'85 Brat EJ22 swap (Pics included)
Alright i understand where all this lengthen 4wd stick nonsense was coming from now. I am currently figuring out how to make it work. Who is this jerry and where can I see his kit? I found an ea81 power steering rack and pulled it this morning. The car it came from was under another car, surrounded by other cars with cars on top of them as well as wasp nests in those upper cars. It was an adventure for sure. Now the only thing I really "need" is my driveline shortened 1" or find a drivline that is the right length. I found one that is 56.5" long, anybody know if that will still work? What is the possibility of just having it mostly inside the trans? Or making a little adapter plate that bolts between the driveshaft and the rear diff to make it the right length? Any input would be GREAT!!

Thats a pretty clever, and MUCH simpler way to mount it. However I also didn't have the old 4sp mounts, they had ripped in half and I'm pretty sure they left with the trans when 4x4 welder picked it up. What I did was for sure a lot more complicated but it was a learning experience and everything is bolted up. I haven't had to lengthen anything and its all bolted together. Were you talking about if I used the original brat 4wd lever instead of the 5sp one?

Progress of My Purchase
I didn't need the motor, just the flywheel. And maybe the driveshaft.... didn't have time to go take measurements today. And yes, Mcgyver tricks do work.

Sweet ride! I am assuming you were at state street if you got stung by wasps. It seems like the wasps all built their homes in the subarus You should have gotten ahold of me for that axle, I'm freaking pro at those stupid things now. I usually don't have to break stuff anymore

I could. But the tie rods are also longer and the EA81 and EA82 rods are not interchangeable. I already gave that a go and now have a torn down EA82 cross member sitting in the garage. There is a EA81 with power steering at the junkyard!! Only problem... its under another car, AND surrounded on 3 sides by cars with cars ontop of them, and a steep hill on the other side. So who knows whats going to happen. Also, the lift won't come till later. Funds have pushed me to just get this thing working for now and then get a lift later. Got my EA82 5sp trans cross member altered enough to fit. Had to do some welding which was festive mainly because I have never welded before. Turned out all good which made me happy because now my engine and trans are all bolted up and being held in the car without a hoist!! Next step is to get suspension bolted back together and then wiring. Pictures of my custom trans cross to come later.

No I was told it had to be an EA82 flywheel I can't remember the exact reasoning behind it but I did what I was told. Flywheel was $10 at the junkyard so it wasn't too bad. Todays project consisted of trying to make a transmission X member that fits in where the old one did as well as fit the trans mounts since the 5pd d/r mounts are like this \ / (bolts from an angle) while the old trans was like this _ _ ( if that doesn't make sense pictures will come tomorrow) A little welding and I will have it strong enough as well as thin enough to mount up. Then add the driveshaft with carriage bearing mounting and then its mostly down to wiring!!

Also forgot to mention my flywheel. About $70 to get it re-drilled and re-surfaced. The guy at DD machining did a great job. Here are a few pics. Flywheel put in, few fingerprints but it was clean before putting the clutch in. Here is my lack of impact gun way to torque the bolts. Dutch oven lid lifter held between PP bolts to hold the flywheel in place as i use my Harbor Freight breaker bar to get things tight.

WAHOO!!!! Things are starting to move forward! Got my adapter plate in after a few slight adjustments. One hole was slightly off and needed to be ground a little bigger. Then I had to drill out the threads on the top of the engine block to make my plate work. My adapter plate doesn't use the split pins, it is instead threaded so that I put a bolt in from each side. Worked really well and went very smooth even by myself. Engine bolted together ready to drop it in. Good shot of the adapter plate and the bolts threaded into it. Kinda had to put it in crooked to get it all to fit. It is in!!!! (mostly)

2 Issues with my new loyale
If you need a new sending unit I just pulled one out of the loyale on top of the VW bus at state street wrecking. There was at least two loyales there for sure that you can get a new gauge from as well.

thats is the current plan. Just need the funds.

Another car i might buy.-XT-6
Geneva and like 350 S? That is kurts. Hope the loyale works out for you. I picked up my Legacy for $180 because of rust and a bad battery. Only a few more parts and the EJ22 will be in my brat!

Oh, and if your wondering where to get a 5 sp d/r. There is a gl at kurts that already has the engine out (had to use a seatbelt to pull the thing because I forgot a chain) and the trans cross member out of the way. Should only take a few minutes to pull that sucker.

