an ej22 swap into my '85 brat. Adding also a 5/sd D/r to replace the 4 sp. MY ea81 isn't being nice so its time to upgrade. I read once a full write up of the swap (25 page pdf) and now I can't find it regardless of searching. If anyone can point me towards it I would be extremely grateful.
  18. Just got back from the re-test. Idle Test (I got the idle to about 900) HC - 1989ppm!!!!! Thats 1769ppm over the limit.... The benefit of this test was the finally did my safety test so I'm clear in that area. I might "sell" the car to my wife and have her register it under my sisters address in iron county where they don't have emissions Even though I know that there is still a problem that needs to be fixed so I won't be at ease, at least I will have license plates...
  19. From my little knowledge I have gained in reading countless posts, and surfing the web endlessly after work looking for assorted parts there aren't much in the aftermarket for brat exhausts. A few other brat owners around here are big on junkyards, salvaging anything off gl's since they will most of the time fit our brats. Hope you find something suitable.
  20. Well then... Not exaclty what I wanted to hear :-\ Tomorrow is my last day to get a free test done (since you get 2 free retests). After getting everything back together today it was running a bit smoother and idling at about 1000 or so. If it still fails then I'm gonna go ahead and either replace every single vacuum line and start on the compression tests.... or just buy a 2.2 engine and begin my swap. Thanks for the info.
  21. I am having the same problem with my "new" brat. My readings were... High Speed Test HC-84 CO-.15 Idle Test HC-1203 CO-.2 HC can't be more than 220 and im clearly pretty high over that. I have replaced plugs right before the test. Since the test I have rebuilt the carb (the brat still runs the same though) replaced pcv valve and hose, as well as distributor cap and rotor. I have one more free test and I'm still scared I will fail. Any thoughts ? I just might go buy some alcohol to put in with the gas to just get past the emissions. Also my brat doesn't like to idle at its recommended 700 rpm. It struggles to get under 1200 which its required to be under for the idle test. Any help is appreciated.