Nope, that is zstalker. I work for someplace almost as exciting thought! ok so no I don't. If you end up with an EA82 wagon I know there are plenty of parts for those at our local junkyards. Kurts, and state street being our best options. So get cracking so I can see some more old subarus around the valley!

On board air?
Yeah my wife doesn't like it when I got to HF because I see all sorts of stuff I "need". My brat is enough of a project for me right now. But on-board air would be really fun and useful for me. Yeah we all could just use the electric stuff, but honestly, where is the fun in doing something the easy way

On board air?
From what I have read you have to have the oiler setup always since the AC compressor uses the refrigerant to keep it oiled. I found a few write ups awhile back about how to turn any stock AC compressor into an air compressor, but it wasn't top of my list so I lost track of them. I knew I should have bookmarked those...

I understand your want for finding a good car for under $1k. And also, praise to the fun finds that KSL classifieds has to offer! Let me know what you end up getting and I will be more than happy to help fix things up and rummage junkyards with you. Be even more willing once my brat is finished... *insert hopeful sigh here*

junkyard prices for D/R 5 speed ...
On half off wednesdays I paid $135 for mine. The normal price for a trans is $90, then a $30 core. However I got charged for a transfer case, and the core for that. Wasn't particularly happy about it because I drove up to this junk yard specifically for half off wednesdays, and ended up paying the same price the junkyard thats 5 blocks away... I was arguing with the checkout guy for awhile asking him to show me where the transfer case he was charging me for was it and he just kept saying that because it was 4wd he had to charge me for a t-case also.

4WD switch ... easy repair?
Is this the switch you are making reference to? If it is then I am pretty sure I don't need this one since I have a 5sp D/R waiting to go in and I do believe that the switch that triggers 4 hi/low is on the trans.

He said he could get my legacy driveshaft shortened to fit the brat. It is about an inch top short. Cost would be about $85 so im going to have to wait till the next paycheck.

AC to air will be one of the last things I do to the brat. First it needs to be put together, which I got a few more pieces towards the final product. Still trying to figure out the driveline issues because six states distributors wasn't really stoked to help make a driveline for a subaru. He said "no subaru is worth that much effort". Anywho, more to come on that later. New part goodies have been received. Adapter plate made from 1/2" steel. A friend of a friends father in law has a few of these he had made and might be willing to sell some... New XT6 pressure plate, pad, bearings etc. Built to last also! (duralast) Hopefully I will get my flywheel redrilled in the next few days. Probably drop it off at the machine shop monday and pick it up later that day. Still in debate of whether to drill it myself, and then have the machine shop resurface and balance it for me, or just have them to the whole dealio.

Mount an EA82 PS pump on your EA81 with my kit! Works with SPFI swaps too!!
If you are saying to use the EA81 tie rods on the EA82 rack, that was my first try but it doesn't work. The EA81 inner tie rods are female while the EA82 are male.

I have been playing with putting power steering into my 85 brat and it has been a PITA thus far. EA82 x members are about 2 inches wider which means that the control arms are also two inches farther out which means that your wheels are being screwed up camber wise. I have been making some alterations to me EA81 x member to fit the steering rack from the EA82 inside of it. My only problem now is to get the tie rods shorter, (EA82 rods are 2 inches longer of course.) or to somehow attach the brats tie rods to the power steering rack. Main problem being that the brat tie rods are female ends and the EA82's are male. Talking with some machine shops about making a custom bolt that can be threaded into the brats tie rods so that it can be threaded into the power steering rack. Either that or i am going to cut the tie rod from the EA82 and get it re-threaded making it a shorter tie rod. Around here EA81 power steering racks and cross members are pretty much non existent and i don't have the money to buy one and have it shipped to me. I this works you can all expect a write up with pictures for those of us who like the pretty colors.

Engine Help
EJ22 is straight up fuel injection. You wouldn't be able to use the carb but like GD said, you get more power for the amount of your work. I myself am working on a EJ22 swap into my 85' brat to replace the EA81, lots of work but hopefully the payoff will be worth it

low range into an SG Forester?
You could always be like me and just be teaching yourself how to do it along the way. Makes for some frustrating times in the garage and lots of wrenches thrown at walls tho... I kind of lucked out and have a buddy with a subaru mechanic father-in-law and another guy who has done my swap in his Loyale. Now if only they had spare time to help. Good luck with whatever you decide and if you do start tearing into stuff, take lots of pictures. It helps with the reassembly for those of us with not much mechanic background.

I was thinking of putting in an air tank there for when I do the ac to air compressor mod later on.
